It was an objectively bad convention dominated by negative press.
Day 1 and 2: Press covered the plagiarism debacle
Day 3: Press covered the Cruz betrayal
Day 4: Press covered the terrifying Trump speech. Speech was not a disaster, but did not receive much praise either.

It was a bad convention, yet it seemed to further unify the party.

Nothing's objective in political perception, you act like republicans aren't going to immediately dismiss all that bad press as the biased left wing media being biased. To us Cruz rebelling against Trump looks like a disaster, to them it's the establishment crony trying to rain on brave outsider Trump's parade.

Republicans are going to remember their guy standing in front of an ecstatic audience, saying all the right buzzwords and using all the right dog whistles. You, rightly, are put off by all of those things, but, hard is it may be, try to empathize with the opposition for a moment.

Remember how we predicted Trump would split the Republican party and kill the GOP? Good times.

You give me a tiny sliver of hope that i won't be banned for openly supporting Trump like almost all of the others but then I wonder if you're just so over the top that you're just trolling. The name, avatar, quirky (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ ascii art combination makes me think you went so cartoonish that nobody takes it seriously so that's why....lol.

I've made like two political posts ever(? that i remember, it's been 6 years). Last one was about how i thought both candidates were poor options for us and how i was deciding between the two. The choice has been made and it's Trump. There's many reasons why and I'm willing to share if anyone curious? Before that i'd like to address the sentiment below:

I really don't think he's racist...ANYMORE. I did research before making my choice and every 'documented' racist fact about DJT is min 20 years ago with most 30-40 years ago...in the 70s! I firmly believe people can change. DJT was born into being filthy rich and privileged. Notice how many of these types of people are out of touch with reality when they're younger...live in a bubble and many times tend to only hang out with their own race (usually white).

People change and I think he did. Those documented facts are literally decades ago. Now i realize people are reading this and doing the SMH and screaming at their monitor saying what about calling all Mexicans rapists and murderers and wanting to deport 11 million illegal immigrants? What about the Muslim ban?

1] He said many of the Mexican illegal immigrants that come over are of that ilk. He didn't say all Mexicans are or all Mexican illegal immigrants are. Nearly every time i see this recited it's a blanket statement instead of what he really said.

2] What about deporting 11 million illegal immigrants? Why support that? I'm frankly ok with this...mmy parents are from Italy, we're Sicilian, as italian as it gets and they came over here and emigrated legally. They've hard working Italian Americans for most of their lives that love the country. They've voted republican ever since while I've voted Gore ->Obama ->Obama and now ->Trump in November. I'm getting off track here...so why support the deportation of 11 million illegal immigrants? Because I would like the law to be upheld. Because I'm proud of the way my parents legally emigrated here, learned the language, learned and assimilated into American culture, and became incredible morally upstanding and tolerant Americans. I'm so proud of them. I don/t want the law to be ignored. I understand this mass deportation could have a horrible economic impact on the country but I haven't done research on this aspect of it yet. Willing to read an article or two if anyone has it handy?

3] What about the Muslim ban? Ok so this was a big one for me...it's so effing stupid and cartoonish that I couldn't believe he was being serious. The ban was the #1 reason I was holding back from supporting Trump. Not only is it NOT feasible logistically and accurately...(anyone can say they're not muslim. How does this make sense?) but it's also widespread racial profiling the likes the world hasn't seen in a long time.

So what changed? I didn't see a thread on it but a couple days ago Trump backtracked on the ban. He won't admit it's a backtrack because he's a stubborn jackass but he did. There's an invterview that plays on the cable news networks. Guess what? He also chose a VP in Mike Pence that publicly came out and said how ridiculous it was. I really think he wasn't serious about the ban the whole time...he kept trying to one up himself with the crazy attention grabbing headlines...this was during his snowballing period which began with the wall. Monkey throwing shit at the walls (in this case at the media) hoping to garner major headlines and getting support from the republicans who are racist and bigoted. We're seeing now it was all for those reasons and not legit. He backtracked and isn't going to have a ban and chose a VP who publicly condemned it. These past few days were a big turning point for me. I was legit undecided. I've typed enough for now and am hungry but will answer any questions.

I'm gonna be open with my support of Trump here from now on...and CIVIL, and try to be as reasoned as possible instead of drive by one liners. Hopefully the moderators can respect that and not give me a ring shattering F5 into the abyss. I dont post much these days so it's not like I'm gonna be in every thread but yeah. A lot of the things i've read here over the past few days calling all of us racists and bigots and xenophobes has made me extremely upset cussing at the screen...getting legit shoot IRL (I really shouldve trademarked "legit shook" btw), but I waited to make this post till I calmed down and I'll continue to be calm and civil from here on. *deep breath* lol

This is gonna be good.

You do realize his VP willingly and knowingly set forth the LGBT discrimination bill in Indiana, and if Trump wins and picks the next 2-3 Supreme Court Justices, you will see them trying to overturn Obamacare, Roe v. Wade, LGBT marriage, and uphold Citizens United... right?

Do you have any idea how badly that would damage the country?

I have multiple people at work say that they're voting for Trump and I work in IT, which is a mostly liberal crowd.

The world is doomed.

Such an incredibly dangerous and irresponsible attitude to have.

Fuck that.
I wouldn't treat my worst enemy the way Clinton backers shit on bernie supporters during the primary.
Being called sexist frat boys, racists, supporters of South American dictators and conspiracy nuts for even entertaining the idea that the DNC preferred Clinton to win.
Get in line you losers!

Wow this post is literally "it's worse to call people racists than to actually be one"

Nice job man

1] He said many of the Mexican illegal immigrants that come over are of that ilk. He didn't say all Mexicans are or all Mexican illegal immigrants are. Nearly every time i see this recited it's a blanket statement instead of what he really said.

Even saying many Mexican immigrants are murderers, rapists, etc. is wrong.

Well, consider you have millions of these immigrants working low-paying but still critical jobs. Now you've rounded them all up and kicked them out. Who's going to work those jobs now? Americans by and large don't want to work the jobs that immigrants have, and even if they did, they'd want higher wages and more benefits (or any benefits, for that matter) than those immigrants are currently getting. That's a huge financial burden on any business that employs illegal immigrants -- and that's assuming they can fill every one of those jobs, and do so immediately after the previous employees are deported, anyway.

3] What about the Muslim ban? Ok so this was a big one for me...it's so effing stupid and cartoonish that I couldn't believe he was being serious. Trump's backtrack is like when people try to hide LGBT discrimination under the guise of religious liberty. Profiling countries that have been compromised by terrorism is just another name for profiling against Muslim immigrants. Unless you believe a Trump administration will also be denying entry to non-Muslim immigrants from France, Germany, etc.?

And none of that changes that his original, plainly spoken position was decidedly anti-Muslim. Do you really believe in the span of six months Trump has had a true change of heart and no longer believes the worst about Muslims? Not just in regards to the ban, but all the shit he has said about them, like falsely claiming that thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attacks. He even said in that same interview that the reason he has shifted gears on the Muslim ban is people were upset about the word "Muslim" being included. It's not a change of policy or a change of heart, it's just a minor change of language.

If I have to choose only one thing of the many things I disagree with in your post, this would is it. I suppose those illegal Mexicans aren't morally abiding, but in fact deplorable people who are intolerable of American views (otherwise, why would they be here, am I right?) and refuse to learn English because they think the language sucks. They should be assimilating into the American culture. You know, the one largely comprised of immigrants and diverse cultures. The melting pot.

My parents are from Eastern Europe. I am of Serbian descent. They immigrated here and got their citizenship. But I'd be damned if I looked down on people who didn't wait to migrate here and became citizens because of circumstances that put their lives in jeopardy or at a standard of living that even in your worst days you've probably never experienced.

Should the many Serbian families I know who migrated here and got their citizenship but never learned English and still stick to their roots be deported as well? Man, ______ _____ ____ __ __ _ _______________. That's what I have to say.

Trump doesn't have to be overtly racist to do a lot of harm. Minorities have been mistreated at his conventions, they have been kicked out, attacked, etc. Trump's response to that isn't to condemn those actions, instead he eggs them on and offers to pay the legal fees for anyone who assaults them. An elected Trump would embolden the racists, racism in America would get worse.

I've heard this a bunch of times about Pence and am legit uninformed about it BUT...BUT...I am informed that Trump really doesn't give a hoot about who does what sexually. Who remembers his response to the transgender bathroom issue that was a hot topic (and still is but was really hot that one week)? He said he doesn't care who uses what bathroom. I specifically remember him saying this. What this tells me is that he's not genuinely against LGBT rights. DJT was a democrat for most of his life. He's not an anti-LGBT religious nutter like Cruz. He's not gonna try to repeal Roe v Wade or other crazy GOP talking points.
Such an incredibly dangerous and irresponsible attitude to have.
Do you believe it's wrong though? I agree it's a dangerous way to think...but it's my intuition and i've always had a pretty good intuition when it comes to seeing through peoples words, empathizing with them and understanding what they really mean and are trying to say. I'm a newly minted RN and i'm not shy to say it's one of my best qualities. I may not be very book smart but I'm good with connecting with people...communicating...listening to what they have to say, deciphering what they really mean and what their intentions are.

Oh God, as if every Hillary win wasn't somehow explained away by voter fraud, low information voters, and the will of the people being denied by very vocal Bernie supporters. There was enough vitriol from both sides that no matter who won the other side would want troll revenge.

It wasn't a secret that the DNC would want an establishment candidate to win. What was absurd was all the excuses that were made when it became clear that the majority of the people wanted Hillary as well.

You pick and choose what to believe Trump will do. You believe he's genuine about the LGBT rights, but not about the Muslim ban. You put blindfolds on when it's convenient.

The "but my grandparents/ancestor came here legally" is the biggest bullshit reason ever people give to support mass deportation. When your ancestors came here they just hopped on a fucking boat and came here! Nothing more. They talk like their ancestors did some exectionally shit to come here.

If a business is only profitable with the help of illegal labor, they're not really a business are they?

That's why a country is not run like a company or business. If a company shows a pornographic debt for decades and deficits feeding into it since 2001 that company would go bankrupt and close.

Yea. My parents simply got on a plane, got to America and found porter jobs.

There is nothing healthy about humoring the viewpoints of someone who would willingly support Trump. The argument that both sides are equally valid carries absolutely no weight with this election.

Yes

I...really can't tell if you're serious here or not. At least you acknowledge that it's a very dangerous attitude to have.

It's not wise to use these past examples as some sort of soothing ointment. This is an unprecedented election campaign. He has rewritten the book. He has defied hundreds of election campaign tropes.

Plus, people WANTED to vote for Obama. He was fresh. He was inspiring. He was change. By contrast, very few people are invigorated by Hillary Clinton. Millions of people are voting Hillary because she's the lesser of two evils. Not because she inspires them.

Considering the recent controversy around the DNC email leaks and Schultz stepping down as a result (furthering many American's beliefs that Hillary and the Democrat establishment are corrupt) combined with the fact that RNC just all said "fuck it" and rallied behind Trump - I'm not surprised at all Trump polled ahead of her.

Just like I won't be surprised if Hillary is polling ahead of him after the DNC.

He's stated over and over the type of Supreme Court justices he'd nominate....

I don't think this poll in particular is anything to freak out about. But if this lead holds after the DNC and into August/September, then you can start to worry.

i feel like it's one national poll that is literally still in fucking july

hahaha this right here.

People are dooming and glooming already?

Im not saying he cant win, what I am saying is that he most probably wont. I dont care what july pools say.

This may change as we get closer to november.

Since I assume that the Idiocracy jokes have already been made, let's just stay calm: convention bump, wait for the DNC, polls get more accurate and relevant the closer we get to the election etc

Although Americans running scared of a Trump win generally isn't a bad thing because it could increase voter turnout in November. No complacency.

I have a horrible feeling that Trump will win. I'm Irish but I have Americans friends who are democrats who won't vote for Clinton under any circumstances. They'd rather abstain.
