I am pretty happy that they seem to have ditched the dual-screen concept. Probably my personal favorite aspect about this news.

I think this could be exactly what I'm looking for.

Something more powerful than the 3DS. - As much as I love the 3DS, I always wished it had Vita quality graphics ability. This should hopefully be a step up from that.

Taking my console games on the go - Having wife/kids/work/life, it's hard to play console games, even if they offer Off TV/Remote Play. Sleep modes have alleviated that, but with the 3DS/Vita, it's so easy to just start and stop on a whim. If the NX follows this, it will have the best of both worlds and can be stopped/started in either big tv or handheld mode.

I'm now excited! I really hope they get this right and have a good set of launch games. I fear though that this could go down the Vita route. I loved that system, but it just did not take off. I fear that people will feel the same about the NX.
 
Interesting idea and I'll wait to hear more but this sounds like the least exciting route Nintendo could have gone for myself personally. I don't foresee myself buying another dedicated handheld, even a dedicated hybrid system one like this, in the foreseeable future. Good luck to them though, maybe they can leverage Pokemon Go and other mobile games with a device like this.

Excellent point. That and the SF0 anime are both suspect!
 
No one would buy a Nintendo home console on the Neo/Scorpio's level, because the people who would be interested in it would just buy a Neo/Scorpio.

I swear Nintendo is like the most out of touch company in history, how hard can it be to produce a system that is plenty powerful (ensure 3rd party ports) plus having Nintendo priceless IPs. its not that hard nor that expensive BUT no...lets seek an already shrinking market (handhelds) and get some of that PHONE marketshare, guess what.... people buy smartphones to make calls first, browse internet second ...and maybe game on it third. NX is not a phone, won't sell like a phone and won't sell to hardcore either.

And in a few years we will have a post mortem on why NX failed, and we will hear that someone at Nintendo said that NX should sell a billion units like iphone 7 or whatever.

Didn't they do that with the gamecube?

I feel like chasing the PS4 and XB1 is a surefire way to find irrelevance.

I've already got two consoles that are pretty much the same. I definitely wouldn't buy a third.

Are you surprised? Despite America being their biggest market, they still typically design for Japan and hope they sell well in the West. Works out sometimes. Doesn't others. I was hoping they would change after all the globalization they seem to be doing now, but it's not like the new CEO had much time to make an imprint on the NX.

Maybe it won't be a touchscreen. And when it's on the dock the screen is disabled. (or mirrors what's on the tv)
 
Hoping the controllers still have some bit of motion control, while having enough buttons for traditional control schemes as well.

Really interesting concept and I hope Nintendo pulls it off.
 
So Zelda WiiU might have better visuals? Now, that's a shocker.

Overall it may be a good thing for them as it doesn't splinter the user base, combines their development and ensures larger game supply. Plus a lot of Japanese devs are familiar with similar mobile platforms.
 
All I need to see is if Zelda is upgraded on it and I'll be there, day 1! Seeing an upgraded Zelda would probably quell many doubts about this thing, so I hope they go wild with the game during its unveiling.

Maybe because if the console is docked and you're using the detachable controllers you can't use the touch screen.

3DS is over 60 million sold, and that still retails for what $180. The Wii U bombed hard and caused them to branch out revenue streams with Amiibo etc. Which was long overdue.

If they can sell 40-60 million of these, they'll make huge profits. Look at the attach rates for the top Wii U and 3DS games. Now they could achieve all those on all their game as since the base isn't split and games aren't being "wasted" if one platform fails, or wasted in the West if on portable or the East if on console etc. Plus, as others noted, it's probably the end of $40 games (not counting budget titles) since there's no portable only version. So now all their games can sell at $60 and up revenue.

Of course it's a risk as if the platform fails they're done. But they have to know this is pretty much a last gasp to see if they can remain relevant as a hardware platform at all to tide things over until all gaming is cloud based and dedicated hardware (aside from controllers and other peripherals) is a thing of the past.

I'll be there day one. I do find it strange that they are only going to try selling one piece of hardware moving forward, unless there is some type of add-ons that will boost power when connected to the TV.
 
I am actually very happy about this because I could play my games on the go. I can play Zelda Breath of the Wild on the go now. I wonder if the NX games will cost more because they use cartridges. I remember when Chrono Trigger was released on SNES and it was $80.
 
if this is true i may buy. I always wanted vita with hdmi output and the possisbility to add controllers via BT.
It seems a nice evolution but not a revolution though.
Hopefully it is like an updated vita with actual support.

Think that's guaranteed not to happen at this point. Nintendo is clear about this being the next step and if it actually is a hybrid giving it the name of their previous console range makes no sense.
 
Think about how many games Nintendo has released this generation. Now imagine all that goodness on one device.

with detachable controller mechanics this thing is bound to be huge. i mean all the flops have to be in the middle part. I hope their idea of portable isn't wii u game pad sized....

I cannot imagine this thing to not look clunky as hell, but I would love to be proven wrong...
 
Any bets on the name? Nintendo GO?

Tokyo Game Show is in the middle of September by the way, so the reveal will hopefully happen then at the latest.
