Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

why why why

This is going to be such a shitty handheld.

I followed up asking if the mockup had an accurate button configuration or if it was just to demonstrate the detachable controller concept.

I think this would be really cool, but my concern is with the amount of buttons. Maybe if it's like two PSP Gos where the bottom slides out? That's a lot of moving parts though haha.

The rumor from Semi-Accurate was that because of this history and Nvidia being shut out of the console market in the latest generation, they were desperate to get a win and that they gave Nintendo the mother of all sweetheart deals (or Nintendo sensed blood and took them to the cleaners depending on your perspective).

There are 2 other factors here according to S/A. Apparently, the guy at AMD who got all the console contracts now works for Nvidia. So, the connection was there. Also, this appears to be a licensing deal. I'm expecting a custom part with lots of input from Nintendo. With AMD, they would be forced into the semicustom business of buying the chips straight from AMD, which goes against their previous way of working.

I tweeted at Tom Phillips who confirmed that it is two detachable controllers and not just two halves of one whole controller.

This is the weirdest part to me.

It'll probably be like the Wii remote and Nunchuck. Hold them separately to get the full, twin-stick experience, or give one to your friend and you can both play a simple multiplayer game with less buttons.

this sounds pretty bad

yeah, a device that functions as a whole controller on its side and a half controller when oriented vertically? There's no possible way Nintendo could ever make that work, it's crazytalk

540p also scales better to 1080p for On-TV mode.

Why does it need to scale perfectly? Why not just downsample 1080p content to whatever arbitrary resolution?

I don't want to advocate for Nintendo to remain five years behind every other device in this space, fuck that

So this Nvidia Tegra???

What are we talking about??

I do have an Apple TV 4th Gen, how will it compare graphically??
Quite, quite favorably in the X1 variant.
Unknown in the X2 variant.

Guys, though... all of Nitnendo's new first party games... on one fucking console!

Consider the lineup we'd have had in 2013 if all their teams were releasing on one machine: (Note - includes Nintendo funded / published games)

Pikmin 3
Fire Emblem Awakening
Wonderful 101
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Game & Wario
Zelda Wind Waker HD
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Super Mario 3D World
Pokemon X&Y
Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics
Lego City Undercover
NES Remix
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Dr. Luigi
Wii Sports Club
Mario Party Island Tour
Wii Fit U
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Wii Party U

Imagine a year like that - one ONE console! Holy shiiiiiiiiii....

Droughts? What droughts?
Yeah, a lot of the reactions are pretty crazy. So much knee-jerk disappointment about something that, on paper at least, could prove to be the ultimate platform for Nintendo software.

Just because it might not have Western AAA 3rd party support doesn't mean that it's not going to have 3rd party support. If you take the 3DS Japanese 3rd party support, combine it with the Western indies that the Vita was getting (probably a lot more now that you don't have to worry about getting your game to work on the Vita's weak hardware and have a better than Vita install base to sell to), and Nintendo full-focused attention (not divided between two platforms) and this looks primed to have the best software lineup of any Nintendo system since the SNES.

I don't get this question... If you want multiple portables you buy multiple portables, just like today with 3DS and Vita.

We don't know what is all in the box with the detachable controllers and docking station and shit.

Like I'll get the super mega wax your balls everything in a box bundle. Yet I don't need a bunch of dupe parts when I buy two more for the kids.

Does the NO BACKWARDS Compatibility in the OP have any weight?

Because if so, Nintendo done fucked up.

They'll just port or expand the biggest titles like SMM, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros. 4, and hopefully stuff like Super Mario 3D World, Zelda HDs, Bayonetta 1+2, etc.

The Wii U had a good library but not so many titles that a few ports couldn't fill the gaps on NX.

if it will have this patent in, upgrading the console power for "tv sessions", I'll be more than happy about this move.
otherwise: it is a faked "brexit" from the home segment.
I've said before I felt like the Neo and Scorpio felt too weird and out of place, like they were an answer to something. I think it's this.

Do not listen to this man Nintendo. The WiiU has a 480P screen and it looks very low rez compared to modern tablets etc...

Please make it 1080p.

As long as the screen is resistive and has a stylus I'll be happy. Capacitive is actually bad for gaming. And 540p IS the sweet spot for res. And cartridges! YES! Third parties will be able to do a lot with that!

If third parties are aboard, they will go all digital for the most part

I still think a hybrid (ie a portable that docks into a base station to be used on a TV) is a terrible idea, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Nintendo pitches this.

NX is such a weird device...the more information we get the more questions keep coming up. I mean no matter how the system ends up performing - at least for the unveiling all eyes will be on Nintendo. They better use that opportunity.

Just going from many responses in this thread expecting games to look like garbage mobile games from 5 years ago i think it will positively surprise many users.

Hardware a side i really hope they learned from the OS disaster called WiiU launch - NS OS better be fast as fuck also live streaming game content to Twitch, Youtube and Co. is expected at this point.

*slightly odd dual-controller set-up for portable multiplayer*

NINTENDO IS DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED

This is the weirdest part to me.

Yeah it doesn't make sense, unless each controller is a full gamepad and there's actually the possibility to attach two gamepads for multi but you need just one to play single player.

Please make it 1080p.

Wii U Gamepad is also over 6" though. 3DS XL top screen is 4.88" for reference running at 240p. 1080p is out of the question, the power draw would be massive, your battery life would barely be in the hours. Even 720p would likely be a hog.

Yeah, the other great thing about consolidating Nintendo's developer output on one console is it eliminates redundancies. Instead of the Mario Kart team making Mario Kart 9 and Mario Kart 10, they can just make Mario Kart 9, and then work on something else... like a new F-Zero, perhaps.

It doesn't fix gaming handhelds dying off due to smartphones nor does it fix third party developers having limited interest.
Sure it does. It reduces Nintendo's need to even think about third parties anymore. They could probably sustain the device on their own with Japanese and indie support, just like they did on 3DS.

Nintendo honestly does not need western AAA support to be successful.

I wonder how digital downloads are going to work. There's no way they're going to put 500GB+ of flash storage in the console, so is it going to have a hard drive? In the controller, stuffed in there with the battery and all the hardware? They could have you connect external HDDs by USB, of course, but then say goodbye to gaming on the go. SD expansion cards aren't going to take you far with full console-sized games.

I'd expect that large external storage connects to the dock. You'd have to rely on cartridges and/or SD cards for on-the-go play, so you won't necessarily be taking your entire DD library with you. Still, with 128 GB SD cards being relatively affordable, it's feasible to store around 5-10 AAA games and a bunch of smaller ones on a single card.

There's no way the final build is running an X1. They are actively cooling (read: overclocking) the dev kits. This almost mandates a beefier end result chip that is more efficient.

Seems 16nm (or X2-custom) is all but definite now and may well explain why this thing delayed into 2017 rather abruptly.

yep. Nintendo is basically on NVidia roadmap time, and we all know how that goes. (Things often get delayed or become part of the next-next gen offering).

This is the weirdest part to me.

Let's see how they designed the controllers. But my gut reaction is more like: I wished it was just a conventional handheld that you could just plug into your TV to use a Pro Controller with it.

Exactly, thats why i say it struggle to reach XB1 Level and not simple its a tegra. Gonna be some Sub Xbox one but noooot that drastical i think

i think its gonna be Dreamcast to PS2 Gap

Yeah true, more or less.

Also:

PS Vita:

~26 GFlops (PowerVR tile-based, but still the base Series 5 / SGX arctecture is more than a decade old).

The NGP / PS Vita seemed like a monster in 2011-2012 with 51 GFlops (somewhere bewtween an iPad 3 and iPad 4) but in recent years techheads discovered the low clockspeeds gave it around 26 GFlops.

Setting aside that NX is using a custom Tegra, be it X1 or X2, do the math on (at least) ~500 Gflops vs 51 Gflops and then 26 Gflops

:D

After the confused PR fiasco of the Wii U launch, the company is already settling on a simple marketing message for NX - of being able to take your games with you on the go.

this is begging for a photoshop of an unimpressed kid reading this quote on his smartphone

PREACH

It's going to be amazing as a Nintendo fan. And I'm not even all that excited about this thing being a hybrid!

But at the end of the day, it's about the software and NX is going to have Nintendo games in spades.

I'll reserve full judgement until it's officially announced but..

If it's what all these rumors are saying it's going to be tough. Being both a handheld and a home console means it's going to be sacrificing something for both ends. Battery life or size for the handheld just going on a guess and graphical power for the home console, both things people tend to look for when purchasing a system. I'm unsure if the novelty of having it on the go will be enough to power it alone, especially considering how handhelds do...

I'm excited for September but I don't think I'll hold my breath.

So you are holding them like NES controllers?

Uh

Also, multiplayer on the go is awesome - but split screen would be a major challenge. This whole multiplayer, two-controller thing is very odd to me, but I'm incredibly curious to see what it ends up looking like.

As long as the screen is resistive and has a stylus I'll be happy. Capacitive is actually bad for gaming. And 540p IS the sweet spot for res. And cartridges! YES! Third parties will be able to do a lot with that!

Nope. 540p will be too low and look like shite on a tv.

And no. I don't expect much in a way of 3rd party support. Looks like Nintendo are going alone again.

No matter what Nintendo does, third party sales won't be good. The best thing they could ever do is combine their software output for one system.

Hopefully there's enough power here, though. That's my only concern at the moment.

I think it will be more appealing to me if they make separate device, a handheld and a tv console that share OS, network and library.
Hope the desgin is good enough for both.

Yeah this look pretty close to what I envision. If the D-pad is just replaced with a group of buttons that can function as either or.

I would rather the other halves of the controllers be hiding underneath the unit, so when you pull each side out, it is basically two full mini controllers. Then two player games do not have to be limited in functionality.

This sounds amazing. I don't get the underpowered complaints. The wii u is weaker than Xbox one and ps4 but most of its games run better and look amazing.

I could see them having multiple controller add ons for different games. Or possibly game specific controllers.
Maybe a second screen attachment for 3/DS BC?

I wonder how digital downloads are going to work. There's no way they're going to put 500GB+ of flash storage in the console, so is it going to have a hard drive? SD expansion cards aren't going to take you far with full console-sized games.

Maybe there will be multiple SD card slots?

honestly going to miss the dual screen / clamshell design, but am intrigued by this thing. They need to have a serious launch line-up. The Wii-U's was a disaster. Also, how about a good name, Nintendo?
