If it's a Unreal Engine 4 portable that run this gen games at 540 or 720p, them a dock that can make the sames games run at 1080p or more, that can be a good thing.

960 x 540 is pushing it even for a 5" display. If this has a 5.5" - 7" screen, there's no way it could be that low resolution. 1280 x 720 would be the minimum for a reasonable resolution at that size.

(For reference, the iPad mini at 7.9" is 2048 x 1536 and $100 8" Android tablets are 1920 x 1200.)

Sure but they would be stupid to really go over 5". That's just way too big for a handheld device. Smaller tablets get away with it because they're 95% screen, they don't need to deal with thumbsticks, shoulder and face buttons. Having a 5.5-7" screen with all that extra stuff would be massive. It would just be a Wii U Gamepad, which you really can't trim down all that much without making it super uncomfortable.

How is that even possible?

I wonder if an X1's CPU is enough to handle a higher-end GPU? You have it expect a known discrete GPU when docked, kinda like how PCs just ignore the integrated graphics. Perhaps with enough development they could do something like DX12 and give access to both but the gains versus work are probably not worthwhile for anyone.

Cartridges in 2017 is ridiculous. Games should be digital downloads with cloud saves. Lol Nintendo.

It's not like having a physical option means those won't be there. 3DS and Wii U have digital libraries and I'm sure cloud saves will be built into NX.

Discs don't make sense for a portable focused console, and carts let people with shitty Internet, out of storage space etc. buy and play the games. As well as letting parents buy their kids games without worrying about having a card on account and kids getting through the parental controls and spending their money etc.

But optical discs recquiring full installations are not ridiculous? :p

I hope there would be an option for a ''console'' version with a portable screen and all that for reduced cost for people who don't want to use the portable side of the device but I'm assuming that won't be an option. And hopefully the battery is better than the awful battery life of the new 3ds xl and the wii u gamepad.
Considering a part of their idea is to avoid the confusion the Wii U caused, if there's a "dock only console", it won't be at launch.

Exactly. Watch how and if it happens, they fail to penetrate this console/handheld hybrid market due to the massive PS4 success and blame it on something totally unrelated to the fuvk ups.

Nintendo isnt Sony. They cant read market like Sony does and find massive success in it. Plus they dont have a powerful, recognisable brand like PlayStation to extensively help them out with "new ideas".

Instead of pulling a Samsung and improvise the PS4 formula, powerful console with competitive pricing and awesome third party support, they go the other way around with ideas that never take off (bar Wii) hoping it sticks and loose so much in the proces.

They are arrogant as fuck. Only Apple is capable of bringing new ideas and find massive sucess amd even then Apple does follow popular trends and still find massive sucesss...Nintendo?

They truly have no comprehension on how to read a market.

is this post for REAL? what the fuck

LMAO.

You know it wouldn't be that hard since all smart phones offer VR and the only thing missing are controllers.

Would explain why these controllers are detachable. I'm not buying the 2 player justification. I'd rather use my pro controller if I'm going head to head.

So we're accepting a 5 hour battery life out of a modern day gaming handheld.

Christ allmighty we're going backwards.

Who know what battery Nintendo will put in that device but I fully expect less then 10hrs of gaming from it.

wouldn't it be sweet in nvidia somehow let it sync with your computers video card. ULTRA POWERED!

Why would you even want 1080p on a small screen? Have you seen Vita's screen? It's 540p and no matter how hard you try, you won't notice any lack of quality (individual pixels, etc.). It's simply perfect.

Perfect? lol
I love the Vita, but the next handheld system needs to be higher than 540p at a minimum..
Have you not seen how amazing flagship smartphone screens have gotten over the past 6 or so years?

a) The PS4 and XB1 simply aren't this machine's competitors,
b) Nintendo won't make garbage controllers, it's the one thing they always get right, and
c) If you wanted a home console first, you have negatives. As a handheld person, I feel like I get a double bonus - a more powerful console than I was expecting and the ability to hook it up to the TV. There are no negatives from my side whatsoever - I'm utterly delighted.
Agreed. It will be so awesome to play JRPGs on this thing.

The controllers will almost certainly be garbage because it's a handheld. The form factor is going to be ridiculously uncomfortable because otherwise it becomes too bloated in the back. How much depth can you have on the controllers before they make the device a nonstarter on the portable side?

I can't imagine a comfortable detachable controller design that fit well into pocket.
Look like pro controller is a must for TV use.

As someone that never games on the go, I'd be quite disappointed if this turned out to be true. I hope the system is at least as powerful as the Wii U because otherwise I'd have no reason to get it except for the exclusive games.
Exclusive games are literally the only reason to buy Nintendo hardware

So many publishers had such a hard time adapting to the AAA landscape anyway. Let them concentrate on fun rather than being on the bleeding edge. I'm not 17 anymore, I don't need a hyper-spec'd machine.

We can't forget this: The NES was low-powered for its time. The Gameboy was low-powered for its time. The Wii was low-powered for its time.

I was referring to people wanting a powerful machine dreaming third parties will "magically" publish everything on NX too.

The landscape is changed meaning that big multiplayer games are played on ecosystems more than on hardware, especially now that iterative hardware is coming.

That's why Nintendo is changing its home console strategy by creating an alternative that suits both the portable crowd and traditional Nintendo fans alike.

The NX will probably be the best Nintendo console, as far as first party output is concerned.

Third party? Same as always. No one will invest in a NX to play CoD, Madden, AC, and such. Nintendo knows this and it's doing the right move.

This makes absolute sense from a business perspective. They had these awful cycles of not being able to support one of their platforms for a year at a time while the other saw a flurry of games. The 3DS has good third party support and I think they will continue to get that support on the NX. But now they can focus their internal efforts on one platform.

Sign me up for portable Zelda: BotW for my work travel.

From the tweet, it sounds like they're two separate controllers not half of one. In which case this is an utterly stupid idea.

Sure, for simple games. Kind of like how Wiimote and nunchuck did in some games. But for Smash I expect the option of having a full controller per player.
Also make GC adapter compatible with every console from now on.

1. the mockup being shared here is what's throwing people off. it's not going to look like that exactly.

2. people talking about 3rd parties and people talking minimum graphics expectations, c'mon. we see through that at this point. or, willingly or unwillingly, you're entirely missing the point.

You say "patched" yourself, which means that must have been a software issue. Nothing wrong with the screen. And let's not bring smartphones marketing nonsense into this.

...

I'm advocating for a higher resolution than 540p because a lot of Vita games do have very visible aliasing. Just because you don't notice it doesn't mean it's not noticeable, lol. I just used the menu as an example of something that damn near every Vita owner probably noticed at some point.

You can patch a menu to include effective antialiasing because a menu isn't intensive like a game is. That's not always going to be possible with a game, so the next best thing is to support a high enough resolution to avoid too much noticeable aliasing outright.

The way you phrased your response to me makes me feel like you don't know what you're talking about. It's (almost) possible to have a clean image on the 3DS's low-resolution screen, too, with enough anti-aliasing. Except that's not the reality of the situation, because anti-aliasing is hardware-intensive.

Sounds like won't be good for multiplats to me. Like Wii U I'll skip it unless it very cheap, cannot be buying a console for mainly a few select Nintendo games anymore.

I thought Tegra X1 > Wii U in terms of performance? The X1 if it is the final chip means the console games will look just like Wii U's?

It's looks like Nintendo are not aiming for high end graphics. I fully expect the WiiU and NX version of Zelda to look the same apart from resolution differences.

You are talking rubbish.

nVidia claim around 5 hrs of gaming for it's K1 tablet and that has a full 1080p screen.

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/tablets/nvidia-shield-tablet-k1-1318312/review/2

That's a tablet with a battery 3x the size of an iPhone 6 or 3DS XL. I talk about a smartphone size battery, which is what we can expect from a handheld, and you give me something 3x the size. My estimation looked like it was pretty damn accurate.

I'm not sure you know what you're talking about, at all.

There is no more reliable gaming source than Eurogamer. It's the best gaming website there is.
I don't care how reliable they are, they are not a confirmation that this will happen. People are keep taking this like it's word god, but I'm still on the fence about this.

Hopefully NX also comes to the standard of today's console like Xbox and Playstation regarding features. Nintendo Accomplishments could be their version of trophies. The interface needs to be sexy and sleek and something you can customize.

Nintendo Go is better I think.

Because he was definitely offering up "StreetPass" as the console name...

You folks harping on the "Go" name are focusing far too much on the momentary popularity of Pokemon Go. Come March, that game's impact will be lessened to a much, much more niche group.

I bet Miyamoto and co have this weird fantasy of people playing together on a tiny screen all over the world.

...

He sort of does actually. He still thinks in Famicom terms where Japanese boys would sit on the floor, a small bit away from their TV and play Zelda. If this actually is the console, it would recreate that in a way.

I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but it is pretty typical of an old geezer to be so nostalgic, an interview about Star Fox being the most underrated game was sort of an indicator I guess.

I don't see a reason for Nintendo to put detachable controllers; even if they are just for casual gaming. It is not needed, just sell wiimotes at 9,99 or less for the ones who want it.

About VR, maybe a couple of years down the line Nintendo sells a "PSVR" extension and headset for NX, once the tech is good and cheap enough.
