Because John McCain shouldn't have to defend himself. He is a hero to many for what he endured.

It highlights Republican in-fighting, potentially lures people who respect him and other military figures, and maybe even makes McCain rethink which side he's on. It's a sound strategy.

No I totally agree. I really want to like McCain, especially for shooting down the racist and xenophobic attacks on Obama in 2008, but he's just so whipped by his party that he no longer seems to have a backbone.
