Overwatch has developed quite a fan art following....

Most of the popular pairings I see in this thread make no sense. There's no dialogue, that I'm aware of, that would indicate that Marcy and Phara are lesbians, there's an almost thirty year age gap between Jack and Mercy, and do Symmetra and Junkrat even have any dialogue queues that interact with each other?

Honestly Ana and Reinhardt have the only dialogue I can think of that could imply feelings when you consider he uses a totally different tone, when remarking that he thought she was dead, than he uses anywhere else in his dialogue.
Most of them make no sense.

I'd like to argue Genji-Mercy makes the most sense, like Ana and Rein, but there's precious little in the game audio to back it up unfortunately.
That's exactly what makes it fun tho. Opposites attract and all that.
Except that they don't.
Honestly the thing that bothers me about when things cater to shippers isn't when they do that. It's when they intentionally leave everything vague forever as to not sink anyone ship. That is what I think about when someone has a problem with catering to shippers.

Also, do you have proof that it wasn't you behind that weekly brawl? I'm awfully suspicious.
Actually, I do agree that if writers try to hint at relationships, I like to just have some finality rather than tugging the fanbase along and using their shipping in such a cynical way.

People are taking shipping fan art way too seriously. Ship Reinhardt with D.va's Meka for all I care. It doesn't matter if it's "in character," let people have their fun.

You heathen.

The real ship is Meka x Bastion.

Father figures (whether dads or not) shipped with daughter figures is creepy as fuck.

I see you, Bruce Timm. I see you, Creepy Korean DvaxDad people.

Finally, something we can all agree on: Soldier: 76 and D.Va shouldn't be making out.

Except that they don't.

Opposites absolutely can attract—I've been in a couple of relationships that were exactly that.

No, I agree, and it bothers me in a few ways. While I like that Mass Effect allows your Shepard to be whichever way you want them to be, it kind of bugs me that Dontnod can't put their support behind Max in Life in Strange one way or another. And, in terms of Overwatch, I definitely fear that Blizzard might be scared off in terms of ever saying this or that character in is a relationship, due to the fear of pissing off a certain segment of fans.

I've interviewed a lot of devs and I like asking more light-hearted questions, and "we like leaving it up to the players" comes up way, way too often.

*suspicious yet devilish grin*

No love for Reinhardt though? The man smooth talks Ana every opportunity he gets in the game.
I agree. I thought it was the most obvious that Ana and Reinhardt had a thing once. Even Ana only specifically apologizes to Reinhardt for her disappearance.

Yeah, Granpa Reinhardt and Grandma Ana are the truth. Also one of the very few pairings so much as suggested in-game.

Agreed. The apology conversation between them is pretty much two past lovers confronting each other again.

Soldier 76 being her father is about as believable as him being Zenyatta's father.

What do you mean? There's nothing at all strange about two white parents producing a Korean child. It's completely normal. Happens all the time. It happened to me last week even.

I actually wasn't even considering the race. I was considering her canonical back story and her dialogue between them and other heroes. Those are the things that don't add up, and it would be the same case if you said Zenyatta is Soldier's son because it wouldn't add up to his back story either.

I don't think anyone actually thinks they're related. It's just a random fandom thing.

As someone who can't stand shipping, I can totally be on board with Dva and 76.

Not because I actually want to pair them but because it's going to create a divide in fandom. People are going to be uncomfortable with the incest that doesn't actually exist and that is absolutely hilarious.

Into healthy relationships? Nah, they don't usually. Most studies show that similarities attract.

But that's neither here nor there for the context of this thread.
If an Ally Mercy dies Genji sometimes screams Angelaaa instead of the what he usually calls her (Dr Ziegler) you cant tell me Genji/Mercy aint Canon.
🙄🙄🙄🙄
Pocket Mercy life.

What's canon is that Mercy saved his life so she is definitely important to him. That doesn't necessarily mean they're going to bone town.

This is me. I hate shipping, ruined Arrow, so "incest" away! DO IT!

Lack of closure and/or progression in characters/a story really bugs me and it is really really common. And it seems to be most common in any kind of romance plot.

Exactly. It just seems safer to cast a big net and try not to go against any one groups expectations/hopes then to write a "good" story with purpose. Having more options and leaving everything so open isn't always the best and sometimes I just want the creators to commit to something. Of course I understand why it's done so it would be dumb of me to get too hung up on it.
Yet here I am not posting pictures and just talking about it constantly. :C

Short for "relationships"

Pairing two characters together that wouldn't normally be romantically involved.

For example: pairing Mercy and Solider 76 as a couple despite there being no "canonical" evidence that they are

Right, but Mercy and Pharah makes sense because I can hear that one Aladdin song every time I'm hovering about and a pocket Mercy is helping me rain justice.
