Overwatch gets Summer Games update (new mode in Weekly Brawl, new skins/etc)

Unless my reading comprehension fails me, you only get 4 items in these boxes and only one of those items is guaranteed to be a summer item.

So assuming that is it you could get 1 summer sticker and 3 regular items worst case?

And 2 of those regular items are duplicates, worth 5 in-game credit that you can't use for anything provided by event.

Hahahaha!

So they'll sell now special loot boxes, that "guaranteed" contains 1 out of 90 objects (most of which is useless shit you don't care about), you can only buy them with real money and they are only available for a limited time so people will buy them as much and fast as possible.

Hello Canadian Devil, fancy seeing your non-subtle evil again.

Looks cool, but I'll never get any of these. I don't play enough anymore to earn a lot of loot boxes (especially during a limited time period) and I've already spent $40 on them so I don't plan on spending anymore. It's a shame because it looks like a lot of work was put into these.

If you know you're going to regret buying these items then don't buy them. Tweet blizzard explaining why you're not going to buy them. They're not going to change if they don't see significant backlash from the community a la Diablo III's real money auction house.

This system as it stands is abusive towards customers who bought a £40 game. Don't support it while feeling embarrassed, just don't support it at all.

Wow. No idea this would get so much hate.

I am no blizzard fanboy or defending 'anti-consumer' tactics but if this helps the developers to put out all the future maps and characters for free I am all for.

I mean, it is Just a skin or a sticker. As long as the game itself is free of 'pay to win' I don't really care.

For me personally the "lottery aspect" is kinda of appealing. It means less People will have that specific skin. Which in turn makes it more valuable.

I won't be spending money on these kind of things but it makes opening a lootbox a bit more exciting. Imho

It's the time limit that pushes it over the edge. It makes it not into a choice of "you can pay or save up coins/level up enough to get the skins" but instead of "pay us $100 or play 200 hours for the chance to get all the content before time runs out!" It's a blatant cash grab and nothing else, there's no justifying the time limit as this Overwatch is not a F2P game so should therefore be held to higher standards.

Singlet Reinhart is sexy. It's like they go on Pixiv to make new skins.

Limited time and real money makes this a no-no. Don't have the money to waste on random stuff like that.
lol why do people act like they NEED to spend money here?

I don't get the anger here, so you can't buy it directly then don't buy anything and maybe you get lucky maybe you don't.

Be honest you don't need those skins, they aren't even that good.

I won't buy, but this is definitely a kinda shitty tactic. Get your Rio skins now, before they go back in the Disney Vault!

Engineering a false scarcity to encourage those who would hesitate to purchase.

Reaper's bike has a tad too large wheels. Looks like a bike from disciplines not present in the Olympics (Dirt Jump/Slopestyle) vs a BMX.

Pharah using that suit advantage to dunk that basket (although her stance looks like an handball shot), others look better in something closer to proper sport attire.

Is Zenyatta supposed to be doing Taekwondo? Seems like a generic move for him to be doing, not particularly associated with that sport, the gi instead competition protections, doesn't help either.

Roadhog's sport is diving?

I don't even play Overwatch and I don't really see the problem with this. They're skins. You don't need them unless you have some weird compulsion to own all the skins, in which case you have bigger problems.

20 days.

90 items.

Only one guaranteed in each lootbox (which itself can be a dupe).

It's not practical to think you're going to get the skin(s) you want with these odds. Leveling takes too long and the odds are completely against you. It's microtranaction bait.

The collector lives in all humans.

Have you played OW? Have you noticed how big middle finger that loot box system is for those who love cosmetics like cool skins? If answer to both is "Yes" then you should understand why some feel that system is stacked against them and why they "NEED" to spend cash in order to get new cool skin(s).

Maybe I'm an odd duck but I think having "limited" skins that you'll only see once in a while is kind of neat.

I know we all want them... but not everyone needs to have every skin in the game.

They're just cosmetic items in the end.

Hope you guys have an upcoming level reset coming for some relatively easy boxes. I'm at 29 and will not be hitting cap during this event.

So you won't get them all. But what if there's one you really want? There is absolutely no way to guarantee it. Even if you shell out $500, there's no way to guarantee it.

I don't mind the timed aspect. It makes sense for 'events' IMO.

My biggest issues:

1) Separate loot box that contains "at least" one summer item which could be a duplicate (wtf)

2) Blizzard rendered their in-game currency worthless.

3) If you get a summer item dupe, they give you in-game currency that you can't even get another summer item with. (wut)

Horrible all around and they need to be called out for it.

Its not just about wanting all the skins. Its about wanting that one skin for that one character you play and knowing that you'll never be able to get it without effectively gambling.

Compare this to something like Street Fighter or DOA. If you want a skin for a character, you buy it directly. No questions asked. Here you pay for a CHANCE at getting it, and not a particularly good chance seeing as dupes are a thing.

I have a buttload of hours on the game and still play it basically every day.

And wanting cool new skins doesn't mean it's gambling, or not free, or necessary.

Yeah, i do agree that the system is pretty diabolical but dammit! i need my weightlifting zarya

Not being able to use saved credits is pretty lame. It's not like you can even buy credits directly, as they only come from loot boxes / duplicates anyway. I got a lot of hours in Overwatch already and this just feels a bit gross.

Chillax broskies, it's just cosmetics. There's no gameplay advantage being sold.

I like acquiring digital skins. I don't like the prospect of being asked to spend money for a "special summer" crate that may not have a skin of any kind inside. Like, if this was a special skin-only crate, then that'd be fine. But it's not, right? I'm more likely to get summer sprays for my $5 purchase than I am to get any skin (even one for someone I don't play).

Yeah, i do agree that the system is pretty diabolical but dammit! i need my weightlifting zarya

But what are your odds of getting it by opening crates? How much will that run you?

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but if you are:
I'm not complaining about a gameplay advantage.
I'm complaining about the fact that this is gambling with REAL money for DIGITAL items, and there's little to no regulation on gambling real money in videogames. It's only going to get worse as more and more addictswhales shower their favorite company with money for a mere CHANCE at receiving the one item they want, and then swoop in to defend any criticism with "bu bu it's only cosmetic".

If you're perfectly content throwing money away on digital trinkets of no monetary value then that's on you, but forgive me for finding it exploitative of their customers and fans.

I thought the loot box system was iffy but acceptable, this is just going full asshole.

I need that Track and Field Tracer. I would actually pay for it
don't tell Blizzard

Zarya as a blonde is pretty cool actually, and golf soldier just looks odd.

There are problems with the regular skins to begin with. You can't actually buy specific skins. The only thing you can buy are loot boxes which contents are always random, and sometimes you'll get the same skins. Yes, you get in-game credit for it, but its considerably less value than getting a new skin. With these Olympic skins, they are only available for a limited time, AND you can't buy them. It's a combination of RNG, micro transactions, and a Skinner box.

Yes, they're just cosmetics, and that's why the level of people's anger will vary with each person. I'm really bummed out because I want that Tracer skin, but I'm probably not going to get it. Hopefully they increase the chances of getting these skins.

The first cosmetic update and it's a promotion? Fuck off. Also eff off with those loot boxes. What's the point of coins if you can't get any of the items avaliable through chests?

You could already spend money on crates. People here are really actually mad because they might miss out. And my answer to that is "tough luck". It's a special event where you might get some neat skins or sprays. Chucking a tantrum about it is stupid.

I agree with this. Does everyone really need to have every skin they want. It's kind of cool, in my mind anyway, to have some skins that are kind of rare.

Yup, Blizz already breaking their own rules. Might as well remove in-game currency if they aren't going to use it. I'm surprised at Kaplan considering he knows how the community can get if you try to fuck them over.

Now that's a new low in unlocking and microtransactions? Where is Saty? He's vindicated I guess.

holy shit this is awful, what they were thinking.

The grave.
>8(

:( Can you imagine being $500 in the hole and still without the skin you want? It's completely possible, in fact unless they advertise the drop rates it might even be probable. Try to imagine how you might feel if you spend everything and still miss out on what you wanted. There's no reason to assume you'll ever get a specific item from this system.

Anyway I actually found myself liking this less and less the more I think about it. This is just straight slot machine gambling and will attract the same problems you see there with people. There's no reason this should be in video games, let alone full price retail titles.

Having skins that are rare because they're based on skill or determination is one thing; having them based on the fact that you're lucky or else spend shitloads of money isn't cool in the slightest.
