Overwatch gets Summer Games update (new mode in Weekly Brawl, new skins/etc)

and,an seems they're going to keep wringing players out as long as they can.
I don't think you realize how much more money this system brings in then purchasing a skin outright. Is it shitty? Yes but what isn't shitty is free heroes, maps and updates for years to come. That's the stuff that matters. You don't need to own every skin and if people want to gamble their money for a specific one while further funding development then let them. This system works and it in no way affects gameplay and secures a bright future continued content. It's also used by many developers successfully.

The time limit is what makes this suck. Was there no time limit it wouldn't be a problem.

Is it that the 90 items will dissapear after the time, or just you won't get one guaranteed?

What defense does Blizzard have for making the Summer items exclusive to these few weeks other than co-ercing people into buying more? If they had offered the loot-boxes with one guaranteed Summer item in them then added the new content into the regular RNG cycle nobody would be complaining. The monetary benefit of pissing off such a large percentage of their user base must be massive compared to just giving users an incentive, not an imperative, to buy the Summer lootboxes.

I really wonder what the internal numbers for lootboxes are, and what they would be versus a more consumer friendly alternative.

People are gonna have to burn such an insane amount of money to get the summer skins they want. Obviously some will do that, but I wonder how many will not buy anything because they cant justify the cost.

As someone who plays SF5, I feel like that game has a similar issue with it's microtransaction ( though to a vastly diminshed degree ). That game sells premium costumes for 4 bucks a pop, and you get to choose. But that's still such a ridiculous pricepoint that I can't justify buying more than the 1 costume for my main. However I would buy a bundle with costumes if it meant getting a line of costumes for the all the characters for maybe 1½ euro per costume. That would cost maybe 25 bucks, but it'd still give capcom 21 euro more than I'm gonna give them while they're charging 4 euro per costume.

So yeah, I really wonder what would be the best way to do it. I mean, obviously from a consumer and pr perspective, both Blizzard and Capcom are going about it horribly. But from a pure business perspective I'd be curious to know. Feels like this strategy is the "get the whales, fuck everyone else" strategy

They can still monetize cosmetics without invalidating the in-game currency.

It looks like the Summer Games loot boxes will be obtainable through the usual means: purchasing and leveling. The raw part of the deal is that people that've already purchased loot boxes or earned them by playing the game are potentially left sitting on currency that's been devalued, not just for the Summer Games but all new cosmetic content releases going forward, as Blizzard rendered it useless for this event so it's likely to do the same for future events.

Whatever the average dollars to coins ratio was, it's gone down. They're unreliable now.

Ok now this is imo bullshit.

I was very against the people yelling about how wrong Overwatch does microtransactions, but these sort of stunts make me feel like those people have a point now

The Summer items might not be time exclusive, the Summer lootboxes which make it easier to get them are though. Still need the announcement to clarify!

They'd better update/patch consoles to support getting Olympic loot boxes TODAY. It would be totally shitty to give PC players a few days' head start.

Yeah, I hope Blizzard will clarify that soon. If it's only the special boxes that are time exclusive this wouldn't be much of a problem. It would suck if all those 90 items are timed though. No way I'm gambling money away for some duplicate summer sprays.

First time I've seen this. I love Overwatch legendary skins, in general, and the ones depicted in the OP look amazing.

I didn't mind the loot box system at first, but if these skins are only available for that limited time, and they'll disappear for good after, then that's the point I start to get a little upset at the system.

Didn't really have an issue with their system until now, but giving credits for dupes from this new lootbox...credits that cannot be used on the new items...is just downright filthy.

the original lootboxes are fine, this is some bullshit.

I don't think that makes sense. If you can't get the lootboxes anymore and you can't buy them with credits then it would be impossible to obtain them right? On PSN it says you can't buy them or earn them in game after the promotion finishes.

Hopefully these will be similar to the Spirit of Competition spell/pet in WoW, where it was timed in the sense that it could only be obtained during the 2008 Olympics, but could be used (and is still used today) anytime after that. I don't see why they'd do it any other way, really.

Lucioball sounds awesome. Hope the update comes to consoles on Thursday at the latest.

So it is only Tracer, Lucio and Zarya that get's legendary skins, 2 variants each. Some character get 1 epic skin and most get none.

Everyone gets a voiceline. Some get a new victory pose. And three gets an emote. Dunno about sprays

It says the loot boxes are going to be gone after the 22nd. They could just add the items to general release stuff and simply do away with the 1-Summer-Games-item-guaranteed Summer Games loot box.
