Pokémon Sun & Moon | Info and speculation thread

Oh, well I guess that makes up for Choice items, Life Orbs, Mega Evolutions, ever-increasing quantities of legendaries, higher and higher offensive stats with each generation, compounding insane Abilities, both regular and Hidden, better boosting moves with better distribution, myriad tutors giving strong coverage moves a large distribution, and now apparently once-per-match insta-nukes.

Most of those aren't a problem, though?

Choice items carry a real and important constraint - being locked into a single move is a significant strategic trade-off. Increasing the quantity of legendaries isn't problematic in and of itself - look how useless Moltres is. Very few Abilities are "game-changers" - the STAB-inducing set (Aerialate, Pixelate, Protean etc), Speed Boost, the trapping set (Arena Trap, Shadow Tag) in some contexts, and Parental Bond; even then, many of these are really only problematic in the hands of Megas (that's Parental Bond and the worst users of the STAB-inducers gone), so it lapses into the problem with Megas. The wider spread of boosting moves is not really that problematic - if you look at Landorus, for example, U-turn is actually a more common option than Swords Dance. The break-even point for boosting moves is 2 turns, and it takes 3 turns to run a damage "profit". In Pokemon, most Pokemon are KO'd in 3 hits, so you need some good play to make boosters work, regardless of wide availability.

My view is that singles faces three main problems. The first is general power-creep over the generations, such that the number of Pokemon that is usable has tended diminish relative to the pool of total Pokemon. In RBY, there were about 15 OU Pokemon (inc. distinct Formes, although this is irrelevant back then...), which was 10.1% of all Pokemon (151). In XY, there are 56 OU Pokemon (inc. Formes), which is 6.1% of all Pokemon (910). It's frankly pretty disappointing that the numbers have only gone down, not up. Gamefreak have shown some willingness to face this problem, insofar as Gen 6 saw minor stat edits, but did not go anywhere near far enough. There needs to be a wholesale edit of Pokemon stats, and it needs to include some moving in a downwards direction as well as upwards for most.

The second is move powers. Stat creep reduces diversity of Pokemon, but it shouldn't reduce diversity of styles, insofar as if both attackers and defenders get stronger at the same rate, then the usefulness of attackers against defenders should remain constant. However, an increase in move power overwhelmingly benefits attackers. In Gens 1-3 and maybe Gen 4, healing was actually a viable strategy. Gen 3 featured a number of ResTalkers and GSC was obviously a stall meta (so perhaps slightly too far). Now, who cares if you can heal 50% of your HP in a turn? Almost everything hits harder than that. Moves like Brave Bird don't carry sufficient penalties for the brute force they bring to the table.

The third is Megas, but we've said enough about that.

If we're looking at more minor problems, I think that Stealth Rocks is problematic because it has a big impact on type diversity. 50% is just too much for anything with a double Rock weakness to be viable given that's 50% right off the bat with very little effort (unless you're a Mega or Talonflame). Even at 12.5%, all it takes is 3 switches and 5 knock-outs to the next Pokemon assuming on average Rock is neutral against the defender to have done 100%-worth of damage, or an entire Pokemon's worth, which is crazy for something that took a single-use. I also agree there are one or two abilities which need tweaking, although I don't think the problem is *that* widespread. If you took Protean off Greninja and Speed Boost off Blaziken you'd have solved all the ones that aren't Megas, really.

I hope the number of new Pokémon is around that total at least. Mixing in the Alola forms of the old ones brings up a sizable amount for a new region.

Guys this Hiro dude posted this tweet with the drop box:

Aquí dejo la lista NO CONFIRMADA de momento, a la espera de que la podamos confirmar (o desmentir) el 12

According to GOOGLE TRANSLATE: Here I leave the list Unconfirmed moment, waiting that we can confirm (or deny) 12

We should know by Friday, but I don't see how the entire dex with typings get leaked, not to mention the absence of the the Alolan forms in the regional dex.

Forms usually don't get separate dex numbers so it makes sense that they wouldn't be a part of a list of new Pokemon.

We seem to have lost all forms of logic and have started believing things at face value just because one leak turned out true.

It's illogical. Come on guys.

The STAB-inducing set (Aerialate, Pixelate, Protean etc).

Protean is the only "iffy" one of these but its attached to a flimsy piece of paper of a pokemon who dies in one hit, and the rest just make Normal-type viable for something as the vast majority of the movepool is utterly and completely useless outside of Khan and Porygon.

Doubles has suffered this past year from the absurdity of three megas and a legendary allowed on any team, but if you strip away that bullshit (which they most certainly will given the response to it) and you have a decently diverse pool of options, teams, and pokemon. Singles has gotten itself pidgeonholed by Smogon-tiers.

I'm not really sure as many people are believing this as you think. Anyways you'll have to put up with this for like another week at most.

The complete jumbled mess that the Dex is should really have been enough. The Tapus aren't even in the right order!

What's the harm, really? Why is it so important that we strike down and bury every rumor that comes out? People are just having fun and talking about a thing while there's downtime between info dumps.

It's just a list that brings forth some neat ideas. Nobody is going to be crushed that it isn't real, nobody is going to start a mail-in campaign to get Champod into the game. We all learned our lesson from Smugleaf.

I doubt GF designed 16 different "not-gym leaders" now called trial captains. I think each island will have 2 captains. We have to remember that each captain won't be in charge of just one trial.

GF is turning the franchise on its head this time, so I don't see that being out of the realm of possibility.

There was also the rumor about being able to recruit gym leaders for a new league, so having 16 different captains representing each type would make sense in that aspect. You are right though, 16 new unique gym leader type characters is a lot to expect for a new game.

Screw any argument for the list being real or fake, Goruggla is amazing and it needs to happen.
Well, if it would be a forward. If it were a back it can fuck right off

Even if this leak is fake (25-75 on it), it's worth it just for the names; they're definitely going to see some use in the future. I mean, I did the same with a Gen VI "leak;" all subsequent Farfetch'ds in my runs were named "Fly'By'Nyt" in honor of a fake evolution; Panquake is just too good to let it die with a fake leak. And Pancham's an early route Mon again...

I know that everyone has already pretty much come to the conclusion that that list is fake but you can easily prove that it is anyway. Ever since Gen V(?) the Pokedex has gone in order of where you find them in the game. We already know that the second island is Akala, the pink island, so the Psychic Tapu should have been before the Fire one in the Dex. Then on top of that, there is stuff like Bewear, which is never going to be that early in the Dex, and stuff like Lurantis, which we already know is found in the Lush Jungle on Akala Island being way to late in the dex. So basically, that list is fake as fuck.
Do we though? Look at the order of the Proof of the Island Challenge:
img_10.png

Yellow, red, pink-ish (the color used in the Mind Plate), and purple. Left to right you have Electric, Fire, Psychic, Ghost, the same order as the pokedex. So it's possible they originally intended for you to visit the islands in that order and then they didn't change the pokedex ordering to reflect that because they didn't give a shit. Or something.

Dex order is never really a reliable thing anyways, there have always been inconsistencies from when they first started doing that in Gen III. Some better arguments against the list IMO:

-Delfin? Delfin? DELFIN? Are you fucking serious this isn't Japanese Gen I come on
-The only gen we haven't had new fossil mons is gen II. And I don't see no fossils here.
-Malshadow? Sounds fishy.
-It's a random list posted randomly on 4chan with no reason to believe this is one of the guys who actually have sources.

Among other things. I'll be shocked if this list is real.

I definitely think that the 4 trial captains announced so far are all the trial captains of Akala island. We know Mallow and Kiawe are on that island, and all 4 of them have a pendant all with the same segment filled in, probably meaning they all represent the same island.

If so, that means potentially 16 trial captains and 4 Kahuna's.

And I figure that they must be able to battle since they have a signature type like gym leaders

I'm convinced we have more than four at the very least. We know Some of them are on Akala Island and if we need to do a few trials before leaving MeleMele Island either they are there and just move to Akala Island next or their are others on the first island. I don't think it's to much to have 16 NPCs that hand out trials.

Hiro doesn't have the inside input anymore, he's waiting until Corocoro leaks to confirm this alleged dex listing. He said it himself on his Twitter.

Looking back, the same leak that had Fly'By'Nyt also had a
space-themed Dark/Electric pseudo-legend
. As much as I love the concept, this is casting some doubt on this for me. Hell, it could be the same person!

Back in my day you had to at least create a blog and entire back catalogue of posts in order to fake leak. Now any rando can post anonymously on VP and as long as it took more than 5 minutes of work its a potential leak

What horrible monster would get upset over pancakes?

The same that got annoyed after a fridge, a garbage pile, and a key ring. I love these Pokèmon, but Gewunners see Pokèmon based on items as part of the problem.

I mean, the heartless cretin even knocked the Sundae Pokèmon; I'm sure they'd hate a pancake.

1 captain + totem pokemon + kahuna per island; that's how I understood it. Though a captain per type would be cool.

I highly doubt there's just gonna be one per island. The area where Lana (I think that's the water girl's name) is appears to be that place on the second island with multiple pools of water, on like, the upper left corner of that island. Kiawe is, apparently, on the second island as well, since that's the only island in Alola with an active volcano. The other two captains I also believe are on the second island, but their locations are a little more difficult to pinpoint, although I have an idea of where they might be.

So, at the very very least, it seems like Lana and Kiawe are on the second island, and if that's the case, there is more than 1 captain per island. I also think there are more captains than just the 4 that were revealed because Gumshoos is a Totem Pokemon. It would make sense if he belonged to a Normal type Captain. Mallow's Totem Pokemon is Grass (her type specialty), so it would make sense if this was the case for all the other Captains.

Others have speculated that there will be one for each type, since there is a Z Crystal for each type. After each trial is completed, the player will get a crystal of the corresponding type. I'm not sure if that is true, but I wouldn't mind if it was.

Mallow is totally on the second island. Her trial being Lush Jungle and Lurantis BEING the Totem Pokemon of Lush Jungle on the second island proves it.

You can't introduce a pancakes Pokémon without also including a superior French toast form that grows even stronger when matched with a scrambled eggs 'n' bacon Pokémon in doubles.

722 Rowlet (GRASS/FLYING)

727 Beltigre (FIRE/VARIOUS)

728 Popplio (WATER)

  • Robinroot: Grass/Flying, Grass, Grass/Ground, Grass/Electric
  • Beltigre: Fire/Dark, Fire, Fire/Ghost, Fire/Poison
  • Sirene: Water/Fairy, Water, Water/Fighting, Water/Psychic
Amazing if true. Robinroot is a shoo-in Smash 5.

731 Pikipek (NORMAL/FLYING)
732 Plukipek (NORMAL/FLYING)
733 Lumbird (GRASS/FLYING)
Three-stage early bird mon. Grass/Flying this time. Perhaps it gets Skill Link Bullet Seed?

734 Yungoos (NORMAL)
735 Gumshoos (NORMAL)
Early "rodent" mon. Yep.

736 Grubbin (BUG)
737 Charjabug (BUG/ELECTRIC)
738 Vikavolt (BUG/ELECTRIC)
Early bug mon.

739 Rockruff (ROCK)
740 Weruff (ROCK/VARIOUS) [ST/FY/DK/FT]

741 Bounsweet (GRASS)
742 Bountisteen (GRASS/PSYCHIC)
743 Bounsour (POISON)

744 Oricorio (FR-EL-PS-GO/FLYING)
It's the dancing bird.

745 Pawssum (DARK)
746 Possumime (DARK)
Opossum mon.

750 Adorasite (BUG/FAIRY)
Adorable parasite?

751 Quakitt (NORMAL/FLYING)

753 Bewear (NORMAL/FIGHTING)
We already know about bear hugs.

754 Komala (NORMAL)
755 Dormala (NORMAL/PSYCHIC)
It jacks Girafarig's typing. But has a way better ability.

756 Bruxby (WATER/PSYCHIC)
757 Bruxish (WATER/PSYCHIC)
At least the trigger fish isn't a single stage mon. Might be really useful.

758 Pesp (WATER/PSYCHIC)
759 Peskool (WATER/PSYCHIC)
Pesp? As in "pescado?" A school of fish.

760 Mudbray (GROUND)
761 Mudsdale (GROUND)
The donkey and clydesdale.

762 Minior (ROCK/FLYING)
763 Mightior (ROCK/FLYING)
So Minior is completely unrelated to Solrock and Lunatone. And it gets a "might" evo.

764 Darline (NORMAL/VARIOUS)
765 Darwisker (NORMAL/VARIOUS)
The leaked cat that is caught as a normal type and takes the father's first typing when bred. There are no Bug, Rock, Ghost, or Dragon types in the Field egg group as of Gen VI. Rhyhorn and friends are Ground/Rock. That also might mean that you can't get a Normal/Flying cat either as Farfecth'd is Normal/Flying.

766 Caterburr (BUG/ICE)
767 Parkoon (BUG/ICE)
768 Flycicle (BUG/ICE)
769 Hijakoon (BUG/DARK)
It's a Bug/Ice. Unique typing! It seems to be a caterpillar that makes a parka cocoon. Hijakoon might steal cocoons.

770 Snohom (ICE/GHOST)
771 Snorror (ICE/GHOST)
Froslass?

772 Delfin (WATER)
773 Porprise (WATER/VARIOUS)

779 Panquake (GROUND/DARK)
Softshell turtle?

780 Shrimpod (BUG)
781 Wimpod (BUG/WATER)
782 Champod (BUG/WATER)
How strange. Wimpod sounded like a base evolution.

783 Goruggla (FIGHTING/GROUND)
Rugby-playing gorilla.

784 Drakid (NORMAL/DRAGON)
785 Drampa (NORMAL/DRAGON)
Drakid turns into Drampa. Probably at a high level though.

824 Malshadow (DARK/FIRE)
Malshadow? Alright I guess.

825 Magearna (STEEL/FAIRY)
The Mythical Bakugan.

on the other hand, one mythical would line up with that "Pokemon on NX within 6 months of launch" rumor, though I don't buy that myself.

assuming that meant an entirely new game of course

I don't buy into text leaks at all. It'l be interesting to see if we get some news this week thag outright debunks some of these - if it confirms any I'll be super surprised. I'm also super confused about the whole different typings fo final evos - sounds overly complex, what if you want to switch or get the wrong type? Will they also all look drastically different? I'm not sold on it at all.

Anyway, hyped to see what this week brings, I hope Corocoro leaks early this week before I get lost in NMS. I guess we'll get an in depth trailer from the Pokemon Company of whatever Corocoro reveal.

If we get the "Various" typing that the leak suggests, do you think it means different forms of the same pokemon? It's hard to imagine the Popplio evolution that we saw being Water/Fighting, although Water/Fairy would seem to fit it much better.

The typings in that fake leak are all over the place. Too many types that change when they evolve. Gamefreak just doesn't do that very often. Wonder what this month's corocoro will be about. In the past for new games, do they always show new pokemon? Or maybe we'll get some other aspect of the game?

So far there's always been at least a few new Pokemon.

I hope the leak is fake. I want Minior to evolve into a living planet and Mightior doesn't sound like the name of a living planet to me.

I didn't see
dark/fairy
anywhere in that new Pokemon list, so if that list is missing the new Alolan forms that remain to be seen, here is what I'm hoping for:

Alolan Clefairy&Clefable (dark/fairy)

Cmon game freak, do it for me pls.
