Games capable of physically destroying the console

I remember Nintendo saying the Game Genie would destroy a NES and SNES because it added extra force to the console. Technically I guess they are right but I think they just wanted an excuse to ban it.

Nintendo used to say a lot of shit. They claimed using isopropyl alcohol to clean your cartidges' pins would destroy your carts and your NES and give your cat cancer, so you should only use their official cleaning kits. Which I believe had isopropyl alcohol in them.

I don't know about destroying hardware, but The Wrath of Denethenor (Apple II) would make your drive lights flash in sync with the game's intro screen in rapid-fire fashion. It was such a cool trick, but I can't imagine that accessing the drives like that was good for them. Maybe it was harmless, but who knows. :)

There was a *big* hooplah when Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition came out, people were blaming it for ruining their launch Wiis, claiming it ran the GPU too hot (causing artifacting and eventually failure).

While true that some launch Wiis got hot -> artifacting, it wasn't caused by this specific game, I don't think.....

god of war 3 the final scene with all the tornados and shit while fighting dropped my ps3 to like 4fps and it overheated haha. I think it was just gg on thermal paste.

metroid prime hunters and mario kart ds destroyed my L button on ds.

Pokemon Go almost bricked my Note 4. I was playing it one day and it shut off and would not turn on. I tried everything online and nothing worked except a factory reset.

So I don't play it anymore.

I don't know if it's true but I read that GTA: SA destroyed a lot of PS2 dvd drives because it read from the disk all the time to stream data and the drives were quite crappy to begin with.

I can believe this. I had a hard drive installed in my PS2 along with one of those HD Loader boot discs that allowed you to install and run games from the hard drive.

This made a significant difference in performance and LOD in GTA:SA and obviously cut out the need for the constant streaming from disc.

oblivion destroyed 4 xbox 360's for me. multiple copies of the game too. no idea how but everytime i put that game in, the disc would get chewed up and the drive would malfunction. good thing it was under warranty.

Soul Calibur III could wipe your entire memory card if you spent enough time playing Chronicles of the Sword or so I heard. I played a bit of SCIII but kept away from that mode for the most part because I was terrified of my card getting wiped.

Drill Dozer murdered my GBA's L&R buttons, especially that L button. After playing through it, I had to hit the L button from a certain angle in order for it to register.

Also I feel like the only person in this thread who played through Last of Us on a fat PS3 with no issues. Mine just keeps chugging along but it's probably on its last legs now :(

Crash Bandicoot could fit here. CD drives are going to eventually fail, but this game makes a lot of reads which could lead to a lower life span.

Kelly is a smart guy, and a good game critic, but he had a lot more to worry about than just gameplay. For example, whether Crash was physically good for the hardware!

Andy had given Kelly a rough idea of how we were getting so much detail through the system: spooling. Kelly asked Andy if he understood correctly that any move forward or backward in a level entailed loading in new data, a CD “hit.” Andy proudly stated that indeed it did. Kelly asked how many of these CD hits Andy thought a gamer that finished Crash would have. Andy did some thinking and off the top of his head said “Roughly 120,000.” Kelly became very silent for a moment and then quietly mumbled “the PlayStation CD drive is ‘rated’ for 70,000.”

Kelly thought some more and said “let’s not mention that to anyone” and went back to get Sony on board with Crash.

My fat 60GB PS3 shuts down after 5-10 minutes in Gran Turismo 6. No problem whatsoever in other demanding games such as The Last of Us.
I seriously think this specific game is overclocking the system.

I've also seen Dreamcasts get blown out by people playing Marvel vs Capcom 2. The issue here is similar to what someone described with the rumble packs and Spawn. People playing on old Mas sticks (an early custom stick maker who made sticks that were the size of cinderblocks... and weighed about as much) would be prone to getting the purple screen of death (really just the pause screen randomly coming out from the controller ports freaking out). However, what really caused issues was people who played on variants of these sticks that used optical sticks, which required 5 volts of power... but the Dreamcast controller ports only delivered 3.3 volts. So there would a voltage issue and over time the controller I/O board would just fry itself. Although that's more of an issue of people using hacked together solutions and the Dreamcast controller ports being hot garbage (which they absolutely were).

I get the purple screen when playing MvC2, though it is a ripped version. Strangely the issue appears only when I pick Felicia on my team.

Bioshock killed my launch 360. Got home on launch day with my nice, shiny copy, put it into the drive, sat down and watched the opening. About halfway down the elevator into Rapture, the game crashed. Restarted, did it again. Tried another game, wouldn't even load anything.

Luckily the 360 was still within the return period at Fry's, but that was an ordeal in itself, which you'd understand if you'd ever tried to return something to Fry's.

I'm pretty sure Gow 3 killed my fat PS3. Game looked too damn good.
FF11 killed my ps2, but that was cuz the game ran 24/7 between me and my brother.

Sunset Overdrive as it crashed and broke the hard drive in my Xbox One.

Folklore killed my first PS3. I saved the game before the last boss and turned it off to go out for a bit, and it got the yellow light of death the next time I tried to turn it back on. Fortunately, it was still under warranty.

Sounds like your hard drives happened to crash while you guys were playing those two games, not that the games crashed the hard drives. Bad luck.

I always heard rumors that Game Genie could permanently destroy the ROM of your game cart that's why i never used it.

That's what all of these are. A certain game isn't going to cause your ps3 to melt your GPU or overheat. If that does happen it's because your system already had problems.

Masses of fat PS3s already had problems out of the box. Certain games have been consistent catalysts for system failure due to the excessive demands put upon the board. It was a very poorly-made console.
