Donald Trump suggests 2nd Amendment Folks do something about Hillary

FWIW, I watched his entire speech live and my initial thought in response to that comment was he was making a "joke" about the second amendment people being armed and in a position to fight back when Hillary's judges sent the government to take their guns. I can see how it could be read as assassination, too, although that's not how I initially took it.

Still, in context, the joke to me played specifically as referencing gun violence regardless of the target.

He's not even right about that. She's not against the 2nd amendment anyway. Neither was Obama.

In a world where politicians are actually being assassinated by alt-right/far-right (e.g. Jo Cox), this isn't remotely funny or smart.

Trash tier. Hope this causes him all kinds of trouble.

It's like the US is doing it's very best to compete with Britain to see who can be the biggest fuck up, when it comes to politics, at the moment.

Let's just ignore the increasingly open racist and violent atmosphere that Trump is stirring. People at his rallies chanting "Hang that bitch" are just joking. It will go away if we just don't talk about it.

I can't believe I am about to defend something Trump said (and I am a staunch Hillary supporter), but I think this quote truly is taken out of context. Please watch the longer clip provided by Politico below and make up your minds. I think it's pretty clear he is talking about a voter block.

I watched it and it is clear to me he is stoking a fire by saying she wants to abolish the 2nd amendment (hear the roar of boos) and then teases further, "Nothing you can do about it....although the 2nd amendment folks, maybe there is, I dunno."

He did not directly call for her assassination but he is aggravating an angry mob, some of whom will be willing and eager to move from violent speech to violent action.

Okay, my bad, it wasn't exactly her picture, but that still was a pretty poor idea on her part.

Even then it doesn't go as bad as suggesting out loud "second amendment" solutions to a president or SCOTUS member you dislike.

No need to apologize.. you pretty much had it right.

I think it needs to be said that it really doesn't matter if he was joking. You simply cannot suggest violence against another candidate like this. I find any attempt to even discuss whether it was a joke to be a completely irrelevant discussion.

People in that position of power and influence should never, ever make jokes like that.

This is a huge problem. As a presidential hopeful, you shouldn't be making jokes like this. So who gives a SHIT if it was a joke. He said it.

Of course it's a joke, but would you bet some of his followers won't take it as a permission?
I said in the very same post he shouldn't have made the joke. I'm just not going to go overboard and say Trump is calling for an assassination on Clinton like some here are. It wasn't a literal statement, so I'm not calling it one. That's it.

"It was just a joke"

Yeah, okay sure, and if Hillary made the same joke I'd love to see them play that off the same way.

I wonder who we're gonna get next in 8 years

We went from Dubya to Sarah Palin/Lisa Ann to Mr.Small Hands, I'm thinking robo Hitler is next up.

Ah... nope. He's clearly trying to make a joke, since he thinks he's one part candidate, one part stand-up comedian, but it's crystal clear what he meant there and everyone in the audience knew it.

Not a cool joke to make at all in this environment but I'm sure it will be spun that it's just crazy liberals with sticks up their asses that need to lighten up.

I think I figured it out.

The 3-4 word sentences

The love for twitter

The thin skin, indignation

The lack of self-awareness, unapologetic nature

The bullying and death threats

Trump is actually an AI born from Twitter.

Neither of those is OK and arguably joking about sedition and open rebellion against a lawful act is more disturbing than individual assassination.

Oh, I'm not even remotely condoning it as something a Presidential candidate should be saying. It's crass and tasteless and in any other election would probably be the end of the run. Mostly just responding that even in longer clips it's pretty clear the "humor" stemmed from the people in question having guns, not votes.

Now, now. We can not say for sure he meant Hillary.

He might have meant the judges.

You really can't tell from the sentence structure.

I absolutely do not get this spin saying it was about voting. Why reference the second amendment when discussing voting??!!??!!

The fact that he made it this far is unreal. And the fact that he's even allowed to say these things and still run for president is unreal.

It's pretty clear what he meant from the video. I don't know how you could spin it, and how they're doing it is laughably bad.

Quite easily.

'Mr. Trump was merely stating that those who care about the second amendment need to come out and vote, unless they want to see it weakened or abolished'.

Something to that effect. Extremely easy to spin.

Edit: Apparently his team already has. Will be completely forgotten about in a few days.

I LEARN FROM YOU AND YOU ARE DUMB TOO

This semi-ambiguous shit is actually way worse for the GOP. How can you condemn something that isn't even crystal clear? Even though we all know what he really meant.

I'm surprised there aren't more people hijacking Trump's form letter policy statements, like "Dumbass Says Dumbass Things"

The voting angle makes no fucking sense when considering that the hypothetical assumes that Clinton is in the position to pick her Supreme Court justices and that his people would be left with little recourse.

The NRA angle, while not as bad as openly encouraging shooting a president or SCOTUS justices, explicitly notes that the NRA pretty much has Congress on a leash, which is not really a good thing to say either.

What's interesting to me if how the NRA would respond to this. They can't possibly be in favor of Donald Trump trivializing and joking about shootings if they want to be taken seriously as the pro-Gun and pro-Gun safety outlet. Even the NRA would have to condemn Trump for a statement like this, right?

.....right!??!

It's amazing how Donald isn't really held to a higher standard. This man literally suggested a call to arms if he loses the election.

There is no other way to spin that. In this context it's not joke or anything else. If Obama, Hillary, Bush or ANYONE. President or Candidate said that. They'd be put through the wringer.

This is a candidate with rallies of people chanting "Lock her up" and "Kill that Bitch." This is highly irresponsible.

This man can't pivot or reset. It's who he is. He had a speech yesterday where he seemed calm. Although it looked like he wanted to burst through his own skin and start saying the most vile shit imaginable. He can't help himself. This man can't be President.

At this point it's more important to put the high profile politicians still endorsing him on the spot. Do you endorse this, Paul Ryan? Mitch McConnell? John McCain?

Trump and his campaign are shameless so who gives a fuck what they say about it.
They've mastered the art of denouncing specific statements without pulling their endorsements. It's shameful.

I think the United States is pretty developed -- but there are still a lot of bad people in it and backwards beliefs/attitudes.
I don't care as much about a bunch of those hillbillies. This is about what the man who represents them says in front of thousands of people at rallies or in front of millions on camera.
eh? As if right wing nationalists haven't won or backwards right wing nationalist policies haven't passed in other countries??
Plenty of far right politicians win, but how many call for the assassination of their political opponents? When I mentioned developed nations I was talking about places like the USA, Canada, Western European countries, Britain, Japan, Australia, etc. Where have our standards gone?

Edit: I know about the Palin related crosshair image btw. Doesn't change the fact that this ridiculousness has now moved up a notch to a presidential nominee.
