A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

If you can meet people in the game or not. Do you think its possible?

EDIT: You edited before I hit post, I think it was something like "fair enough, but will you allow for the above possibilities."

I just think it's ridiculous that there's this sudden and massive outcry grasping at every straw possible, including this built-in airbag for if/when none of them matter, that apparently this has been well known all along and statements like in the video linked above didn't happen.

I'm saying that yes, of course there could be something weird going on and multi exists and you can see other people. But the...voracity on display here. The leap to every possible defense under the sun. It's just too much.

When the prospect of adding online multiplayer to a videogame could potentially double the development cost of making that game, it's no wonder that it's not present when you in theory have a winning multiple lottery's shot at encountering another person.
The question is still, why not making this statement clear. This should be a Yes or No answer and not a Maybe-But-Mathemaical-Unlike-Still-Properly answer. The marketing of No Man's Sky is really strange ...

People have said that

"People" did..? Or was it a single person who perhaps doesn't understand what "MMO" means..? I've been following NMS threads for a long time, I've never ever seen someone expecting a MMO out of this. It seemed to me that people expected some low key in-game interaction though, like to get to see another player in real time in some form. I might be wrong, I'm just not seeing it yet.

Anyway, I hope for Hello's sake that it's just a network error.

What surprises me the most is that two people found exactly the same planet.

I thought the chances of that even happening (i.e two planets being identical) were incredibly slim?!

Or else what? Y'all gonna get on that Class Action... action? More twitter death threats?

Hold your horses there pal, when there is so much confusion about your product you should come out and clarify

I like how the same people lambasting others for being on a "crusade" against this game for mentioning flaws or issues then proceed to defend it at every turn. Have the ability to call a spade a spade...my god lol

Can't say I really care -- totally fine with me if this game is just SP. Still it's pretty shitty that they suggested it might be otherwise. Why not just be forthright about the nature of your product?

Edit: Just saw the linked video. "Suggested" is not the right word. Guy straight up lied.

Even if all of the citizens of earth and their pets where playing the chances of meeting someone this soon in a galaxy this large, especially after the patch that made it 10x larger, without the ability to plot a coarse straight to the other player are almost infinitely larger than that.

Something is going on here and I think one part of it is that everyone is being spawned at the same area in the galaxy... but even then the chances are ridiculous so I think something else is going on here as well. If I had to guess the servers are messing up somehow and spawning players almost on top of eachother or something.

Only other thing I can think of is that the rout to the center is a linier path... I don't want to think that.

I don't know, something just doesn't make sense.

Define "actual multiplayer".

Being able to bump into other people and seeing them/their ship has been confirmed for a long time. Murray has repeatedly talked about the unlikelihood of it, and now there's a question as to whether there's more to seeing someone than simply being in the same location. But he confirmed the possibility nonetheless.

At the same time, he also said that this wasn't at all a multiplayer game and that you shouldn't expect it to be. There's no structure for players to do "things" together and no co-op anything. There's no established way to guarantee a meet-up

People who expected the former are more than justified in doing so. Those who expected the latter are not. Regardless of what one expected, though, this experiment from those two streamers in no way is definitive proof one way or the other.
Him saying that doesn't mean it's actually the case.

I'm confused. Sean has repeatedly said its possible. The video in question failed to have the two players see eachother. The game just released. Is it possible that this function is simply not working in that instance or at this time due to an error on any number of levels?

I see a lot of outcry here, but why would Sean have said repeatedly that it is possible if it is in fact not? They would have known that this would have been tested immediately. I'm leaning toward some sort of error on one side or the other. But maybe I'm missing something. I have not read through the whole thread.

People expected some light multiplayer because the devs said you may run into someone. It's not being naive and shouldn't be brushed aside. If it wasn't possible then the devs should have said "No, you can't meet anyone". Some people are acting like that's a hard statement to make.

So it is a network error, right? Or a silently scrapped feature?

I think it was something that was scrapped and will come back in a later update. Was their supposed to be some parity between PS4 and PC? Maybe they don't want to put the online features in until they launch on both platforms.. I think that is highly unlikely, but it's a guess.

I haven't been following NMS much. So the only multiplayer interaction is naming planets, and that's it? Changes can't be made to said planets that propagate to other players?

I don't see how this has been decisively settled in either way. The game has been out for less than a day, and multiplayer in this game was supposed to be something rare. It could be part of the endgame, it could be a random chance of one in a million. Unless there's concrete proof either way, it's way too early to express a judgement or accuse someone of lying.

Apparently possible technical issues aren't a consideration for this game. Even though they may very well be:

But yeah, if it isn't some other issue at play, and there is no MP *at all*, even the most basic kind which most people in here expected, then I hope HG/SM catch a lot of flak for it.

Would it really add anything to this game if you could? The possibility is so small anyway that 99% of us would never even come close to witnessing this. I don't think my time with this game will be affected because of this.

See news about two players in the exact same spot.

Just so no one tries to come in and offer a rebuttal to this video

Seems they are quietly trying to step away from those previous statements which is disappointing. I had wondered how they were going to account for people's specific placement in such a vast game.

But I thought it would have been cool to have some planets naturally take on a 'space hub' of sorts where lots of people congregate.

It has not been proven that you can't.

Well if nothing else, one thing that seems a little more definitive than the binary "yes multiplayer" or "no multiplayer" is that even if it's possible, it's likely going to be a pain in the ass as you and your friend will have a hard time syncing to the right instance or whatever.

Are you arguing that he wasn't lying and there is multiplayer? Because I thought those steams kinda confirmed that there isn't.

No, I'm saying bumping into another player does not automatically mean your game is "a multiplayer game". Similarly, when Murray said "this isn't a multiplayer game", he does not automatically also say "...and you can't bump into other players either".

Perhaps, but also one of them kept disconnecting from the servers so this test was a complete failure.
