You are misinformed. It is more than two times more powerful than the current PS4. Nothing like the Xbox One S.

Well if you don't care about the 4K features either then it's not a product aimed at you. House did say this was a product for the hardcore.

So the hardcore is classified as people who want to watch 4K videos??? I'm confused. This is a console for those who want to watch 4K movies and get better framerate? What's the appeal? Now if they say that your motion sickness in PSVR is pretty much non-existent with the PS4 Neo or something like that, then that would DEFINITELY entice me to get it.

I'm in!

Excellent news. I am very excited for this PlayStation Meeting.

so are they just going to show neo or will they have a bunch of things to go with it?

I imagine they will outline the VR lineup and touch on some fall titles?

It would be the dream if Shinji Hashimoto shows up at this event like he did at the PS4 reveal in Feb 2013 except this time he introduces FFVIIR + KHIII running on Neo. No way this actually happens though because FFXV still won't be out :(.

It will be a bloodbath on Gaf if they decided to stick to the 4.2tf one and handed the power advantage to Microsoft for the rest of the gen.

The rest of the gen is how long ?
Sony could come out out with PS5 2 years after MS and be more powerful .
Gens are dead in certain ways if this all works out .

Anyone think there will be a hammer announcement to go along with this? Not just "Neo performance" but a brand new reveal?

I might skip it of the Scorpio is better.

Better in what sense? More powerful?

If that's your definition of better you can pre order the Scorpio already.

It's kind of logical that a system focused at the top end, that will launch more than a year later, is going to be more powerful.

I don't think so...they are not exactly handing MS anything...assuming this releases this year, they will have BY FAR the most powerful console on the market for the next year+...

Then comes the Scorpio which will be more powerful for what? 3ish years? And then PS5 takes the power advantage back?

By the time Scorpio launches, Sony will have had the more powerful console for the first 4 years of the generation...and such a massive sales lead...

I might skip it of the Scorpio is better.

If "better" is defined purely in terms of power...than place your Scorpio preorder...

I'm actually wondering what your definition of "better" is then?

The Scorpio will launch in 2017. Europe will get Scorpio somewhere in 2018.

The "Neo" is a bold move on Sony's part. Not only are they, somewhat, shoving aside the PS4 ... they focus will shift to the Neo pretty fast. You can't blame gamers for chosing another (better has yet to be proven) system. This'll mean less sales for XBOX and an even bigger problem for developers. Yes, problem. Despite having a piece of hardware that is more powerfull than PS4 & XBOX One. Developers will need to, essentialy, create "two games". One that supports the PS4/One and the other that utilises the full potential of the Neo.

What if Sony releases the Neo ... continues working on something called "The Oracle" and then release ANOTHER console when the Scorpio arrives? It's going to be a fun couple of years, that's for sure.

That being said, I'll add Neo to my collection once it has been released in Europe. Skipped the PS4 ... so Neo will be the perfect console to have for me.

The PS2 is the best console of all time...wasn't the most powerful console of its generation...

They won't need to make "two games" anymore than PC devs have to make a "thousand games" for every different combination of PC hardware...

Better can be defined by price, games, ecosystem, support....There's lot of factors beside Teraflops that can determine which one is the better choice, and this change for each person that you ask.

Just try and remember all the gen's where the most powerful console wasn't perceived as the better one, and therefore didn't sold more units.

I don't agree that Sony will throw the current PS4 aside. There's millions of owners that aren't interested in upgrading their console. If they do this it'll be a sure shot in the foot.

Developers (i hope) will focus on delivering a great PS4 experience that will be expanded to run on NEO specs. If all the leaked specs turn to be true it'll be like developing for a pc that can have a better/worse GPU and a faster CPU from the same manufacturer, nothing incredibly challenging.

Do you have a source for this?

Wasn't this the same as XBOX, XBOX 360 (somewhater later) and XBOX One?

EDIT ... found it!

XBOX US release : november 2001
XBOX Europe release : march 2002
> 6 months later

XBOX 360 US release : november 2005
XBOX 360 Europe release : december 2005
> 1 month later

XBOX One US release : november 2013
XBOX One Europe release : november 2013
XBOX One Netherlands (where I'm from ) release : september 2014
> for me, 10 months later.

I assume that it'll be the same with Scorpio.

True.

In the end it'll be everyone choice wether to upgrade or not. However, I do think that (in due time) Sony eventually wants to shift attention from PS4 to PS-Neo. Even though games might play or feel the same ... a true gamer would always want better graphics.

Yeah, I suppose the enthusiast crowd will see the difference in 1080p. Think of Uncharted 4 SP in 60fps, with cut-scene models used throughout the entire game. I for one think that would be great, but those looking at the game by screenshots or compressed YT videos will have a hard time to see any noteworthy differences.

Long story short, I suppose Neo will be a tough sell for Sony for the Non-4k/PSVR crowd out there
.

I really do think this console is for the kinds of people who bought the premium XB1 controller, it is for the enthusiast gamer, the one that does understand and notice difference in frame rates or native resolution versus 900p. It seems to exist to give people an option for a higher end experience while having simple across-the-board compatibility for all games so no one feels left behind and we don't have the pain of starting a new generation, you can simply upgrade when you want to and your entire PS4 experience comes with you.

If you were going to buy a separate 4K bluray player then Neo will be the obvious choice for you if you're a PlayStation gamer. If you want the improved visuals you'd get on a decent PC but want it to come with console simplicity then get the Neo.

Given the unified nature of the PS4/Neo platform I think it's likely we'll see a decent range of older games patched to make some use of Neo's extra grunt, so people can go back and replay their old games as if they were remastered editions. I mean something like Infamous SS or Driveclub look absolutely insane already, imagine if we got those games with doubled frame rates for instance. And the graphics grunt of the new console being tied to the base PS4 system means every Neo game should really be at least a highly polished version of the game but it's an OPTION for those who wish it. Quite a few of us who moan about Battlefront being 900p (even though it still looks great) or complain about the odd dip in framerate in our favourite games can now be indulged with the new improved system. For casual gamers who might not even notice the difference they'll still have all the same games so nobody feels left out and publishers have an even broader market to sell to.

Will Knack reveal himself?

I would almost bet that it's a TGS reveal but...

Knack 2 would be possibly the last game you'd want to show up at Neo reveal but at the same time if they know how to play that card they could actually have it be a nice throwback to PS Meeting 2013 where Knack was the first PS4 game ever to be announced and shown.

But that would mean that they would kind of have to throw some shade and joke toward Knack 1 to show self awareness, it would have to be Cerny presenting and they would have to show gameplay that looks fun.

So I'm very sceptical of Knack 2 appearing except if it's actually legit great looking game.

If they did reveal the new Red Dead on this show that would be huuuuge for them. And does make some sense, since Rockstar headquarters are in NY...

This just doesn't make any sense to me. Sony are just going to give their competitor multiple years of considerable power advantage just like that? I do not look forward to thread upon thread of comparisons between games on both systems where the PS will come out a lot worse each time. We've been there with PS3 versus Xbox 360 and it wasn't a fun period (at least not when you had a PS3). Sony has the lead and has no reason to do this now at all. Also, i don't buy into the 4K argument seeing how slow it's catching on. Most people still buy DVD's and don't care at all about playing blu-ray's on their shiny new HD or even 4K tv so why should they care about 4K content? Also, there is hardly any content available in 4K at the moment.

So, your argument is that Sony shouldn't fight the 6 Tf Scorpion with a 4 Tf Neo because the Neo's specs will lose that battle. Instead, they should fight the 6 Tf Scorpion with the 2 Tf PS4... because that will somehow be better?

What do you propose they do instead?

I understand his reasoning.

It makes (to me anyway) little sense to release a system like Neo so "fast" despite it being a better system when comparing it to the PS4. Take into account that the Microsoft Scorpio is coming next year. Sure, this system might change and it might come out less powerful ... but it'll still be a powerful system.

Sony will have 14 months to sell as much Neo's as they can before Microsoft will release Scorpio. It'll make money ... but what happens after that? Will Sony respond and release ANOTHER system? Sure, people will spend their hard-earned money on Neo but will they do it again when Sony announced the succesor to Neo?

I have the felling they wont do a PGW keynote this year, and TBH we dont know how big this thing in NY will be.

No SIEE press conferences this year? That doesn't seem right.

Unless of course PSX is in Europe this year. That also doesn't seem likely.

PGW it is.

No, I definitely see his (and your) reasoning as well. But what do you propose? They don't release another console until PS5? They're trying to time this thing so that PSVR runs the way it's supposed to. I really don't see another option.

I personally think the Durango will not change anything for Microsoft.

The people who already bought a PS4 are part of the ecosystem now. All their friends are on PS4, and their games are only working in PS4 machines whether it's physical or digital. Gamers don't want to start from scratch especially because this isn't a new generation.

People who haven't bought a XB1 or PS4 yet are the cheap gamer market. These gamers will either jump on Xbox One S or PS4 (I'm sure that will get a price drop with the Neo reveal).

Or people who have not jumped in yet to this gen and are not cheap will may as well get the new PS4 Neo, this will have the extra year lead to Durango

Finally the gamers that care alot about graphics will just stick to PC gaming.

The console gamer who wants the latest graphics on their multiplatform games on a console are a really small subset.

PS4 Neo and PS4 price drop will make the sales different between XB1 even greater arena by the time Durango releases it will be too late. And 2 years after Durango we will be hearing rumblings of the PS5 which won't be held back by forward compability and will have true next gen games.

I can't wait! As I'm not playing anything on my PS4 in the near future, I'll be trading that bad boy in tomorrow to capitalize on trade in values. That way I have my cash on-hand to get NEO when it launches.

I would guess they are banking on their current momentum, plus a year or more of Neo being ~3-4x more powerful than their competition, helping them offset the challenge of a more powerful Scorpio when it comes. I think some people are really understating how big a deal it is to be available a year sooner.

Doesn't really matter what I propose though. Pretty sure Sony has a pretty good eye on what is coming in the near future.

Although it would've been better if Sony took the time with Neo. We almost know for sure that the Neo will arrive sometime this year with the "leaked" specs. What if Sony actually states that Neo has been pushed back for improvements to match the Scorpio?

They have an insane lead marketing wise .. why give it away?

PS4 (2013) > Neo (2016) > PS5? (2019)
XBOX One (2013/2014) > XBOX Scorpio? (2017)

Looking at the thing I posted above it does make sense ... somewhat. It's still a 4.1 TFLOP vs a 6 TFLOP system battle. Why would Sony give away the lead? ...

I ... I can't ... my brain hurts.

This. They'll have a 14 month lead. But that "lead" still depends on how well the Neo is going to sell. I'm pretty sure alot of PS4 owners will jump to Neo for the better/improved gaming experience. But are they willing to spend 600 dollars/euro's or whatever the hell the price is going to be ... every 2~3 years? Remember, there's still PS4 units being sold! Even though it is not as expensive as it used to be .. some still find the price of a console (wether it's a One or PS4) a bit heavy.

Sony has to be more careful how they are doing this because PS4 still sell great .
Neo is a way for them to keep the PS4 name while able to do a upgrade .
MS has it much easier because X1 sales are dying fast .
I think they don't mind MS having the more power for 2 years if it mean another 30 or 40 million sales under the PS4 name.

I don't mind a upgrade every 3 years for 400 to 500 .( will be cheaper if i sell my old system )

What happens after Scorpio?

If everything are as we assume and project moving forward ,then Sony forfeits the high end of console power for 2 years.

And then when Sony announces PS5 for 2019, then they'll have temporary leadership until Scorpio 2, rinse repeat.

Shrug.

What do you mean by lead marketing wise?

Alternatively, why would Sony give away a year headstart in sales establishing marketing dominance?

It actually makes zero sense.
Why would R* jump on a stage where they don't have all the limelight to themselves?

I'm surprised some gaffers still don't get that R* are literal video game Rockstars.

I think you just have to get used to the fact that consoles will be a pissing contest in power every few years.
The Scorpio will no doubt shit all over Neo in specs and comparisons in Digital Foundry and the reverse will be true when it's PS5 vs Scorpio comparisons.

It's now just how console gaming will work so don't stress yourself about it mate.

I want to keep my expectations in check and everything, but would it be sensible to anticipate more than just details on the new hardware? I can't help but want to treat this like it's going to be a typical PlayStation conference, with game reveals and updates and whatnot.

I truly think the power argument is overstated. If the consoles move to a full BC and limited FC model, consumers will care more about their libraries. This methodology is used by cellphone OS developers. Apple and Android want you so invested in their ecosystem, that it becomes a major barrier to you leaving. They also offer you various options to upgrade at different times. This model is successful because it builds consumer loyalty and eases development. Power will not and has never been the sole determinant of who won a console generation.

Because marketing deals. Also RD is a far cry from GTA.

I'm really interested to find out what happens. Do they eventually "synch up" so that new consoles release around the same time? Do they do just the opposite and space themselves out so they take turns having the latest and greatest? Or is this just a one off change and they go back to traditional console generations?

Can we do away with this console war BS? It won't be the end of the world if Scorpio is more powerful. PS4 is my main console so far but the XBO is still a fine console despite not being as powerful.

This isn't the same thing as the PS3 where games are bad ports instead of maybe just being lesser ports.

Won't matter too much in the end anyways when developers still need to cater to XBO/PS4 owners.

I want the Neo but don't care about 4k or VR. I just want a mix of better performance, loading times, less pop in, better IQ and maybe some enhanced graphical effects. The first two are the main things.

Playstation Meetings are a specific type of event, only for hardware. If you want a sensible reference, then look at what the PS4 reveal was like.

There will be games, but I would be surprised if they are going to announce New IP 1, 2 and 3. Or saying "This is the new Red Dead game".

But them showing Horizon, Uncharted 4 DLC and Days Gone on Neo is not unreasonable.

Well the PS4 reveal still managed a nice line in video game announcements and software focus, so if that's what this upcoming event will be like then I'll be pretty satisfied. I just don't really care about the Neo in general, and I doubt I'll ever own one to replace my launch system, so I'd like to know that there will be something beyond hardware talk to look forward to.
