You know, some people keep saying this, but why exactly would 'premium' mean that they are going to price it above mass market affordability?

Premium only means that its going to be priced above the current PS4. So what is the difference between lowering the current PS4's price to say 249, and affording the NEO at 399 for example over affording the NEO at the XB1's price of 499?

I think that would negate sales a lot more than give people the view of a premium unit

Because they are first into premium console market, the price they set will leave a permanent effect, setting expectations for future premium product.
They see a potential market where core users willing to pay more, an opportunity to have a high margin product sit alongside the mainstream product.
If you price it as mainstream product, it leave very little room for future price cut, it defeat the purpose of create a high margin product line.
They are not expecting volume, they are expecting high return. It's not a new generation where they need to boost the install base asap, Neo is here for the profit.

Just look at Nvidia. When you have no competition in the market you set high price to maximize profit.
They create a premium line (Titan) set a high bar price and test the limit of the enthusiast.
Neo will be similar, the bar have to start high and adjust according to reception. Never start low when you have no completion.

That would be pretty cool, to see NEO running FF7R, but who knows really. It might cast doubt on the state of the project on OG PS4, and i doubt they want that
Not if they use it as a comparison, showing that the ps4 version still looks like what they showed off before, and the neo version looks even better.

But, I don't think they'll show it. They don't want to divert people's attention away from FFXV right now.
PSX is far more likely for FF7R.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if FFXV showed up though (as they should've started a big marketing push for the game by then), even though Tabata said they hadn't started work on the neo version back at E3 (not sure if he restated that again after, haven't been keeping up)

What's the point? OG PS4 is still smaller than Xbox One S.

OG ps4 is still using 28nm APU, while xbone S is on 14nm. If Sony also goes on 14nm, they will pay less for APU, silmplify PSU/cooling/mobo/case. It's good business decision for Sony, and customer will get access to cheaper hw.

Wait, no obnoxiously cool PlayStation announcement trailer? Hmmmmmm
Anyway hope they revised the DS4 build quality, damn batteries in them suck.

Other than that I am excited.

I don't mind if it's over $400 .
I want Sony to throw the best tech they can at a good price .
They going to have the market for there self for a year they can afford to go a little high.

folks getting too hung up on that one interview where Andrew House said the word premium.

I personally think it'll only be "premium" in the sense that its more expensive than the OG PS4. $399 max

I'd love it if they came out with an Upgrade program like Samsung does with it's smartphones. You get the latest phone on a two year contract where you pay a little interest and have fixed monthly payments, and after a year you can upgrade by trading in your old phone, your current balance is cleared and you start a new 2 year contract. Something like this, but spread out over maybe 3/4 years until the PS5, and it should be combined with a PS+ subscription and tied into that.

I'd much rather pay monthly than have to find a big lump sum and then knowing you'll get a good deal when the next system comes out would be great too.

wait there are smart phone loan/upgrade programs where you have to pay interest?!?! thats madness

$399 is the minimum. $499 is the maximum. I want $499. That are not trying to hit the mass market with this so why not go all out?

I seriously doubt any Sony sponsored trade-in will happen. Why would it? They don't care which PS4 you own as long as you are in their ecosystem. Some seem to have a hard time grasping this.

I don't have time to look it up right now, but I'm almost 100% sure that either Microsoft or Gamestop tried this at one point for the Xbox 360. If consoles were double the price that they are now, I could see this being a thing for sure. However, profit margins on consoles are relatively small. I don't see Sony or Microsoft footing the bill for something they barely make a profit on in the first place.

Yeah it's like an extra £50 or so on something that costs about £500, over two years, hardly breaking the bank. It's not a loan, you own the phone but with the program you have an option to upgrade to the next version by trading in your old one. Seemed like a decent enough deal for me. Would like to see an option like this straight from Sony, why not?!

Knowing someone is locked into that system for a few years buying games for it and using other services.... that's the stuff big companies are looking for!

$499 only if they went for the 5.5TF (which I'm 99.99% sure they didn't due to the timing of this whole thing).

Shouldn't be more than $399 if they're at the 4.2TF specs, unless there's a 2TB harddrive in it or something.

This was one of the first awesome hype gifs I can remember relating to the PS4 reveal

18dwfvh3dp9ejgif.GIF

Lol this gif is awesome. Can't wait to see what Sony shows. Would be the perfect show to announce and premier the next Red Dead game.

As a PS only (mostly) gamer, I kinda want the best available tech Sony can manage in 2016. But if Scorpio titles come out on in 2018 looking vastly superior to what's on Neo, it's hard not to be bothered or go and get one. 3rd party titles are a big part of PS as well as the exclusives. Personally, I just want the Neo to make the difference negllible. If it's something like current PS4 > X1 power difference, I won't bat and eye lash. Ps2>Xbox difference though? Hmmm...

hoping that's the case, we'll see soon enough.

I see and understand not wanting crap ports but I'm sure games are going to look great even if the gap is there. As we get to these higher numbers with performance, the gap needs to be even wider to have a really noticeable difference. The Neo should be plenty for 1080p and even 1440p. Personally, I can't wait to see Ark Survival Evolved and Horizon Zero Dawn on Neo.

Found a link for what I was talking about! Looks like Microsoft offered a super cheap Xbox 360 if you basically over-payed for Xbox Live for two years. Very similar to how phone providers have you over-pay for service when you get a phone at a discount.

http://www.cnet.com/news/want-a-new-xbox-360-for-99-pay-for-xbox-live-for-two-years/

I get your argument to an extent, but there's no real guarantee that someone is locked into your service based on payments alone. That works for $800 smartphones as that kind of cash isn't easy for everyone to come by. A $400 game console is a much lower barrier to entry. I could see Sony or Microsoft trying that approach again, but I just can't imagine how it would work out for them.

How can you be so sure what they went with? Because of spec sheet from December 2015 that was not finalized? $499 was linked to the CPU by OsirisBlack, not the GPU. Not sure where that 5.5TF rumor came from, but I don't remember it being any one reliable.

It would not be the same product. The higher price would correspond to a better product.

It will be the product from the leak. I doubt there will be any changes. 4.2tflops, 4K UHD PS4+ for 399€ and the base model will be 299€. It's just the perfect price point for consoles. Of course I would love even more power but it's not gonna happen.

Why would you want to spend more money for the same product?

I think he means if the bill of materials are reflective, at least somewhat proportionally, to the cost = better components for the higher cost.

Edit: Damn I skimmed over and black vine already said what I said in less words. My bad.

So, your saying you want 499 because your expecting Zen CPU? There is no other CPU that could justify 499, and there is no APU Zen right now as shown by Sony's slides, which they specifically say Jaguar CPU upclocked.

I think people are going to have to get over the fact that Sony never said this device was not aimed at the mass market. They can have a budget unit like normal PS4 and a higher end unit like NEO without acting like its some high end PC components. This GPU is basically mid range like PS4's GPU was 3 years ago, and the rest of the components are taken directly from OG PS4, thus their margins on cost are probably not high.

I still think it will be more powerful then than spec sheet. But hey will know for sure in a month's. People are putting too stock into something that could have been inaccurate even at the time it leaked.

For me i don't mind if we get more power it could be from the CPU , GPU , Ram , bandwidth .
Don't really matter to me , people are to stuck up on a better CPU .
These are not PCs unbalance or not devs are going to make the best with what they got .

I have no idea what it would be. I just know a $499 option is/was supposedly on the table and would have significantly better performance then the $399 option. Not really trying to debate on the possibility of whether it will happen any more. We've been doing that for months and I'm tired of it. I'm saying that is what I want. If it doesn't happen that's fine.

I'll pay whatever. Can't wait for September and October

Ps4k
Psvr
Gpd win
NX reveal
Iphone 7

And I'll get myself a 4K tv

Osiris confirmed that he heard the 5.5TF number as well.

And it wasn't a leaked "spec sheet". It was dev documentation. And it was the dev kit filings that were made in december 2015, not the documentation. (What we do know is the documentation was made before April 1, 2016) The documentation specifies it the devkit available early april as "final spec" There are manufacturing contracts that need to be set well in advance, and production of the components starts a few months before the product hits the shelf.

Mix that with it being announced in September, Andrew House's comment that indicates they're going to have a short time between the announce and the release of the system and all that is enough to make me nearly a 100% sure that we aren't going to be seeing something that is a significant upgrade from the 4.2TF specs that we have currently. There could be minor upgrades here and there though.

Anyways, we'll find out for sure in 4 weeks though.

Yea the wait is almost over, tired of the speculation as well. I want the 5.5 better CPU one at a higher price, but I'm happy with a beefier ps4 regardless.

Btw blue pill red pill was mentioned in original leak by Osiris. Speculation has been Sony is going with the 4.2 version because it's coming this year and that's what the latest Dev kits were. Just for anyone that thinks the higher spec version was tales from random GAF user buttocks. 2 versions have been considered, both would be less powerful than Scropio obviously, just one a lot closer to parity.

I'd call you a communist.

Yeah, I thought $250 as well but thought it may be too low unless they release a slim version that cost less to manufacture.

a $100 drop in a year? absolutely no way

Good one, Andrew.

I would say you're forgetting that Sony's main concern is profitability.

All good points, but hear me out. Massa says that Sony's main concern is profitability as a reason for not cutting OGPS4's price so low.

Sure and i'd agree..if OG PS4 was the only unit on the market. But your forgetting the simple fact that Sony apparently will now have two SKU's.

A budget one and a higher end one. Even if they dropped the price of OG PS4 to 249, the sales they could accrue from that impulse buy price in addition to the NEO's sales would more than make up for the drop in OG PS4's pricing.

People keep saying this as if Sony would be okay with the Neo selling horribly

$399 is the sweet spot, you know it, Sony know it. That's why it will not be $399.
You don't hit the sweet spot when you launch something for the untapped market without any competition, you push it a little.
Sony will add a little incentive for that price, maybe a little more ram, or a hybrid drive or something, just enough to make you say, fuck it, milk me.

They are not setting that price for Neo, in a way they also create a standard for Scorpio.
They both want to in it for the money, no point start a price war when the market still have a lot of milk.
