New Rogue One Trailer Coming Thursday

I'm excited for the trailer, but the CG is rough in that first shot.
Very Attack of the Clones-esque poor CGI there. Hopefully just an unfinished shot, the lighting doesn't look right.

The imperial ship in the first trailer was the best looking ship since the original trilogy. Hopefully most of the effects work meets that high water mark.

This is a really great perspective. I've grown up with these films, seeing the first one in 1978 and each in the theater on release thereafter. I was sure we'd never see anything beyond the OT for more than a decade. While I'm not a fan of I -- which I found boring, the greatest sin of a Star Wars movie -- II and III had many great moments (and I had a couple too). Above all, though, I was grateful to see Star Wars again on the big screen. I figured that'd be it, but then we got the Clone Wars movie (which wasn't the greatest, but my son watched it in the theater with me as he did III and that made it better) and then this latest batch which really seems to be hitting its stride. I'm thrilled this one will be revisiting the OT and have lots of Empire stuff -- my favorite part of SW. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. =)

Exactly, you and I are close in age, although I was too young to see the first one. i did grow up on them, so I understand.

Greig Fraser is killing them softly with these gorgeous shots.

When you allow yourself to not take these movies so personally, and take them as a fun entertainment, you get so much joy out of them, even 1-3.

I am just happy that the doors to this universe are open again, and I am grateful for everything we get out of it, and all interpretations of the Universe.

5 years ago, I wasn't sure if I would ever see anything Star Wars related on the big screen again in my lifetime.

I love this attitude. It's a shame there are literally a dozen of us on the Internet.

well, if you extend it by the number of people who think similarly, but still consider episode 1-3 shitty movies that soured a lot of fans on the idea of new installments to the franchise, there's literally millions who are eager to see new stories within the StarWars universe ;)

Ooh, I forgot that the trailer was coming today. Exciting!

I just need to see some Vader. Some Vader, at least one scene where Felicity Jones isn't unbearably wooden. That's all I ask. Come on Felicity, I believe in you.

Do we know what time we can expect the trailer to hit?

European StarWars Facebook (DE and UK) facebook pages report as "trailer coming on Friday" (and have confirmed this to be due to the time zone shift), so expect it sometime between 6pm and midnight.

NBC has promoting it as airing during the Olympics coverage, so I'd guess somewhere between 8 and 9, when it's still on tape delay.

That's no surprise at least to me, most trailers that were announced dropped at or past midnight in my timezone.

Between 8pm and midnight Eastern - as that's when the NBC Olympic coverage is on.

Her delivery in the Celebration reel was fantastic, I thought. Hopefully they got rid of that stupid "I rebel" line. I have hope. Not her fault if she has trash dialogue to work with.

Do we know if this is releasing on YT simultaneously?

You know, if there's one thing the comics made me want, it's that I hope he does some classy Vader snark in the film.

I hope not. I found that to be fairly terrible writing. It doesn't have the humorless gravity that Vader tends to have.

Just doesn't seem correct to me.

What Vader is in Rebels in the comics is not what Vader was in New Hope but what decades of thinking he is a total badass has made him in our minds. Since the story group is in charge of everything, I'm sure Vader will be more inline with what he is now in the movie and I'm all for it. It won't just be implied that he's one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy, they're gonna show us why he is so feared.

I think the comics dialogue has been pretty good. He was that way in the movies... wildly scary and menacing, but with just a bit of dark, dark snarky sarcasm.

As seen in lines like "I find your lack of faith disturbing" and "Apology accepted, Admiral Needa".

I think you guys are just so used to the specific limited dialogue he had in the movies that any additional dialogue attributed to him seems weird regardless of how close it is.

The guy who waits behind a banquet table to ambush the rebels and then says "We would be honored to have you join us" in ESB would totally also say "I've killed so very many fathers, you'll have to be more specific". I think the comics have done a good job of keeping him concise and dramatic, but with just a hint of that dark humor.

Vader has a few moments of humor.

"Apology accepted, Captain Needa."

Main issue I see in the comics is he's a bit wordier than usual.

No thanks. Vader is perfectly menacing and gripping as a character (setting up ROTJ as well) in ESB. Damn near perfect film.

Yup, this is the Vader I know. Now that's dark humor. Witty and fits with his dry delivery.

I think the post was talking more about his fighting style and portrayal of power.

I'm getting a much better sense of power from the fight with Luke after watching that video, IMO. Much better scene and more mysterious/menacing. Fighting style didn't look too much different, just manipulates blaster bolts which he also does in ESB.

I want Vader fighting Donnie Yen, where it may be supremely one-sided, but Yen uses his hearing and agility to outmaneuver the lightsaber.

...I don't expect any of that in the trailer, though.

I think Gillen writes a good Vader. The dialogue in Star Wars #1 was a bit dodgy. Luke calling Obi-Wan 'General Kenobi' was worse than anything Vader said.

Indeed.

Vader's full potential couldn't be shown because of the era that the movie was made in, now they can.

Am I missing something here though? In both clips he uses the Force to manipulate objects, revealing his power. I thought it was done much better in ESB where he throws shit at Luke while totally abandoning the saber duel. Sometimes less is more because you allow the audience to make those connections on their own instead of outright showing them "this is how powerful Vader is", which works so much better and has a more meaningful impact. Yoda lifted an X-Wing.. but through the use of mythology and mystery as building blocks, the audience is left wondering HOW powerful he is instead of being shown. I think that's when SW works best. It's not a matter of being technically limited. ESB has the best scene in all of SW (Yoda/Luke/X-Wing) and it's great because of what it doesn't give the viewer.
