My LG G4 just died

Brother and I both got a G4 at the same time. Mine is still going strong (watch it break now that I say this) but my brother went through 3 G4's before calling it quits and just upgrading to the G5.

Such a strange issue that I hope I never encounter. I love my G4 and want to keep it for a while yet.

What don't you like about the G5?

From earlier in the thread:

"No Dual App anymore
Quick Remote no longer located in the notification bar
no rear volume rocker (ie: greatest external phone feature ever)
More cumbersome to remove the battery
Sound quality seems like it is cut in half. Not volume, mind you, but just the amount of sounds coming out of the speakers sounds like the symphony is down a few instruments.
Slippery as shit."

I'm holding onto mine until next Feb. I love it as it does everything I ask it and never chugs like my Nexus 5 did. I did have a G3 before and that was also a good phone.

I'll keep this info in mind though.

Got the same type of error with my G3. Will never buy an LG again.

That was the issue I got with my G3. I swore off LG after the shitshow that was the enV2, but came back for the G3 cause it looked great and seemed to perform well. I'm back on avoiding LG phones for the rest of forever.

I had mine replaced twice by att. My one year warranty is over though so I'm anxious.

Supposedly it was fixed by end of 2015 so if you have a newer model/replacement you should be OK.

I'm definitely NOT buying LG next time

Holy shit, is this for real. I was two seconds away from making a thread, haha. My G4 died yesterday, not even the boot-loop problem. Just straight up died, all my data is gone, appointments that i made, notes i took down, pin numbers, door numbers, contacts, everything just fucking gone. If it wasnt for the fact that i have only 20 dollars remaining to pay off my phone i would go for a completely different brand, the worse part is that this is the second time. Happened with my G3 which was why i upgraded to the G4 in the first place. Fuck LG, such a shitty fucking company.

Hahahaha, I thought everyone knew LG phones had built in time bomb software that disabled the phone after the one year warranty.

LG needs to go back to what made the LG G2 so good. Tiny bezels, great screen, big battery, good performance, good camera. Just fix the software and build quality. If Samsung can do it (mostly) so can LG.

God dammit, I was really thinking about replacing my G2 with a G4, but after reading this NOPE.

Yup, me too! I got my mom a cheaper LG phone recently (the Leon I think) and she has already had it replaced due to a problem. It really does sound like LG quality fell down a hole.

Happened to mine about 14 months after I got it. LG fixed it for free, so as long as this one doesn't break I will still consider them next time I upgrade if they still have the features I want. I still have my old S4 though so I could just use that while it was out for repair, would have been more pissed if I didn't have a back-up. Seeing you are still within one year, Verizon should just switch it out immediately for you.

My G3 is still going strong without problems (except maybe a minor wifi issue? Not really sure)... though I want a S7 Edge next. I hope my G3 doesn't die before then.

My Z3 is fine, best phone I've ever had, definitely recommended.
Funnily enough, one of my friend said me that it was the worst he ever had.

Really happy with my G3.

Choosing a phone, especially targeting reliability, is awfully hard.

I just recently had the boot loop issue with my G3, only buying a new battery seems to have fixed it in my case. Is this an issue with all LG phones? When I was Googling the problem and aaking around on social media, it seemed pretty common.

My G3 also ended up with the issue a few months back. Ended up moving on to a S7 Edge.

and apparently it's a common fatal flaw. What the FUCK, LG?

According to the internet, this is a problem with the G4 motherboard that's been around since its debut. The phone randomly crashes and then gets stuck in a boot-loop from which there is no escape. I've been able to get it to boot to the home screen twice now but then it immediately restarts again seconds later. There is no fix and LG has not officially acknowledged what the issue is with the phone. It looks like people are able to get their phones replaced so that's good but this grinds my gears something fierce. I've only had this phone for about 6 months and was liking up to now. I'm hoping I can swap it for something else because I don't want to deal with this shit again.

I was curious if there were any other G4 users who on gaf who have had this same problem and if Verizon was cooperative in getting it replaced. I also wanted to get the word out because this is a pretty shitty design flaw that I wasn't aware of whatsoever when I bought this phone turned paper weight.

My G3 went into a boot loop and replacing the battery fixed it. Will it loop when plugged to a charger?

My G3 no longer reads my sim card correctly, I keep getting Sim card invalid errors or sim card not readable and even got a new card but still not working, of course the phone is out of warranty.

Mine was doing this too, and also the screen started to die, as well - also an extremely common issue. The screen just starts going black/gray almost like an etch-a-sketch as it fades. There's a fix for it, but my G3 ran for exactly 2 years, so I said fuck it and bought a Nexus 6P instead of fixing it at a YouBreak location - especially since the sim card issue became more reoccurring.

Was a great phone, though otherwise. Minimal bloat, great response, fast. I had a large OT for it too.

Well dang, there goes my 25$ commission.

But seriously don't buy LG, I recommend Samsung for reliability or Sony if someone wants a smartphone that doesn't feel like a plastic toy

This is funny.

Especially because Samsung can't be bothered to fix its longstanding WiFi bug.

Mine did the same and after a couple reboots completely died and would not turn on. It was still under warranty though and just paid next day delivery for my current G4. Seems ok but did install a ROM this time.

Just switch to iOS. My iPhone 5s that I bought at launch is still working flawlessly ( aside from the battery going down the shitter because its almost 3 years old). My gf uses it as her daily driver and so far so good.

I use an iPhone 6s and it us probably the best phone I have ever owned.

Sorry to hear about your G4 op.

My G3 died on me this week but it was my fault, i connected it to the aux entry of an old stereo and it burnt sadly so i got the Xperia M5, it is a nice phone but it does not have a gyro sensor, can you believe that?, i do not regret my purchase because i have also got the Atletico de Madrid soccer jersey for free.

Still have mine as a secondary phone, though when I first bought one it came with the issue straight out of the box, so I was able to get it replaced the same day. Current one has been going strong for over a year now though.

Yeah this happened to my LG G4 as well. I'm on T mobile. Mines was still under warranty so they ordered me a new one but I had to pay $22 for shipping fees which is dumb. Might just switch back to iPhone once the 7 comes out.

Hahahaha, I thought everyone knew LG phones had built in time bomb software that disabled the phone after the one year warranty.

This issue seems similar to the RLOD/YLOD issues that plagued early last gen consoles. Something seems to overheat in the motherboard causing a connection to fail due to bad soldering or improper circuit connection. Qualcomm's 2015 chips being shit tier in terms of thermal management doesn't help.
It doesn't seem LG is to eager to resolve this since the G5 is out.
I really feel bad for the guys running LG's customer support in Greece. They are really doing an amazing job replacing the motherboards on all the defective G4 that come their way for free but it seems like LG isn't issuing a properly redesigned board that would prevent the issue from reappearing.

Happened to mine a month ago after 9 months of owning it. Sent it straight to LG and they fixed in a few days. Was surprised to see it was a big problem.

Been working fine, but I'm hoping it'll last till the new Nexus phones come out. The Axon 7 looks interesting as well.

Just tried it and yup, still loops.

I think I'll try to trade it in for an S7, hopefully verizon doesn't gouge me too much

That really sucks, dude.

I don't recall, but have you called LG yet?

Buh, I called ATT and I'm outside my manufacturer warranty. Is this something I can reach out to LG directly?
Yeah, but you might want to escalate through att. When mine went out I kept pushing Verizon and the tech connected me to LG directly which might have helped seeing as the phone technically only has a one year warranty, and I was past that.

I remember seeing that persons post and they clearly had a defective phone. My friend has one and she loves it.

Wasn't just me. My brother in law got the V10 too, and, sure enough, after about two months of use, the phone started lagging and getting super hot all the time.

Dont know if anybody here has said it already but if you want to get your data out before returning it for repair or exchange, there is a way.

This happened to me about a week ago. I just received my replacement from Tmobile (which I had to pay $20 for like WTF tmobile?)

You have to get the SD card, SIM card and Battery out. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees (bare with me), put the phone in the oven for 5m and then carefully take it out. its gonna be crazy hot. Leave the oven on in case you have to do this again.

While your phone is crazy hot, put the battery in the phone and you'll see that its gonna boot up normally like it always does and ull be able to do a backup. As soon as the phone starts to get colder youll see how its gonna start to lag again until quickly freezing and then going into bootloop again.

So..repeat.

There was a point where my phone stopped working with the oven trick so I had to do the AC trick. Put the phone in front of an AC and let the AC blow cold air directly to the phone at its lowest temperature . If you have some sort of Window AC and it has grills, try to place the phone inside the grill and find a way to make it stay put.

It fucking sucks! It happened to me while I was being interviewed over the phone for a job. I hope my replacement G4 works until the next iPhone gets announced because that might be where I go. Unless I decide to get the Samsung S7 instead or the next Nexus.

Same thing just happened to me, OP. Last night I was googling something and the phone froze for about 20 seconds then went into the reboot loop. I had no idea what was going so I looked the problem up to see if I could troubleshoot it. It's a longstanding known issue, and it's a manufacturer defect with the mobo. My phone is a month and a half out of warranty, and I'm on hold with LG as we speak. T-Mobile said there's nothing they can do, so I'm hoping LG will replace or repair the phone.

Should have been recalled, tbh.

Ah, this issue, ILAPO (Infinite Loop Auto Power Off). I fixed one recently, there is a fix which uses the LGUP tool (does not cover all variants), in order:
-Fastboot
-Downgrade to lollipop
-Flash TOT files to disable big core
-Root
-Re-enable the 4 low powered cores using LG G4 4CORE FIX app that can be downloaded

Edit: Was looking for a guide, please see this and read the description thoroughly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbJXwPmbXFc

I'm using the phone i fixed and it's working wonderfully.
I believe it affects LG G4 phones manufactured before September 2015.

guek, which model number G4 do you have?

Welp, mine died this morning with the infinite loop. Never had this happen to me with a phone in the decade or so that I've been an Android user, you done fucked up LG!

I have a Note 7 arriving on Monday but I'm going to try that YouTube guide to see if I can bring it back to life for this weekend.

This happened to mine about two months ago. Couldn't believe it. Unfortunately my G4 was given to me by a friend in Abu Dhabi (I live in Texas). They made me ship the bricked phone back to Abu Dhabi saying they could not replace it in the states. WTF.

Here is is two months later and I still don't have my phone back because apparently the post office in Abu Dhabi is incompetent and likely lost my phone on the return shipment. What a nightmare.

Lol. So I dropped my G4 in the toilet and its 99.9% dead barring some crazy luck and it dries out.

That's 2 dead from boot loop and one by water. Should've known since 4 is bad luck in Asian culture.

Gonna put in a order for a s7@ b&h soon. 580 isn't the worst 😂

4 sounds like the word "death" right? You'll have to wait until the LG G8. :p
