NYT: Republicans close to Trump say he's "exhausted, frustrated and bewildered"

It been obvious for a long time that his support was always a marginal group of "Republican" voters (remember for a long time he was getting like 30-35% of the primary vote while the rest of the party fucked up and kept like 10 people in the race splitting the rest of the vote). If was he remotely smart, he would have realized his fear-mongering populist schtick would never play to a broad base, especially in swing states. The early primary wins against a diluted field completely distorted everything and gave him this false idea of a mandate to push forward with his lunacy.

it's insane to me that he doesn't understand something as basic as how the challenges of winning a republican primary are entirely different to the challenges of winning a general election

his ego is ridiculous

He's too stupid to run for president. None of this is at all surprising. Apparently having a reality show doesn't prepare you for the rigors of a presidential campaign. Hillary, meanwhile, has been prepping for this for 30 years. It's like watching CM Punk fight Jon Jones.

Watch his rallies. Esp the one of the guy asking what his policies are. Its often heard that hes a good business man, and will figure it out. Thats all that qualifies him. And people are proud of it.

Someine even said "his anti healthcare plan!"

Given his ego, I can't imagine he'll handle losing well, especially when it's looking more and more like a blowout.

Hardest part about him dropping out (and I don't think his ego would allow it) is who would replace him? There is zero chance a replacement could mount a campaign this late and win. It might serve to help the GOP save their control of congress, but who on earth would basically be the sacrificial lamb to replace Trump, knowing they will lose?

I'd imagine Pence.

It's always funny to see his surrogates go on tv and excuse his behavior because of his lack of experience. You are running to be the President of the USA.

At what point is the GOP going to wake up? They can't do this crazy train bullshit in 2020 against an incumbent. But I'm actually worried that "normal" candidates might not be able to survive the primary process after we got a glimpse of The Trump Show. I could see another person like him do it again and trample over sensible picks.

Eh, I think Hilary is kind of proving now that a strong candidate can dismantle that kind of thing. She's wildly distrusted and disliked (mainly due to an unprecedented swear job by the right-wing), but she's a decent speaker, has the unity of the party behind her, and talks like she actually has confidence in herself and the stuff she says. One of the issues with the GOP primaries was the weak candidates. Like, the infamous penis debates is a good example. The fact that those guys all let Trump suck them into that nonsense shows that they were paper in the wind. Hell, you look at the final two. Ted Cruz was an average at best speaker, and could barely answer a question without on those long, what-do-I-say-now pauses. I think if the GOP had a better selection of candidates, the primaries would have looked much different.

45% was how much of the field Sanders got as well. Difference was, he wasn't facing a field of 10+ political jobbers.

I honestly think r/the_Donald is going to have a far bigger mental breakdown than trump himself

Loving this so much. Get trumped, republicans. Your hate and idiocy made this happen. Drink in that poison, long and deep. You earned it.

At the end of a fund-raiser on Long Island last week, he playfully buzzed the crowd twice with his helicopter.

I can't help but imagine Trump himself at the controls laughing maniacally while the crowd flees in terror.

Unsurprising. Modern american politics are very much a machine, and you win in it through careful calculation and allocation of resources. Trump is terrible at this, and its the thing Hillary is best at.

I'm now just treating Trump as a psychological study, pretty much answering the age old question of 'why can't any old person run for President?'

There's gonna be a breaking point though, surely. At some point, in some interview or debate he will surely snap and snap hard. Even by Trump standards he's been clearly getting more and more unhinged recently. Compare the Trump headlines from a few months ago, which were mainly him being xenophobic or sexist, to this week which is just crazy person talk.

He looks tired, folks. Doesn't he? He just looks very, very tired and let me tell you, I think he has given up. He's given up. It's very hard - this whole thing, doing this - it's very hard, believe me. And people are saying - I'm not saying it - but people are saying it's his age. It's probably because of his age.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I understand the comparison, but really think the constant calling up of Hitler, or any part of regime, is too flawed to hold any weight to what's going on now with Trump. Nothing that's happening now is comparable to Hitler outside the use of racial diversion in Trump's campaign, but I would even argue that is not directly comparable.

Trump is much more like Mussolini than Hitler.

If he's exhausted from a campaign how does he expect to feel if he becomes president? That job ages a person 10 years it seems, Trump's definitely not cut out for the job although thats been known for a while now.

Mr. Trump’s advisers believe he is nearly out of time to right his campaign. On Tuesday, hours before his explosive comment about “Second Amendment people” taking action if Mrs. Clinton is elected, his brain trust reassembled again at Trump Tower in a reprise of their stern meeting in June.

They again urged Mr. Trump to adjust his tone and comportment. The top pollster, Tony Fabrizio, gave an unvarnished assessment, warning that Mr. Trump’s numbers would only move in one direction, absent a major change.

Mr. Trump, people briefed on the meeting said, digested the advice and responded receptively.

It was time, he agreed, to get on track
.

Astonishing.

He wants out. He didn't think he'd make it this far. He's probably as surprised as anyone else who has a lick of sense.
