Actually, Lightning is "Aranea 2.0".

That design was revealed in the Versus XIII trailer from 2011. Way before the armored Lightning design ever saw the light of day.

I honestly think it's the lack of spiky hair that's throwing people off, rather than the face. I don't personally believe that the old Noct render is that far off of what a 40 something Noctis would look like facially. Just my opinion though at the end of the day.

Nah, to me it's the face. Hair can change all the time, but his face / bone structure looks completely different.

Also I'm not really seeing the Jon Snow comparisons with Older Noctis. Either way, I like his design and think it looks fine.

Yeah I think it's the in-game model that looks pretty terrible. Quite awkward looking. The render is better.
