Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

Well, I don't know if I should be saddened or impressed, but playing this beta has made me lose so much interest in TF2. I didn't think it was possible to fuck up the sequel given how outstanding the first game was, but there's just so much changed/removed from the first game that I enjoyed that I'm not feeling the hype anymore. I'll probably Redbox the game when it releases to see if anything in the full game can allay my fears, but as it stands now these are my issues with the game:

  • Removal of the AI Grunts in most modes
  • Titanfall is now based on points earned rather than a timer that you can burn down faster
  • Removal of Attrition (They aren't saying one way or the other, but the lack of grunts in Hardpoint and the addition of Bounty Hunt suggest it's gone)
  • The maps don't feel conducive to the parkour mechanics like the first game (The full game might prove me wrong)
  • Parkour speed has been slowed from the first game
  • Titan loadout customization is predetermined by frame
  • Titan shields are gone (Which also defeats the purpose of hitching a ride on a friendly titan since there is nothing to keep you from getting blown away)
  • Burn cards are gone
  • Wallhanging is a perk now
  • Can't hack Specters to do your bidding, although this is probably a consequence of the removal of AI in the other modes
  • I prefer the old rodeo system of trying to outfox the guy in the cockpit when he tries to remove you, rather than just having the whole thing automated and having to do it multiple times
That said, there are a few things I like. The grappling hook is a cool addition, although I wish it was available to all classes and didn't take up an equipment slot. Bounty Hunt is interesting, although I don't like that it seems to be in there at the expense of Attrition. I'm not sure how I feel about the merit system replacing XP for leveling, or moving to infinite grenades on a cooldown timer though. Hopefully I'll be able to catch the back end of the second test as I won't have more time to play until then, but as of right now my outlook on the game is pretty low, and that's really disappointing as this was the game I was looking forward to the most this year.

WTF?@?!?!?@?

Man after reading these impressions I am pretty disappointed with people's thoughts. I will give the game a go tonight but at this point I am expected to be let down.

It's titanfall, but broken. They've removed some key elements to the game and while it's still fun, it's noticeably less fun.

I do hope everyone is sending their feedback/criticisms/praise to them on titanfall forums

I don't know what they can do in two months. The game has changed. Even if they brought back Titan shields movement would still be different and the maps are there to support that difference.

What are those using the Xbox controller assigning to their paddles?

I'm using jump on the left and sprint on the right, but thinking about going to crouch on the right, because that slide is juicy.

I have slide on the right stick run on the left bumpers are jump and melee on my scuf. Classic aiming also feels much better.

Thats my thing also yeah. Both are just not good or the same as TF1. Killing abit what made Titanfall.

Wow... Just played my first match of Hard Point Domination.
Do not like!

I was the best player in the game, how many Titans did I spawn in the game?
1. Only 1 lousy Titan.

At the VERY end of the match, 2 seconds before we won.

What is this??? It was a very loooong game too and I only get 1 Titan at the end???

I don't mind the changes to parkour, the speed seems fine and I really like the grappling hook, but... The maps feel devoid of life without the AI and without 6 Titans running around at just about all times.

Whew... Glad I didn't preorder this.
Game went from preorder to nope real fast.

Can't say I've really enjoyed my time with this so far, it feels significantly different to me that it's off-putting. Don't like what they have done to the Titans, movement, game modes and the TTK seems faster? Pretty disappointed..

I enjoyed the timer for the Titan because, even if you weren't good, you got to join in on the fun.

But I'm saying this as someone who has no issue getting enough points to spawn a couple. Almost spawned a 3rd one today in one match.

Just feels weird to take that out because it makes it feel like everyone is doing their part in a match.

And the Titan shield change is weird... though I do like jacking a battery and plugging it into a friendly titan.

I'm not going to say I hate it, but the lack of Titans in a Titanfall game is sort of baffling. I think I've gotten 2 total so far.

I guess I never thought anyone would feel that the timer system was broken and needed fixed, I always liked the idea that Pilots were just hitting the battle first while their Titans were being prepared up above in orbit and you always knew you had that coming down the pipeline to maybe turn the tide. Just the chick giving you updates like "30 seconds to Titanfall" was one of the defining features if you ask me.

Now it feels like I have to be really amazing at an FPS game (which I'm not) to earn the right to use a Titan. It's turned the game into "IF I get my Titan" instead of "WHEN I get my Titan".

Played one match at lunch and did the training thing. It's definitely slower. I played the city map which people seem to think is the better of the two. It was small and awkward. Significant drop in quality from any single map from the first game. Makes me want to go play the first game instead.

So much this!
I miss the call outs about when your Titan would be ready...

And where are the damn grunts?
They made Titanfall feel alive...like a warzone.

This doesn't even feel like a skirmish.

I miss Spyglass updating me on my Titan's progress. That voice was awesome.

I'll reserve judgement until I get some hands-on time tonight, but there seems to be a worrying consensus growing around the game feeling slower, and a higher degree of difficulty in obtaining a Titan in comparison to TF1.

Oof.

Forget eject, it is straight ticket to death, just leave your Titan when you are doomed. Also picking up a battery when you are doomed won't return your Titan to normal state. Grapple Hook needs a nerf against Titans.

you can still stim eject and that will prevent you from getting goosed.

The amount of people who leave mid match is ridiculously high. I've yet to play a game with a full lobby for more than a few minutes. After that it ends up being extremely lopsided with one team being full and the other having between 1-3 players.
Yeah, people leave really quickly. Don't even bother with pilot v pilot, if the team starts losing quick expect everyone to bounce.

This franchise is so unremarkable.

lmao, and what remarkable franchise has come out this gen? Titanfall is still the best shooter on console, period. The original blows everything out of the water.

Despite some of the issues with this game it's still better than anything COD has released in the last few years.

Damm, not liking these impressions at all. :(

TF for me was a game once you got the click of it you would be wall running, jumping and blasting people all in swift, smooth fast movements. It's like you always had to be moving and thinking ahead.

Do we know how many maps will be in the main game at launch?

Next weeks map has a lot of weight on its shoulders.. if it's as bad as these two current ones..

No concrete numbers but from the people that played it (including me) it is not bad. Not 1080p but not a mess either, bet is on 900p. Runs pretty solid, some framedrops during heavy action but this is pre-alpha so expect that.

60fps on both

Thanks.

900p on PS4, lower on Xbox One

Would be very surprised if the X1 cant do 900p at least since the previous was some weird shit like 792 or if they didn't implement some kind of dynamic resolution. Is there confirmation on this?

Reading some of these impressions overall, I feel sad as TitanFall 1 was good shit. Can't believe they took out the AI grunts.

Im away from home dealing with the flood here in Louisiana, so I haven't played the game but everything I hear about TF2 is step in the opposite direction from what I would've liked.

Still haven't played the game yet, but these impressions are worrying. It would be one thing if these were simple changes (like decreasing the time it takes to call in a Titan), but there are other issues that are much more concerning, like map layout. I would imagine that Respawn would like to put their best foot forward with this initial demo, but if their map design isn't up to par with Titanfall 1 that's very worrying to me.

Not really digging it so far. Bounty Hunt is ridiculously boring and just not fun to play.

I also don't get why they lowered the TTK. It was already too quick on TF1 and now they lower it even more? I just don't understand it.

They need to change the name of the game from "Titanfall 2" to "Parkour Brawl" or something... Because there aren't any Titans dropping in during matches of Hard Point Domination... That's for sure...

This feels like some other company's take on the formula, not Respawn themselves.

couldn't have put it better myself.

just tried this out for an hour, this just isn't titanfall to me.

guess i'll just keep getting small fixes on PC when enough origin friends are on to fill a game.

what's kind of funny though, is that the whole "it's just CoD with mechs" bull**** that people were saying when TF1 released... now actually applies.

TF1 had the best, most fun core gameplay loop of any mp shooter this generation.

yup, 100% spot on.

i'll never forget how special you were TF1.

Downloading the beta now but I'm really not liking these changes. Doesn't matter if they'll be tweaking and announcing new things in the future, it looks like they completely missed the point about everything that made Titanfall so much fun to play (I'm one of those who bought it for $60 and regret nothing).

Gonna try the beta test soon but I'll most likely be cancelling my preorder. All Respawn had to do was improve upon what they had, not change every mechanic just for the hell of it.

TF2's maps definitely seem less wallrunnable than TF1's. While there are still many opportunities for parkour, they don't seem to have any lines that cover the vast majority of the map. I suppose it remains to be seen if Homestead and Boomtown are outliers amongst a suite of maps with more densely-packed walls and buildings. I also wonder if Respawn would consider adding some additional surfaces to create and expand parkour lines - in many cases, an extra surface here or there would be all it takes to enable an awesome route. Regardless, I hope the other maps are less Homestead and more Angel City.

I think I read somewhere that titan build times will be shortened? Good news if so. While I've called in three titans in several matches, the vast, vast majority of build points for them came from damaging enemy titans. As it stands, kills on AI and players are worth too little build meter.

Agreed with the sentiment that Bounty Hunt is a bit too rigid. AI drop zones and bank locations that differ from match to match on the same map would help fix this. I enjoy the mode as is, though the limited map selection in the tech test exposes how formulaic the mode can be. I'd also like to see time limits for each wave. Last night we were stuck on Homestead wave 1 for at least 10 minutes, as there was one single grunt that nobody managed to find and kill. Limiting waves to a certain period of time would help matches flow better.

I like the new titans a lot, even without shields. I feel like I have a ton of options with both Ion and Scorch, leading to some room for creative plays. Titans are somewhat squishy without regen shields, though by a certain point in the match there always seems to be batteries lying all over the place, so even by myself it's usually pretty easy to find one, hop out, and plug it in. Careful play and the use of batteries can lead to some significant titan lifespans.

Overall I'm loving the game. I'm finding the controls, gunplay, clean visuals, and audio to all be stellar. The game is nearly there, and a few refinements to mechanics and map designs could really take it over the top imo.

I've only played a handful of games and it's been awhile since I played TF1, but this does not feel like the Titanfall I remember. I'm having a tough time chaining all of the parkour elements and that momentum you built up in the original. It's weird. Like the building are just a bit too far apart. It also feels slower. Just really not having all that much fun.

I would imagine that Respawn would like to put their best foot forward with this initial demo, but if their map design isn't up to par with Titanfall 1 that's very worrying to me.

yeah, it is weird. i get that it's a tech test and they want to test out certain aspects of the game but they should be aware of the first impressions situation, especially from their most vocal and loyal fanbase.

if i were at Respawn i would have made sure there were two very different game modes on hand, with two very different maps offered.

  • a mode needed to be tested like bounty hunter

and then

  • a mode veterans could recognize like CTF

And i'd make sure there would be a traditional Titanfall map like Angel city there for CTF to be played on to show how the game really shines but that's just me.

Not liking these impressions and wondering how I'll feel when I play later. Sounds like disappointment. Is this why companies don't do pre-release playable versions of games much?
Oh well, maybe I'll enjoy it now that I don't have high expectations anymore.

Damn what a bummer.

Only got to play one match but so far this game is just not what I was hoping for. It isn't a bad game but it's not what I was hoping for. TTK is too low, wall running isn't nearly as prominent, and the Titans just aren't as much fun to fight against.

Gonna play it some more tonight to get a better impression.

Grappling hook is cool at least.

I can't tell you what the resolution is, but I played a few hours of Titanfall 1 last night and then Titanfall 2 today on Xbox and Titanfall 2 is VERY clean looking compared to Titanfall 1.

If it's not a higher resolution it's better AA or something.
It's graphically improved on XOne over the first game for sure...

maybe because they made it hard to have 6 Titans out at one time and cut all the AI soldiers out...

I really hope EA delays this game to early next year. This games feels like Call of Duty with much more bigger maps, which is not good for me since Call of Duty style games is better with smaller maps. I almost want to buy a 360 copy of Titanfall to experience Titanfall 1 since I still enjoy watching the videos of that game. My money is going to BF1 and likely Infinite Warfare. I hope the campaign is really good since that would make me buy it.

It's harder for me to comment on this when I'm so unused to TF on gamepad, but I think I can definitely understand some of the criticisms about the level design. Respawn had maybe the most consistent track record when it came to maps in TF1, but it feels like the current maps have lost some of the naturalistic sightlines that led to tons of smooth movement. For as "boxy" as the previous maps were they were at least in service of making transitions between wallrunning as smooth as people.

Really hope the final game isn't just a bunch of awkward-ass maps to run through.

While i like the removal of the AI, theres just so many things that are off in this alpha. They need to add more players everything feels so empty. I hope the devs really listen to these criticisms/feedback.

Gaaah, I feel like that really wouldn't contribute to removing some of those elements. I think they would sacrifice the resolution to keep those other elements if it was that. I think there might be other reasons they are not in there. Also, weren't all that AI stuff before being handle by Azure last time?

Good to hear it looks cleaner, but not liking the impressions I've been reading in this thread so far as I enjoyed TF1 on X1 and PC (yes I double dipped).

While i like the removal of the AI, theres just so many things that are off in this alpha. They need to add more players everything feels so empty.

See, the AI is what really made the maps feel alive and made it feel like you were more on a real battlefield.

Just finished up my third match and yep, still having a blast with this. I mean this is a pre alpha. I'm digging the gameplay and I put hundreds of hours into the first. Forgot how fun it is to drop in a Titan on an enemy titan and the grappling hook melee is fun to pull off. Also that sliding uppercut 👍

Titanfall 2 will have a home on the shelf next to battlefield 1 in my house come October.

Damn, thought this would be a sure thing. Did they get a lot of feedback that forced these changes. Seems strange that people are against them, why would they change it up like that unless feedback was strongly in favour. Hope there isn't some burn card loot gamble box announcement they are saving for later that gives you more Titans.

Kinda worrying just 2 months out, should they delay it to 2017?

Overwatch is.
