Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I kept reading complaints about TF2 compared to the first one. Can someone who DID NOT play TF1 give an opinion about the new chapter? Did you enjoy it? Thank you

It's fun but that being said it plays more like blops 3 instead of the videos I've seen of T1 which disappoints me because I really liked the look of T1 movement. That being said it's fun, it just plays slower than I'd like.

Also the maps are pretty meh. They really don't flow well.

Wait are you telling me they got rid of the AI ? One of the core staples of the first game to help get Titans quicker ? Fuck sake I knew the moaning bastards on the first game would fuck this up for the sequel.

The lack of AI soldiers makes the game look empty when compared to TF1. That was one of the features that made TF1 unique and losing it is a step back.

Seems like alot changed. I didnt see a countdown timer for titans either also no more burn cards. Loved Tf1 hope I'll feel the same about the new one. Don't like the new red and blue glow surrounding the players either. Shooting titans was much better than dropping grenades in them as a cut scene.

They're in Bounty Hunter, however it's only 5v5 and AI spawn in limited spots so it feels sort of empty.

We have not played Attrition yet which is the mode with a bunch of AI running around. The two modes in the test so far have had very few AI enemies.

How everything feels as far as movement and controls is good. The gunplay is extremely solid, some of the best I've played. The time to kill someone is ridiculously low. Guns have little recoil which is ok on its own but I dislike this coupled with the fact that it takes very few bullets to kill. I feel like I'm extremely exposed when wall running and grappling because death comes so quick. One map seems pretty good (Boomtown), the other one is extremely frustrating and far too open (I dont remember the name). I don't like bounty very much at all, haven't tried pilot vs pilot, and I like the capping of the flags one. Though it does seem to encourage camping over fast movement due to the fact that points can be double capped. In the wide open map it seems like it's a race for B and then camping in the trees once it's capped.

Overall the game is pretty fun if a bit frustrating. Sometimes the spawns are very bad. Like I'll spawn in and have no one around except 2-3 enemy titans and not a single teammate. Not sure how I feel about the charge to escape the enemy/kill all the enemies at the end of a match because I think I'll tire of it fast. I'll keep playing the test but I don't think I'll pick it up over battlefield come October.

Can't really comment on the movement because I'm still a novice at navigating the maps

This was unexpected

Cool. Gotta switch stim to grapple and try this next.

I made a short 2min Hardpoint mayhem vid just for fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwxXOx-w6jk
I tried to make full long montage, but sony vegas kept crashing so I gave up.

Would you guys be interested in Neogaf community Titanfall 2 montage? Like HaloGAFs Halo 5 montage, but for Titanfall. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=977642

This thread, combined with the PC beta fiasco, makes my interest in the game drop to almost zero. Please Respawn, don't fuck this up, I love TF1 :(

Played a few more matches and now I see what everyone is talking about in terms of the changes. It really does feel like a game that is less Titanfall and more CoD.

So Grapple adds a whole layer to traversal, and makes for some really fun engagements. But with that in mind, it feels like all the other equipment is sorely gimped in comparison. Pulse blade shouldn't alert the enemy, stim should last longer, and those are the only three I've used. But grapple has been hella fucking fun since I've gotten more of a handle on it, I just wish the regular traverse was up to R1's level.

Also. An elite controller takes the game to a whole new level.

The grappling hook is way too good. Being able to hook and double jump to launch yourself over objects is really fancy fun. It does utterly trivialize jacking a Titan. Quickly rip out the battery and then you can hook again to start planting grenades. Makes Titans feel way less imposing.

Hoping Respawn bring some interesting modes to the table because Bounty is pretty boring overall.

One thing that Respawn absolutely deserves props for is that hipfire is WAY more accurate in R2.

Also, at 22 minutes and thereafter I fell in love with the LSTAR: https://www.twitch.tv/didact2401/v/84400847

Also, probably my best recorded killing spree. I think it's 19 / 0, but the scoreboard doesn't show deaths (?).

For my own note:
00:49:50 has a pretty great noscope with the double take.
1:18:00 shows you can still kick people off the backs of titans with your foot ;).
1:50:45 whereupon I discover that holo is useful.
1:52:00 wherein myself and my hologram hold a point off from 4 enemies
2:46:30 the type of air battle I need to see more of
2:56:10 really impressed by spectre mini titans

Well, I don't know if I should be saddened or impressed, but playing this beta has made me lose so much interest in TF2. I didn't think it was possible to fuck up the sequel given how outstanding the first game was, but there's just so much changed/removed from the first game that I enjoyed that I'm not feeling the hype anymore. I'll probably Redbox the game when it releases to see if anything in the full game can allay my fears, but as it stands now these are my issues with the game:

  • Removal of the AI Grunts in most modes
  • Titanfall is now based on points earned rather than a timer that you can burn down faster
  • Removal of Attrition (They aren't saying one way or the other, but the lack of grunts in Hardpoint and the addition of Bounty Hunt suggest it's gone)
  • The maps don't feel conducive to the parkour mechanics like the first game (The full game might prove me wrong)
  • Parkour speed has been slowed from the first game
  • Titan loadout customization is predetermined by frame
  • Titan shields are gone (Which also defeats the purpose of hitching a ride on a friendly titan since there is nothing to keep you from getting blown away)
  • Burn cards are gone
  • Wallhanging is a perk now
  • Can't hack Specters to do your bidding, although this is probably a consequence of the removal of AI in the other modes
  • I prefer the old rodeo system of trying to outfox the guy in the cockpit when he tries to remove you, rather than just having the whole thing automated and having to do it multiple times
That said, there are a few things I like. The grappling hook is a cool addition, although I wish it was available to all classes and didn't take up an equipment slot. Bounty Hunt is interesting, although I don't like that it seems to be in there at the expense of Attrition. I'm not sure how I feel about the merit system replacing XP for leveling, or moving to infinite grenades on a cooldown timer though. Hopefully I'll be able to catch the back end of the second test as I won't have more time to play until then, but as of right now my outlook on the game is pretty low, and that's really disappointing as this was the game I was looking forward to the most this year.

This is the one thing I'm really glad to hear. I still maintain my stance that TF1 would've been much better without ADS, so while this isn't perfect, it's definitely a step in the right direction .

Bounty Mode is so unbalanced that it might as well not exist. If you are losing after the first "cash out", there's no point. Doubly so if the other team is just better and has titans on the field 5 minutes earlier than your team.
Unfortunately i think this will probably be the case for all game modes. Titanfall 1 had a timer for your titan and getting kills etc would take time off. This meant no matter how good everyone got multiple titans per game.

In this game there is no timer and its based off kills and objectives (?) only so bad players might never get a Titan and thus encourages them to camp for one likey they do killstreaks on cod. Which in a game called titanfall doesn't make sense.

#bringbackthetimer

They definitely need to bring back the timer. It helped even out games when you were getting wrecked.

I'm not sure why they even decided to go this route in the first place.

Yeah, this is the biggest turnoff for me right now. When the other team controls the match super hard you can't get anything going, and since the AI in Bounty are in hot spots full of action you can get killed really easily if you're just trying to farm some. This snowball effect applies gamewide now as well.

It's also made me sorta make my loadout based around it. I used to use the mag launcher a lot in TF1 for titans but in 2 I already feel like using the charge rifle over it just gives more versatility given some of the bigass sightlines, if I'm sniping at a Titan I'm able to decrease the timer on mine from afar instead of needing to be in an actual vantage point on the map. On that note I feel like I'm already dead when my titan is at critical health, something about the eject feels awful in 2. Like you are way easier to hit and will rarely ever actually get to escape.

I'm super confused on how I feel about this so far, which is surprising with how much I loved TF1(got to...5th or 6th prestige IIRC).

God this game is so fun. Definitely a day 1 buy for me on the ps4. Grappling hook is so addicting too and comes in handy a lot like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nikqdnOV6qo

Only issue i have right now is that it seems that Titans can't multitask? For some reason when reloading I can't drop the traps with the triangle button.
That sounds like another unrequired nerf to titans and I really don't know why they thought this was a good idea.

For the record I was very close to 10th gen without skips

I get why they did it. They needed something to aim for within games on an individual level to help keep people's interest. I've posted here before agreeing there needed to be something but I also said titans weren't that. It was obvious it would turn out like this so I'm not sure why they went for it.

Titans need to be accessible to all like in the first game not restricted to people who are good enough only.

As a general rule of thumb, everyone on your team, as long as they're playing a mode close to "correctly", should be getting at minimum at least one Titan in a match, and often more (depending). Where that doesn't happen, expect corrections in the real game.

Sadly, Amped Hardpoint (until weekend #2 most likely, when it was originally supposed to go live) will probably NOT be like that for weekend #1. Earn rates are very low, you'll feel a distinct lack of Titans until that's corrected, especially in the first half of a match.

Thank you guys!
Have this already preordered for PS4, i'll stick to it! I don't mind if it's not that fast paced...
If it's fun i'm in, you can do ridiculous "combo-kills" in this game, i like it!

The slowed movement hurt pilot combat, A LOT. It is super easy to goose people because of the slow and low eject, and it is a lot harder to to air strafe or eject stim (if it is possible at all).

Titan combat is a total mess. 1v2 is simply impossible no matter how good you are, hell even 1v1 Titan+1 pilot is a nightmare due to the lack of long range precision weapons to deal with pilots poking from afar.

All 3 modes are awful. Pilot v Pilot is shit, nuff said. Bounty Hunt is braindead and Amped Hardpoint is a campfest + snoozefest due to how empty the battlefield feels.

Yeah. Hype is dead.

Never been so disappointed in the fundamental changes in a sequel before.

Aside from maybe Invisable War, but even that sounded good on paper. (Aside from universal ammo)

Burn cards are still kind of there, Go to Customize > Armory > Boost.

"Wallhanging is a perk now"

The fuck? Who? Why?

Right??

Jesus Christ.

How did they fuck this up so bad?

Respawn/OG IW are one of my favorite devs, but holy shit. They had such a clear path to success with this game, and it's like they actively chose every wrong turn along the way.

I haven't played the first Titanfall, which means I'm basing the game (TF2) on a fresh perspective.

Thoughts:

  • UI and what X thing can do should be more clear. That "amp" your weapon thing should be in the Pilots' loadout screen rather than in Armory, I think.
  • I played a few rounds of the Bounty game mode and man, kinda confusing since you have to kill enemies and then deposit the money but only in certain time intervals? Maybe I'm just being stupid, but due to all the commotion (fucking giant robots, people and grunts shooting at you, etc.) it tends to get too chaotic that I keep forgetting to deposit the money.
  • What do you do once you grapple up to an enemy Titan? Press square? R2? Dunno know and when, but I know I threw a grenade on it but didn't know how.
  • Speaking of, what does Titan's X power thing do when pressed? I know you can check it in the menu, but you have L1, R2, triangle, down, etc. Super lots of buttons to press and when you're against two Titans and people, it gets a little confusing what to press for what.
  • Does the laser launcher auto lock? If it does, it doesn't feel like it. It's not like BF's stingers where you KNOW that the launcher is ready to be fired.
  • What are Networks and why should I care? I know it's like a social thing, but that should be more clear, no?

I'm nowhere near an FPS noob but some of the stuff was more confusing than Battlefield's (I know how people say Battlefield is so chaotic and you literally don't know what to do the first time you play it), which is saying something, right?

But I can see why EA thinks this is different from Battlefield 1 that it's releasing it within the same timeframe. It is different enough, but that doesn't mean it won't cannibalize sales.

Overall, liked it, will play more, and man, why on earth would you play a game mode where Titans aren't available? That's the game's whole freakin' point, right? I loved that part.

Man some of the changes ive been hearin have me extremely worried. Seems like they doubled down on the CoD elements of the game from what ive read(not necessarily a bad thing, just not why i enjoyed titanfal) will have to give itba try firsthand.

These matches are 15 minutes long in Bounty Hunt, one Titan isn't significant.
