Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I wonder if Respawn's Star Wars project is dividing Respawn's attention too much. Titanfall 2 just feels very 'B team'. A lot of changes for the sake of making changes, instead of improvements. Even down to the visual design.

It doesn't feel like a 'Call of Duty 4 -> Modern Warfare 2' sequel.

Titanfall 2 feels like it was designed by people who didn't like the first one.

The titans feel awful to play, calling in one takes to long on modes that aren't bounty, and the weapons on each titan feel slow. What a disappointment this game is so far.

Never played Titanfall but this was free so I figured why not.

I think the maps are really, REALLY bringing this down because the movement mechanics felt awesome in training but there's nowhere to apply them in this. It always feels like it's better to stay low to the ground/out of sight in this because the high damage and the extremely open areas discourage movement.

It's a shame, because there's been some awesome moments in this despite those things, but I think I'll skip this unless the full game has better maps.

OK, it is growing on me.

Titanfall for me personally set a very high bar. The OG beta was probably the best beta since Modern Warfare.

It captured everything about the game. And with Angel City, we were spoilt. The final game lived up to my expectations and I was so hyped for Titanfall 2.

So this tech test, well. It took some getting used to. So many mechanics in the game switched up. I didn't like the changes.

After playing some more though, it is really growing on me. A lot actually.

Respawn took a risk changing the game up like this, but they took it. And the feedback, in the main, has been negative.

But stick with it. If you accept this is not a Titanfall map pack with extra perks, something I thought I wanted, you may get some enjoyment out of it.

And traversing the 'big' map without touching the floor is sweet. All you need is a handy grapple.

Well....it kinda does to me in that they've fucked up a sequel to an amazing first game (or in CODs case, first Modern Warfare game)

So I've finally spent some quality time with this. I agree with a lot of what was said here, but it's not the train wreck I'd thought it would be.

Issues to me are:
No more timed titans
Slowed down gameplay
Map design
Mode selection

If their are better maps in the final game along with more of the standard modes (primary attrition) it could be good. I like some of the changes, like the burn card replacements and the grappling hook.

Here's for hoping that they address the issues before it launches. As is, the tech test is a pretty big step back from Titanfall one.

For reference, I have over 130 hours in the first game on X1.

I am not sure what to say. The game moved from my most wanted game if all time to ...eh... Ill buy it once ts out. Something is off here. I like how the shooting remains the same and not laggy or bullet sponges not sure what its called in the recent cod games.

But the titans are slower and i dont like that. Even the robe thing i felt its very slow. Wish they make it faster

At this point I feel like they should push this game to march and polish it some more. Take some of the feedback to make adjustments and make this a worthy experience to insure titanfall continues as a franchise.

Wrapping up gen 10 titanfall 1

This! I've just finished a good 3 hour session there and after about an hour I realised that the grapple is much more effective when I use it to "stick a landing" so to speak. I use the grapple on the big map to hit the debris walls and keep my speed up and it feels awesome to go across the map and never touch the ground.

Respawn have taken a gamble and to be honest I'm really enjoying it! Sure its rough around the edges and there are a lot of tweaks to be made but for a pre-alpha test build it's really quite impressive!

Don't know if it'll displace another game I want to buy this year, but it could do just that!

Ha, I guess so. But it was like Call of Duty 4 on steroids. Titanfall 2 feels like they went back to the drawing board on a lot of elements.

Well yeah I guess that's true as well. It is funny when I didn't like MW2 due to how crazy and amped up it got whilst I dislike Titanfall 2 (beta only) due to them dialling it back compared to the first game.

Amped Hardpoint is like what. The incentive for sitting on a point in a Domination-style mode should be the ability to defend that point, not having to be glued to it in order to win faster. Baffling fucking game mode. I sat on our point all game, getting no kills, and finished 3rd on our team. Respawn pls

Finally was able to try out the demo. First thing that stood out to me was the UI. The HUGE letters were really off-putting, I thought. I played half a match on some outdoor field that didn't take advantage of the movement mechanics at all. It is literally an open field.

EDIT: And unless I missed it, I was a little annoyed how the training doesn't introduce you to Titans nor the grappling mechanic.

I hope Respawn and EA hear all this criticism and rethink their plans. Maybe it needs to be delayed to get it right. There is some precedent for delaying a big EA shooter with BF Hardline.

Titanfall had the best most consistent collection of maps on any game Ive played. Including the DLC.

They were excellent and not one did I think 'oh no, not this map!'

I have complete faith Respawn will deliver on maps.

I am warming up to the beta maps now also. Starting to find some paths I can take with the grappling hook. It is possible to get pretty far across the maps in a short space of time.

Aye we heard you like going fast so we made a game mode where the objective is to stay still.

The fundamental problem is that you shouldn't have to rely on the grappling hook to be able to traverse. It should enhance movement, not be the only way to do it effectively when there are multiple other classes that don't get such an essential benefit in a game all about movement.

This can't be the same design team that made titanfall 1s maps. Cause I can't think of any map in titanfall I hated. Training grounds was weak but way better than these maps. They just feel so flat with no verticality.

That I do sort of agree with. It feels like the Grapple should just be a standard piece of equipment that all Pilots have.

I barely see anyone using anything else.

Definitely. The hook feels really good to use, but it's like nerfing everything that was fun about T1 to justify it being there. I want to be able to use the other classes but that hook is just too needed to have fun.

I've tried a few games of the test so far and my feelings are pretty mixed, perhaps edging towards slightly negative so far.

The maps on offer really do not accommodate the sort of game I thought Titanfall 2 was meant to be. Large, wide open spaces (one map is essentially a field) seem to discourage you taking any advantage of the movement system - instead you just end up with campers along the edge that you can't outmaneuver to dislocate.

The issue of huge empty maps is made worse by the removal of bots from most game modes. This blows the mind, what were they thinking when they made that decision? So much of the atmosphere and the drama in the original game was as a result of the dialogue and the fights that these little guys would get into. It's extremely disappointing.

The TTK is also too low and should probably be raised a little bit higher as well. What's the point in showing enemy health bars when everyone dies in about three-four bullets anyway?

I don't want to be a complete Debbie Downer, so I will say that the shooting feels like a big improvement over the original. I like the new "recharge" of Grenades and abilities. The new Titans seem pretty cool. I'm aware there's still a little opportunity for change between now and release and my mind may change after a bit more time with the game, but I feel like they may have taken the wrong ideas with this one, and that's a shame.

Makes no sense. Incentivizes camping like crazy. And the removal of AI on top of the longer wait until you get a Titan.... (?_?)

Why is this game trying to be everything for everyone? Movement, AI and Titans should be a vital part of all the modes.

I'm hoping either the maps get changed between now and launch to better facilitate wallrunning, or that Respawn somehow chose the two worst maps to make an impression with. Really don't want this to be another MW2 for me (fuckin' hated the maps in that game after MW1's godlike selection).

Anyone have any luck with the Mastiff shotgun? Unlocked with it currency since the level cap isn't high enough. It seems to be a two-hit kill even at a close range, so going for headshots are essential. On the other hand, it's range and spread are pretty ridiculous. Idk how to evaluate it.

I'm not liking what I have played at all. Titanfall felt unique. These current modes in the beta are whack. Titans rarely pop up. Didn't know I was getting pilot fall.

It definitely looked like it has some really nice range to it going off that Tech Test trailer. I'm eager to get my hands on it, but the climb to 500 credits is taking a while. Wish I didn't spend so much on attachments early on.

Eh. I like using the radar detector.

If camo and stim are useful, then itd be nice variety.

Im not missing the hook. But what sucks is the map design. Im barely doing anything but double jumping onto rooftops

Making the hook universal would also greatly hurt titans since u can easily hook onto them

What happened to all the Titan action and chaos from the first game? Most of the matches I've played so far even up with only one or two titans on each side the whole match. Bring back the Titan timer also. There's a lot of play on the ground, but their aren't any wall running designs in either of the maps. As a huge Titanfall fan I'm a little disappointed. I didn't have a problem with EA releasing both BF1 and TF2 so close together, but now I wouldn't be mad if they delayed it...

Oh yea the TTK is ridiculous...

Haha this is fairly accurate.

so is this how a titan falls? (again)

Completely agree, I'm super unimpressed with how this plays. Why they changed so much from T1 is beyond me. There was nothing wrong with it. T2 should have been that plus more, not taking way from it.

So I don't know what to think of this game. I kinda like the on foot stuff, even if juggle between slide and jump to keep up speed feels like a hassle. But I hate the Titans and what they do to the game. Any game modes Sans Titans?
