I feel like this could go either way. Sony invested a ton of money into Gaikai in order to get PS3 games playable via PSNow. If you had asked this question a year or two ago, I would say that there was no chance in the world of them making PS3 games playable outside of this.

However, with PSNow spreading to more and more platforms (PC, TV, Blu Ray players) I think formal PS3 emulation on PS4 could be a good move for them. If nothing else it would certainly keep the "hardcore" gaming fans happy and more likely to stay with Playstation. I think a move like this would depend on how successful PSNow is via the other platforms I mentioned above.

You don't understand. It's not that Sony doesn't want to, Sony doesn't know how. To emulate hardware properly traditionally require a system two gens newer. Short of putting a PS3 chip insider PS4 there is no way to do this.

For people saying $199 - how can that happen? I would LOVE to see it but it just doesn't make sense. They currently have a cod bundle for $350 - how does a new slim model appear for $199 just like that?

You know - they had that 12GB version of the PS3 that was cheaper - they could've done something like that (while stripping optical out), no bluray drive (digital only) and making a smaller (250gb maybe) HDD but it's clearly 500GBs WITH a blu ray drive. $199 isn't happening. I think they will bundle something for the US for $299. What has been unboxed is for the Mideast/Europe so maybe that's why it's not bundled with anything? Not sure what's available to them.

I'd love to see an unbundled slim for $249 but lower than that? Unlikely.

There's a difference between Sony "not knowing how" and it being impossible to accomplish. Microsoft found a way to make the Xbox One emulate 360 games, so it's certainly possible given the time, talent and money. Whether or not Sony would be willing to invest any of those resources in another story. I certainly didn't imply that they would.

The fact that you use XB360 shows that you have no idea why it is impossible. The Cell of PS3 is not just marketing talk, it is literally a different system. A system that was incompatible with PS2 before and PS4 after it. XBOXOne is just a more powerful XBOX360. PS4 has nothing in common with PS3. PS3 is the last of the attempts to make a customised console that isn't just a PC in a closed box.

Sony DID invest money to get PS3 games to work in PSNow. They built tiny PS3 chips. They didn't emulated because it is crazy to do it. PS3 was expensive at launch because it IS an insanely powerful machine. It's just that it was so alien that it was hard to make games for it. And since it is so powerful, you can't emulate it with today's tech.

Here's how Xbox One emulates the Xbox 360.

Um, what? 360 used PowerPC CPU arch, and while not as exotic as Cell, certainly could not be described as a "more powerful 360".

Only Two more weeks to go.

Lol!! Man that was awesome! Loved the classic Total Recall
Edit:

Thanks everyone! A friend made this. For GAF! Pretty cool.

When it comes to FFXV i am not asking much .
Full 1080p , better AA and a more constant 30fps and i happy .
Don't think i will play it until i get a Neo so i hope Sony make a fair amount.

EDIT also awesome gif lol .

Has any one done a teardown of the PS4 Slim? What if the leaked console was the PS4 Neo? I don't believe this but can we be sure this isn't PS Neo?

Yes, we are sure it's not the Neo, because the dude didn't just get the system, he got the retail store box which, if it was Neo, would definitely mention about it being different or enhanced from a regular ps4, but it doesn't.

I just wonder what is the lowest price for the ps4 slim version available now... from there you can guess what is the retail price.

That's not a Mac ;)
^^^ Steve's greatest and most effective use of the RDF right here, folks.

… while this is how MS use theirs. ^^^

A virtual machine that needs to be hand-tuned for every single piece of software you throw at it isn't much of an "emulator."

And the problem with PS3 emulation isn't translating the SPE commands in to "something else," it's finding "something else" to execute them as fast as the Cell could. Such hardware still doesn't exist. That's why PS Now is powered by racks of PS3s instead of typical server hardware.

I just want Shawn Layden to come up stage and say that we are living in some kind of matrix and in fact, we are the ones to save the world.
