Fantastic episode, and very emotional. As said by others, Connie being the red herring for Steven's thoughts was a great idea and executed very well.

Also, I'm expecting a brand new batch of Nintendo x SU fanarts in the future. I mean,
Stevonnie floats exactly like Yoshi

Re: animation discussion earlier

SU normally has good animation

the problem is that it commonly goes off model and thus sometimes it looks odd

I think that might just be my favorite episode of the new season and one of my favorites of the entire series.

Here comes a thought was soooo good.

Saw the episode. Yup, it's a new Top 5 episode, maybe even higher based on how masterful it was.

Is there any way that Cartoon Network can buy out Trigger or at least Takafumi Hori's contract so he can work on the show full-time? Because holy shit. And the animation was just one of the incredible things about this episode.

This is an early contender for their 2017 Emmy submission.
Get ready to get your cry on. And prepare for chills for pretty much the entirety of Here Comes a Thought.

After seeing so many people discuss the episode, I will have very high expectations when I watch it. Think I'll just wait for the airing since it will be close to air time once I am actually home.

It'll be worth it. My review of the episode in the only way I know how to describe it, Puppets:

It's ok, it's ok, it's ok...

Mindful Education

Steven's breakdown was so beautifully executed particularly when I was thinking he was just being a bit of a tag-along for the first couple minutes of the episode, just echoing that "everything's going to be fine". First episode of the show where I cried, and I usually don't cry on TV, just fantastic stuff.

It's also rare that you see Steven full-on crying and sobbing like that. The only other time when that happened was at the end of Bubbled and you didn't even hear him because Love Like You was playing. Steven's usually the rock that supports and helps other people with their problems. That's why it's so rough to see him breaking down about how he couldn't help everyone.

Also,
it's funny how I thought Deedee Magno Hall singing It's Over sounded better than Estelle singing Stronger Than You. Then Estelle absolutely killed Here Comes a Thought and reminded me how utterly gorgeous her singing is. AJ Michalka was excellent too during the Stevonnie part.

Welp, looks like all those theories were wrong.

when the butterfly swarm turned into Rose, that was a huge "OH SHIT!" moment.

Loved the ep.

Gosh, what a gorgeous episode. The art and animation were lovely.
Also, I can't help but feel the musical segments have been an incredibly strong part of the show as of late.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed this! Had me smiling hard when it happened.

I thought it was good.
only quibbles I had was that garnet and stevonnie didn't seem to harmonize well in their song, also I felt that Connie comforting Steven was a little weird since the shit Steven went through is dramatically worse than anything a normal kid has to deal with. Seriously that's full on PTSD inducing stuff.

I'll be fine with it if this becomes an ongoing issue with Steven though, and this isnt the end to his flashbacks.

Look at it this way
This wasn't about comforting steven, it was about stability and focus, it's what Garnet taught them, Connie wasn't helping him get over it, she was helping him focus so he can deal with it better and, you know, so they wouldn't die.

Watched it live with extremely little spoilers. Great job to the crewniverse and their amazing guest Animator. Probably will watch this two more times to take it all in.

Very emotional and important message for all ages to understand. And wow that end both intense, cathartic and beautiful

Yeah, plus
there's the fact that his way of dealing with these tings was wrong. He was surprising it, trying to not think about it. But you can't move pass things fully if you're not able to face them ... to even think about them.

I feel like Connie's conflict at school is hinting that Steven's gonna take steps to fixing these problems instead of trying to act like nothings wrong. Jasperdemption train a-chugging

Also, in the context of Stevonnie, it's important that they be able to do this seeing as she's a fusion built from their relationship. Bottling shit up in a relationship isn't healthy

Man, I thought the episode couldn't get better than
that song sequence
.

But then came the scene of
Steven falling, curled up and sobbing, his tears streaming into the sky... dang. Just... dang
.

I think this needed to be two episodes.

Everything was absolutely amazing about this episode. I think the last big, with the final piece of training, and the falling, deserved its own episode. Steven's problems felt tacked on, and not really explored enough for a single episode. Ending on Steven seeing that butterfly would have been perfect for me.

But man, that song...

This was a really powerful ep, the Crewniverse outdid themselves with this one. The entire "Here Comes a Thought" sequence is breathtaking.

Hope there's more Crewniverse/Trigger collabs in the future, the animation in this ep was on point.

Is it too late to link the 3rd promo pic?

Tonight at 7 PM! @jeffliujeffliu and I did boards! @porigoshi did incredible guest animation! Such an honor to be a part of this one, a lot of my cartoon dreams came true!

I'm just a Pearl
Yes, I'm only a Pearl
And I'm sitting here so far from Homeworld...

After reading the AV club review, I kind of agree on her point about the show's last few minutes.

Steven's problems came about a little too quickly. If they had built up to it a little more, the impact might have been less random.

Also, this might sound really nitpicky, but sometimes the show can be a little too on the nose with its dialogue. It was all very relevant, but it just took me out of the moment for a bit.

Still a really good episode, although upon rewatching I'm not as crazy about it as I was when I first watched it.

"I didn't want to hurt anyone! I'm sorry! None of them would let me help them, I had no choice!"

Ok, my English/English Education Masters degree senses have been triggered and I've just typed up this big Season 3 analysis. MC BearBear with me.

A running theme of Season 3 was Steven learning that he could be unable to change or help people. The season started and he encountered humans who were practically irredeemable in Marty and Kevin. He didn't do anything for Marty. But he tried to get back at Kevin and only succeeded when he learned to let his hate go. He'd succeed in helping people like Fryman, Kofi, and Kiki, and he was even able to help Greg and Pearl start fixing their relationship. But he tried to help an asshole like Lars and it mostly blew up in his face. He crossed into some uncomfortable territory there....but he was slightly vindicated when Lars seemed to make a nicer effort towards Sadie. Steven learned a bit of a lesson, but it wasn't that he shouldn't interfere. So he kept going, and the stakes began to escalate into the world of the Gems. He tries to help Centipeetle, he fails in fully healing her, but he does help her find peace and happiness by finding her crew. Right after that, Jasper reappears, things go to hell with Amethyst, but Steven is able to help her mostly.

Everything seemed ok...until Bismuth. He's forced to poof her after he can't convince her he isn't Rose, she refuses to listen to his non-lethal message, and as she's about to kill him. It messes him up big time, but he makes a desperate and earnest promise to tell the Gems about her. Bismuth seems to appreciate it in her final moments. Not everything is lost. But things somehow continue to escalate.

In Beta, we see the very successful results of two people Steven had helped: Lapis and Peridot. They're close friends, they live together, and they finally seem to be enjoying life. But there's a reason we're given Lapis and Peridot's happy life at the barn right in the beginning, and we see it in Earthlings. Steven reaches an deeper emotional closeness with Amethyst and helps her overcome her inferiority and frustration by fusing into Smoky. Everything seems wonderful! Except their celebration ends when they see Jasper is corrupting. Steven goes to help save her...and she utterly refuses and lashes out at him. Even in her lowest moment, she refuses to be helped by "Rose" and she's goes fully into corruption when "Rose" doesn't even remember how she ruined Jasper's life and killed Pink Diamond. Steven even indirectly causes this by thinking Jasper's Diamond is Yellow Diamond.

The first half of Earthlings is a triumph for Steven, but after the fight, it's a massive failure. It's a stark contrast to Beta; Steven tried to help Jasper like he helped Lapis and Peridot. He thought everything would be OK, but Jasper refused.

He learns that his perfect mom killed Pink Diamond in the next episode, putting more doubt in his head about Rose. Then we get to the biggest gut punch and the season finale with Bubbled. Steven and Eyeball are trapped in space together. Eyeball seems mostly harmless like the other Rubies. He and Eyeball begin talking, and she gets her gem cracked by an asteroid. She's on the verge of dying or losing herself. Here, Steven actually does heal her. He saves her life! Eyeball finally believes he's Rose Quartz!

And she responds by trying to kill him.

She wants to rip out his gem with a knife and be hailed as a war hero. Keep in mind of how different this is from Jasper. Steven didn't get a chance to save Jasper at all. He might have been able to save and cure her if he healed her, but she refused. But her attack on Steven is one done in anger and one that doesn't even cut him. As she's corrupting, she's having an emotional breakdown and yelling at Steven. But she isn't trying to kill him. Obviously it's because she's turning into a monster, but she could have tried to attack him again. She doesn't go to attack them until she's completely lost her mind and become a monster.

But unlike Jasper, Steven DID help Eyeball. She WAS healed. Steven literally saved her life. She's fully capable of rational thought. But she still tries to kill him.

In order to save himself, he's forced to throw her into space. Steven poofed Bismuth almost by accident when he instinctively stabbed her to defend himself. But Bismuth was just poofed. She did seem to hear him at the very end. There's still hope. He didn't poof Eyeball though. He doomed her to float in space for an eternity. If she's lucky, she'll be taken out of her misery by another asteroid or space rock. Maybe she gets picked up by aliens? Or even Homeworld? But the chances are slim. She's probably going to float in space for the rest of her existence.

Steven becomes emotionally exhausted. He just curls up into a ball, his bubble shrink and he either sleeps or waits for death. When the Gems pick him up, he laughs like he always does, but then he just starts sobbing. He's never done that on the show, and it's a huge moment. He's always been the one helping Garnet, Amythest, and Pearl with their problems, but now they see their little boy crying. So they just cry together in a big group hug. Steven comes terms with what his mom did to Pink Diamond, now that he went through his own situation where he was forced to do something that probably killed someone.

But he still doesn't come to terms with what he's done to Jasper, Bismuth, and Eyeball.

And that comes to a head this episode. His emotions and thoughts can't contain themselves anymore and they cause a life or death situation when Stevonnie falls off the arena. He needs someone to help him accept and recognize these bad feelings, and Connie is there for him. Stevonnie, the embodiment of their relationship, ends the episode by saying "I'm here." She is there for Steven. Steven is there for her. Steven will be able to get through this with the love of his friends and family.

Last season was about Steven going through bad times. But like Connie said, you can't fix problems and negative thoughts by keeping them hidden, ignoring them, or feeling bad about them. But you can fix them by confronting them and DOING something about it.

This episode is the beginning. Steven's going to try and make things right this season.

I mean, unless Yellow Diamond or other bad shit shows up instead. The ride never ends!

Tl;dr typing this on an iPad touch keyboard took a long time.

Those last couple of minutes in this episode were damn good.

As others have noted, the songs have been god-tier lately. Everyone's knocking it out of the park.
