I see I'm the minoity who doesn't like "here comes a thought" and "it's over isn't it". Connies dialouge later however covered the message of a "here comes a thought" in a way that resonated a lot more with me.

For me "both of you" is the best song to come from the most recent episodes.

"Both of You" just barely edges out "It's Over Isn't It" for my favorite song from Mr. Greg, and definitely sits high up on my list of favorite/most impactful songs in the series.

But seriously, I can't give Deedee Mango Hall enough props for that performance.

Edit: Holy hell, Garnet's line was a callback, haha

Edit 2: just gonna put more songs I like here as I listen to most of them again
This little ditty from Cry for Help is nice
I've been returning to Peace and Love quite a bit lately

Garnet has the best singer
Pearl has the best Voice actress

I think it just depends on what people are into. I mean, I like Estelle, but her music never felt as good as Deedee's songs are. They're both insanely talented with musical backgrounds, so it's kind of neck and neck.

I'm really happy this episode came out, the rips on youtube of the con were like a 10th of the quality and emotional impact compared to hearing it in person and through the episode.

I have OCD...and yeah. It hit me hard.

Really good episode.

Ditto. I need a high quality rip of this for when compulsions happen.

Caught up to ep 3 of season 4
The sardonyx show was quite funny and the reaction to smoky quartz was funnier than i thought itd be

I loooooove Estelle's music as a singer outside of SU, but she has a lot of trouble staying in tune, especially for the songs Garnet gets on the show. Here Comes A Thought really showcased this issue, which wasn't helped by the song being written a bit too high for her voice. It's a shame, the back half of the song is gorgeous, but Garnet's part isn't very flattering for Estelle's voice.

I think that's a fair criticism. It would be hard for a singer to sing in a way that doesn't break character. Estelle singing is distinctly different from Estelle playing as Garnet singing.

I can definitely see the complaints against Garnet's part of Here Comes A Thought but I actually like how she sings it. It sounds a lot more like a lullaby Ruby and Sapphire would sing to each other, something they sing to calm the other down. It was humble and sweet and innocent. In a way, it not suiting her vocal range exactly helped to strengthen the message of the song. I thought anyway.

In the SDCC panel, Rebecca said she wrote Here Comes a Thought while she was going through a really dark period and had to "talk herself down from a ledge". Hearing it in the context of this episode was really touching.
What the fuck?

I had a hunch this episode was gonna be a great one, but when Heres a Thought started playing I absolutely lost it. Such a great episode, which also addressed quite a few plot points that haven't been bought up before in the series (Stevens having the guilt of not being able to save everyone, how he didn't mean to do what he had to Ruby, how he can't help everyone and dealing with it) with such a fantastic song. I almost teared up when it was playing.

It's probably one of my favorite Steven Universe episodes out of the whole series.

Yeah I agree. It had so much more of an impact (not that it's not a great song in its own right though) for me when I heard it in the episode.
I totally thought of Yoshis flutter kick when I saw Stevonnie do that. It fits perfectly.

Did it fuck with anyone else when Steven saw a butterfly on Rose's sword after the song? I almost thought it was going to be some Inception-type moment where they were still fused, or something.

This was an excellent episode, the Stevonnie fusion sequence was spectacular and the song was really good. I also like how it showed Steven isn't always right with the advice he gives.

Someone on /co/ pointed out that the area Stevonnie floats down to in the end was the same place Ruby and Sapphire landed in some 6000 years prior:

Which would make the ruined sky arena the same place as Blue Diamond's court, yes?

Yes. I thought it was plainly obvious then but it's good to have it further confirmed. In The Answer it was called the "Cloud Arena".

EDIT: leaker-san has found some new things on CN's servers, not surprising since we're just now coming into September:

to be honest the lyrics in here comes a thought bothered me. The constant "it's ok" and "i'm here" seemed very simplistic in its lyrics. And the rhythm just doesn't get to me.

As to 'it's over isn't it' I was just thinking the whole time that it's been over for like at least 10 fucking years you should have realized it by now.

Mindful Education really was really awesome; there was a lot to love about it.

From the holo-pearls doing the robot ("Come at me, children!"), to Steven's intense regretful visions of the gems he couldn't reason with or save.
It was all just so well done.
Also, I thought "Here Comes A Thought" was absolutely brilliant; it's probably one of the most relatable songs to come out of the show, you really don't have to have a lot of context to understand it's meaning and it sounds amazing.

Plus the animation in the sequence was absolutely fantastic, the guest animator killed it.

Yo, we need more guest animators; I want a Glen Keane or Andreas Deja animated sequence in SU.

I get the feeling they make it a point to keep songs simplistic for their intended audience.

And to a being that has lived for over six thousand years, 10 years might as well be 10 minutes.

it doesn't mean she couldn't have realized by now with Steven in her life that it's over, that she chose someone else, and that she isn't coming back because physically it makes no sense.

I think it's more that she's asking herself that; she already knows before the song starts, but she's wondering why she can't accept it and move on

She also didn't have to perform that whole number in his room while he was sleeping. The show can sometimes go a little too far in its artistic choices.

Speaking of pearl, did anyone else feel like the sequence between Ruby and Sapphire this episode was a representation of the whole Sardonyx debacle? The way Ruby was stuck on that one butterfly reminded me of how she was the one who refused to deal with it calmly.

I like how Estelle is the only actual recording artist that's a main character but she literally has only two songs in the whole show and BOTH of them are so fantastic. Like they can be legitimate singles without context to Steven Universe.

Deedee Magno is also a professional singer, though her group arguably never had quite the same level of exposure that Estelle has.

Wow, totally did not know that, any links to her stuff?

She was (is?) a singer for a group called "The Party". This is after her stint in The New Mickey Mouse Club.

Here's an examples from the early 90s (and believe me, it shows): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9bgKLJs3XM

They reunited a few years ago, but I can't find any links to that stuff on a cursory search.

EDIT: She also did a bunch of musical theatre/Broadway.

Hah...and as a bonus, here's a compilation including her in some old Mickey Mouse Club stuff - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccnmDRvlQDg

God damn that was 90's af. Well I guess that's explains her wonderful voice technique.

To those saying that they think this should be two episodes and that shouldn't deal with Steven's problems so quickly; there is no way that was the 'resolve' of Steven's problems, just the introduction for us a the audience to realize all of these people Steven has gotten in tragic conflicts with? They're taking a toll on him.

Plus the credits music this season is a big red herring. Episodes 1-3 of Season 4 had notably no credit music, just wind sounds. Then this episode had this creepy tune playing during the credits.

I have this was only the beginning of Steven's issues he's amassed over the series. I was actually thinking to myself around the time that Alone at Sea aired, and most certainly afterward, that Steven keeps on helping everyone and he loves to help, but he rarely ever needs help. He's mature and has grown up a lot since the series started, but he's recently been dealing and taking things in he doesn't know how to process and it's a lot to take on with his good-nature, on-top of everything he's taken on for other people. I do think there's a lot more this is going to spring, and it seems like the reason Season 4 started with such light-hearted episodes might be because we're going into some very dark territory, and the way they're handling the credits are definitely pointing to something worse brewing.

---

On a completely unrelated note, I've been so spoiled by Steven Universe recently, it's going to be hard to accept a hiatus might be a few weeks away. But in fairness, we did at least get 27-28 (depending if you count Bismoth's episode as one or two episodes) in a row, we literally got almost a fourth of the entire aired series right now within a two month period. They need to eventually break, but it will be sad to go for a few months again with no new episodes, especially as the show has been so good lately. But least we are being left with a lot to talk about.

And it kind of lines up with Pearl's character (I'm remembering the return to the moon base episode).

It's really cool how a lot of the voice actors seem to have the same personalities as their characters, or at least hints of them.

Previously Toonzone forums claimed Gem Harvest would be the episode airing September 8th. Now they're saying that the September 15th airing will be comprised of both previously-known titles Tiger Philanthropist and Last One Out of Beach City:

Not sure how reliable this is. What a perfect episode to end on a hiatus though, right? Ha ha...

Future Boy Zoltron might be a funny episode that ends with Garnet having a really, really bad premonition through future vision, which leads us into Gem Harvest. Last One Out of Beach City sounds super ominous, and it's the title that I thought would be the season finale. If it's an episode with high stakes, then it makes sense to end this run of episodes on it.

The only question is why is Tiger Philanthropist in between them? I'm more than ready for another wrestling episode (especially since I know people on the staff like Matt Burnnett are big fans). But it's placement between the other two episodes means it will either be more serious than expected, or Gem Harvest and Last One Out of Beach City are red herring titles like Hit the Diamond was. Watch Gem Harvest be an episode about farming.

Tiger Philanthropist I am almost wondering if it's related to a real world oddity of good-will that happened in Japan a few years ago. When I saw the episode title I immediately recalled a story from the early 2010s about a 'Masked Philanthropist' who wore a tiger mask. On Christmas in 2010 he left yen in front of an orphanage and backpacks for the kids with supplies, and in the bags was a card signed by Naoto Date, who was the secret identity of a character named Tiger Mask who was a wrestler in a 1960s manga by the same name. and the following with the same card was done on New Years in 2012 for an orphanage. It didn't happen again after that, but it inspired people to start doing similar things for those in need in Japan, anonymous gifts with many being signed by Tiger Mask, aka the Masked Philanthropist.

I'm wondering if this is just one big coincidence, or if the episode title/whatever it's about is inspired by this?

Ha, never realized how deceitful Hit the Diamond as a title could be.

We've gotten a shit ton of new episodes lately, a hiatus is fine in this case. It's the drip-feeding of episodes leading into seemingly endless programming wastelands thats bad. They need time to set up the next bomb. Scorched earth if we're lucky.
