I don't either but will feel enormous pressure to buy one after I get it, lol. I'm ready to move to 4K, 1080 feels blurry to me now.

A 4k tv is what my tax return early next year is going to, which is fine because I was playing ps4 on a 720 p television for like two months before I got my first 1080p tv.

i sold my PS4 as soon as neo rumblings started. I hope its $549AU like the original PS4 was on launch and no more. I also hope it doesnt use that god awful CPU. Has there been any more information on this?

Would be extremely disappointing.

I would say with 99% certainty it's going to be an upclocked Jaguar CPU...maybe, just maybe Puma (IIRC, that's the ever so slightly better version of the Jag cores right?)...

But it certainly won't use Zen cores...

Good to hear! I dont have a 4k tv but I hope the neo will also allow more graphical effects and higher framrates that I would notice on my 1080p vizio

Downsampling 4K to 1080p is clear as hell. Even if we get games with a higher native res then 1080p. The image quality will benefit a good bit from down sampling

100%. They aren't announcing it in Sep and launching in Mar, that would be incredibly stupid on their part. Why even bother making the event so early, right before the holiday season and kill their own sales.

I can think of a few reasons why they would want to announce it before the holiday season and launch it afterwards:

1) The Neo will be pricey. If the Neo is $150 or $200 more than the Slim then holiday sales of the current PlayStation won't be significantly impacted by the Neo's unavailability. Parents and families doing holiday shopping would sooner buy a $299.99 PlayStation to play COD than buy a $449.99 PlayStation to play the exact same game albeit with better anti-aliasing and an extra reflection on a puddle on level 4.

2) Communicating what it actually is will be critical to its success, and so they need as much time as possible between announcing and launching it. Maybe the Neo isn't just a bump in resolution and framerate?

3) Something might have changed in supply/manufacturing. Perhaps the Neo is a two-part project (as one of the rumors suggests) and the second part (the PSP-like device) won't be ready for market until March? I mean, we can all agree that the Vita is the walking dead, but that doesn't mean Sony has given up on everything handheld-related. Sony is the same company that made VHS tapes up until a year or two ago right? So hypothetically speaking, if Sony said "Lets give this handheld market one more go but do it differently this time", and then they made a new PSP-like device (let's call it X) that could stream all PS4 games and do it faster and with even more features this time, that would make the X a pretty neat device right? If you could somehow dock the X into the Neo and give the Neo some juice, that would be a great selling point for both devices. What if developers made games that were exclusive to the X that could then be played on "the big screen" via the Neo?

4) Give PSVR some breathing room. Perhaps Sony has some data that suggests PSVR sales would be impacted by Neo and vice versa?

5) Software that takes advantage of Neo just isn't ready yet. It's pretty safe to predict that God of War, Horizon, Days Gone, and Detroit will take advantage of Neo, but none of those games will be out before 2017. That makes Neo a much tougher sell this holiday season. The people who would be interested in paying hundreds more dollars for better specs are the people who care more about core software, and Sony knows these people might already have a regular PS4 (and won't buy the Slim) or are going to wait for more software before plunking down the (assumed) $400+ for the Neo. As evidenced by past sales charts, software that performs well during the holiday season is more casual-oriented, e.g. COD/GTA/NBA/NFL/FIFA. Basically, it might be a case where the Slim audience won't be the Neo audience due to price and intended software purchases, so sales for one won't be impacted by sales of the other. I hope that makes sense.

Sony had already made it clear that they don't like the idea of announcing hardware without having it being available soon afterwards. They said that they liked the Apple model and would like to imitate it. Further, we have people claiming that the Neo is already being produced. There is no reason to delay its release at all, they could sell them as they make them.

The only reason Scorpio is so far out from release is because it is no where near being produced. It is August, there is no reason why Sony can't make enough Neo for preorder and release in Nov. And since we know from third party CEO that they WILL announce Neo in the upcoming event, that means they really are about to release it. There is no benefit in screwing themselves over, everything other than the leaks are on track. You don't release new hardware but miss the shopping season, that's crazy.

So anxious to see what the thing looks like. Was hoping we'd have a leak by now considering places are already selling the freakin' slim.

Does make me wonder if Neo is still this year, but I'm almost convinced it has to be...perhaps just a week or two later than the slim.

All good points but going to play devils advocate here.

1) I don't think think slim sales will be affected much either way. Most people buying a Neo will be offloading their launch PS4s. If you've waited 3 years to buy a PS4 the slim is probably what you're going to buy.

2)Hopefully it's not just a resolution/effects bump and there are features we don't know about but there's no way Sony are going to need 6 months to communicate what a Neo is. I mean of it's that complicated they're in trouble.

3) A PS4 slim, Neo, PSVR and PSP3 in the space of 6 months seems incredibly unlikely and even if there is a second part to Neo, a dockable PSP3, I see no reason why the Neo can't come this year and that later.

4)PSVR is looking like it will be supply constrained and the same is likely true for Neo. They'll be able to sell them as fast as they can ship them. At least until the new year.

5)I don't think software will is as difficult to produce as some people think. If Sony manage to secure a few core titles that are Neo enhanced that will be enough for a lot of people. Even titles that are already released could be enough. GTAV, BF4, Doom, The Witcher and a few first party titles like Resogun & Uncharted 4 would be enough to sway me. Any titles released on PC should be too much hassle.

Hold on, hold on, hold on...you think they're going to launch it next year? ...Not a chance.

I'm not picturing a Neo that's more than $450 because I'm not picturing a Scorpio that's more than $500. Microsoft learned their lesson and hopefully Sony hasn't forgotten theirs. If anything you drop the price of the PS4 Slim model to $249.99 or you make the PS4 Slim $299.99 with a game packed-in.

4) Give PSVR some breathing room. Perhaps Sony has some data that suggests PSVR sales would be impacted by Neo and vice versa?

Last I checked PSVR sold out. You can't get anymore right now so they could launch on the same day and it wouldn't matter. No one's going to be getting both unless they pre-ordered VR.

Ultimately, they need to do this this year because the Neo should be on the market long before Scorpio ever pops up.

If it's 399 I'm getting it instead of slim. If not I'm probably getting a slim
Same. Might be able to squeeze an extra $50 in, but if it's any higher I'll probably settle for the $250-300 Slim, and start saving for an NX instead. Or maybe the new Sony handheld (I know it's not likely). God, we are in such a ridiculous situation. Surely there is something these companies can do to avoid so much uncertainty. At this point, I'm even contemplating the mid-range PC route. But Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV...
I. Hate. Rumours.

Andrew y u do dis???

your avatar perfectly suited the reaction to the news!

It's reportedly already in mass production according to a Chinese forum that had a drawing of what the slim looked like months ago.

That's what I was referencing.

Neo wouldn't be in mass production right now if it wasn't coming out this year. The PS4 started ramping up in August of 2013, if we use that as a rough guide, Neo might actually be ahead of that schedule.

They wouldn't be stockpiling them like a normal console launch would require. The slim release would dilute new console demand except for the people who explicitly want the Neo version, so there is even less reason for them to be starting this soon unless it's an October/November 2016 release.

1) Agreed. It's largely the reason why I can see Sony announce the Neo now and launch it later -- different markets for different devices!

2) I too hope that Neo isn't a confusing mess of concepts. An early reveal doesn't necessarily mean it's super difficult to communicate what it is, it just might mean that they need as much time as possible to get the word out there of its existence and its intention. That's the negative of having a global brand: you have to communicate to the whole world and not just to the people who show up to your one conference in your one city.

3) I have no idea what that PSP-like device is. It might just be a regular Vita updated to have beefier internals for remote play.

4) Agreed.

5) Third-party wise, I don't think it's going to be that difficult to get future titles to support Neo mode. Sony might want to have a killer first-party display of the Neo's potential, so they might be thinking "We can tell the world what the Neo is now and launch it when the software is ready". Obviously, Andrew House's comments of an Apple-like launch disprove this point, but that's why this is all speculation and random thought on my part.

Hold on, hold on, hold on...you think they're going to launch it next year? ...Not a chance.

Nah, I'm just thinking of potential reasons the Neo could have a later launch date.

A month ago, I am afraid.
I regret selling mine. Vita and PS3 are gonna keep me afloat for a while, but I'm afraid Neo is nowhere in sight.
Now for a good deal. Because when they announce neo, everyone would want to sell their ps4s. And the price might drop

I keep thinking I should pull the trigger, but with Resident Evil 4, Dead Rising and Bioshock The Collection all preordered and waiting, I don't think I'll be able to go without my PS4 until the Neo launches.

A little off topic and no offense guys but LOL at "my wife gave me approval to buy a video game console."

As a married man the money my wife and I have is ours. If I was going to buy something for more than $100 I would discuss it with her and her me. Not so outrageous. Courtesy more than anything.

I'm no expert, but I assume that's what marriage is? Sounds like responsible behaviour to me.

Back to topic, if anybody knows Neo's price and release date, spit it out. NOW.

Kind of crazy there haven't been fire sales of the ps4 yet and we are only a few weeks away from slim launch. I want a second ps4 for the bedroom.

That's how marriage works though. I'm sure their wives ask before buying overly expensive shoes or jewlery. I think it's kind of exciting and adds an extra thrill to all of this. Excited wait to join married-GAF in a few years.

Anyway, for pricing in these new consoles I'm going with $279 for PS4 Slim and $449 for Neo realistically.

But I would really like to see $229 for Slim and 399 for Neo.

Not all couples have joint bank accounts or share money, so he has a point.

My own familiar experiences taught me that sharing the money all the time is not that good an idea

RE: the marriage thing. We have a joint account, but also our own separate money. While consulting on big purchases is generally an appreciated and courteous thing, we don't necessarily have to if it's our money.

I have no experience with these things. Would that be the actual release date or just a place holder? Also, would love to know if Neo is going to be released alongside it or close to it at least. A Neo/VR bundle sounds feasible to me.

I think it's the date it'll be delivered by. So I guess the release is around that date.
