Sierra classics up on Steam

I remember liking Phantasmagoria and not really understanding the complaints about supposedly terrible FMV and digitizing. The story was well written and captivating, even if a bit cliché. I also thought it was quite short, even though the game was on seven CDs.

Conquests of the Longbow is a good one that didn't make it in. I'd put it up there with the Quest for Glory series - definitely recommended for anyone that hasn't checked it out.

I have good memories of that one. Not sure why it hasn't been put back up for sale. It's not like the rights to Robin Hood are in question.

In related news, I'd do unspeakable things for a Willy Beamish release.

I owned a copy of SWAT 4 on Direct2Drive. Worked fine.

Then they got bought out by Gamefly. Even though I still have the installer file, the stupid thing refuses to work with the authentication servers offline.

Sigh. DRM sucks.

Gamefly sold off Direct2Drive so it's, its own thing again. Maybe download three installer again and try it. I should see if I can find my disk copies when I have time to play things.

Why is everyone calling Hero's Quest the wrong name?

;-)

Thank Hasbro for that...

Their board is pretty sweet though. It was a basic dungeon crawler. The D&D Adventures games add a lot more gameplay with very minimal additional complexity.

I hope we get some of the lesser known games like The Colonel's Bequest or Codename Iceman. TCB is such a unique experience with great atmosphere.

Such an awesome game. It saddens me there were only ever two games in the Conquest series. In a similar vein, would have absolutely loved a 'Three Musketeers' setting, and wondered why no one ever bothered to make a good point and click game for that.

For years the Conquest games (Camelot, Longbow) have been available for download on Christy Marx's personal page. She was the head designer, writer and director for these games, so I wonder if maybe the rights reverted to her for these games after they went out of print?

TCB is fucking AWESOME.

I remember looking through that painting like it was yesterday! So cool!

So many good memories of trying to figure out how to beat Police Quest 1 pre internet. VGA is my favorite, but the remake is decent enough.

Too bad there is no Gold Rush. I remember a friend and I getting stuck on that game as kids, would be neat to go back and figure it out.

I just logged back in to the site. I apparently have a SWAT 4 serial key and a SWAT 4 activation code but they no longer host an installer. Thankfully, I still have my old installer.

Unfortunately, the old activation servers are apparently still down since I can't actually launch the game. I guess Direct2Drive only performed its activation on first launch.

The window that appears with a vague ERROR CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET message has a logo for activeMARK Technologies, whoever they are.

If I love SCUMM games and King's Quest V/VI, which of these are must-plays for me? I've basically hit none of them.

You're right. I thought the only games without a download were the ones with a Steam key. But my copy of Stubbs The Zombie doesn't have one. I'll have to see if I still have the installer and if that also won't work.

3 runs like ass on 8/10 from my experience. Shame. If anyone knows how to get it running without a problem. please share.

Not sure what your issue could be. The GOG version of Swat 3 runs fine for me.

Also, I still have my Swat 4 discs, including the expansion. :D

Mac compatible?!

Noooooooooooo!

Regarding Gabriel Knight 3. The game is known for the infamous cat mustache puzzle, but lets not forget what is possibly the best puzzle ever in a video game. Le Serpent Rouge.

Le Serpente Rouge spans several days, you'll have to interpret a poem, use the in game internet to check for clues, check famous paintings for clues , shapes and patterns, draw lines and shapes in a map and do ground investigation.

All of this at the same time that you progress through the story with Gabriel (Grace is on puzzle). Such a great puzzle that unfortunately doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

All of this plus Robert Holmes soundtrack. Listen to this! The chills!

I love this game so much, humanity needs a remake in CryEngine 3 or something.

I'm familiar with LucasArts adventure games. What Sierra adventure games should I play?

King's Quest, Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory. Be warned: Sierra is a lot harder than LucasArts. You can actually mess up in these games.

This thread makes me wish Steam would get the Kyrandia trilogy from Westwood. Great hard adventure games.

Pretty sure there was a King's Quest collection released on Steam. Lemme check.
Yeah, it's on steam... and I apparently own it? I don't remember buying this.

Just booted it up and King's Quest 5 is in it. I'm going to assume it's on GoG too.

King's Quest Collection was actually removed back when the remake released in a woefully misguided attempt to push people towards it. Fortunately, as you've noticed, common sense has finally prevailed... well, mostly: you still can't buy the games if you're in AU/NZ:

AllowPurchaseFromRestrictedCountries No
PurchaseRestrictedCountries AU NZ

Space Quest Collection is the same.

What kill GK3 for me isn't the stupid cat moustache puzzle, but the god awful 3D mechanics. I would have prefer they continued with the FMV or went back to GK1 style graphics with an improved engine. Early 3D point and clicks was horrible.

I think Quest for Glory is the best of the bunch. It's kind of an adventure/RPG hybrid. Raising stats can be a bit monotonous but it doesn't really take that long. The atmosphere and storytelling are what really set the series apart. Great stuff.

The Gabriel Knight games are also great, some shitty puzzles aside. Gabriel Knight 2 is one of the few 90's FMV games that wasn't a complete joke.

Those two series don't have any dead ends that I know of. You can die in them though, which seems to turn off people for some reason, so save often.

Some of the older Sierra games can really fuck you over making the game unwinnable because you missed an item you can't go back for.King's Quest 5 was a huge dick about this. But I'd still at least recommend the Space Quest games.

Man, the Quest for Glory I remake is one of the defining games of my childhood. My mom bought it for me at the recommendation of a game store employee (the same guy had her buy me Loom... thank you, whoever you are) when I was too young for it... but I managed to brute force my way through nonetheless. I know it holds up, as I've replayed it since... but now I'll be taking this opportunity to go through the other games as well. I hope they live up!

For those tired of easy Telltale gateway adventures, here's some more hardcore stuff.

I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring Sierra over Telltale (although I was never really into them, I preferred Lucasarts over Sierra and I've been done with Telltale for a while now), but this is a weird comparison. Telltale isn't even trying to make games in the same genre anymore, their last classic style adventure game was years ago (and Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse had some great puzzles). There's plenty you can criticize Telltale for but the random insults from classic adventure gaming fans towards them when they're not even intending to make games in that genre anymore is getting a bit boring.

Quest for Glory II is probably my most replayed game ever.

Took me a bunch of tries to get the Paladin ending.

However, I was disappointed that they let you pick his class at the start of QfG3. It should have been only available if you had played the previous game.

Sad that we probably won't get any of the Papyrus sims because of all the licensing issues, but if they can make just one happen, make Grand Prix Legends happen. That was the most brutal racing sim of all time but it was a blast.
