If Sony really wanted to they could add some SPE like co-processors to the APU for media & PS3 BC but I doubt they will because AMD already have media accelerators on their chips so it would be redundant for media.

Don't forget the SPEs have always been co-processors

they aren't going to invest millions in R&D for a new version of the cell chip so people can play old PS3 games
Yeah, either we're never going to see PS3 BC, or if we do, it'll be way down the line when the systems are far more powerful than they are right now (at least 2-3 more proper generations of consoles).

How limited? The having to wrap it?
Having to wrap it and basically having to release and test every game individually which isn't really what people actually hope for. The chances of 360 BC ever getting a decent chunk of worthwhile 360 games is slim. It's similar to what Sony did with PS2 last gen with their software emulator, except they actually sold you the BC games instead.

People need to come to gripes with the fact that BC is not a console selling feature. All it does is add cost to the console for little to no benefit. It may shift a few more consoles for those that really want BC, but those few additional sales are easily over eclipsed by the add cost, and the cost in delaying getting console to a mass consumer friendly price.

And in any case, BC has been replace by services like PSNow and re-masters.

I don't want to see them go :(

uh I think this came out creepier than you intended

Sony's stock price will probably go up while Apple's will go down

stock prices around events are kinda weird. ive seen stock prices go down following a good event. Sony's stock price was virtually unchanged by E3 this year. you'll probably see more change around quarterly reports than anything else.

One thing I'm hoping they announce are the new Playstation Move controllers I'd like to grab a couple without getting gouged on the price by resellers and maybe ending up with a controller that won't charge. Kind of strange they haven't got them up for pre-order already with the PSVR release right around the corner and they seem to be pushing using the move pretty hard in most of the trailers for the games.

I could see the response to this being pretty positive, AAPL almost always goes down on an event, probably exacerbated this year by the murder of the headphone jack

Freudian slip?

Though I agree. I used a bit of PS2 BC on PS3, but it's not a key feature. If it's easy Sony might do it, but Cell is anything but easy.

There is plenty of info on why it's difficult in this thread for those who are interested. For those who aren't, forget it; it isn't going to happen.

Apple is console and Android is PC.

If Sony wanted to build an emulator for Cell that would not be impossible. But it wouldn't be cheap. And people forget how limited the X1 BC really is.

I thought they had a miniaturised PS3 on a board being used en masse in their PS Now servers, so surely they have a streamlined implementation that could be stuck into a PS4 console. Also, PS Now is primarily aimed at gamers without any consoles at all, and PC players. People who don't yet have a PS console of any kind and want to dip in, on their smart TV etc. To me that's the primary market for PS Now services, I don't think it precludes them from pursuing true native backwards compatibility. PS1 and 2 can now be emulated in the PS4 hardware, Cell is the issue for PS3 bc... I don't think it's impossible they might include it in a premium PlayStation console. How much hype would that announcement garner as well, think of that. Think also you can play any and all games in a virtual cinema screen via PSVR. I'm getting GT6 on the go immediately!

Yeah...but you're using a Galaxy S7...with TouchWiz...who wants that?

Keep talking dirty to me

Seriously though, it's more of just the beginning of the end, lots of companies try and follow and creates these trends. They will no doubt still be around for some to come, just having one of the biggest trend setters in Apple can push this to be standard.

Back to topic, any possible way this worker be drunk while describing the design of Neo? It doesn't sound appealing and those mock-ups aren't do it any justice.

I know my mock-ups aren't doing it "justice" but it was fun to do, just to get an idea. I expect the Neo to have a classy design a'la the PS3 and PS4 OG.

Yeah...but you're using a Galaxy S7...with TouchWiz...who wants that?
No I'm not.

Vanilla Marshmellow baby! Looking into Nougat, actually.

Yeah. People thinking it'll cost $399 are just fooling themselves. $499 is what it'll be.

Agreed.
Weight 4.5KG (.5kg short of OG PS3 which included the PS2 Emotion Engine CPU) also believe it was officially stated by House as a premium product.

$399 seems very unlikely.

Well, at least they seem to know NEO is no mass market product if they gon charge a lot for it

In my line of thinking, the more NEO is expensive, the more new remodeled PS4 should be cheap, secure both ends of the market

people think it's $499 because it's heavy? huh?

also, I've seen people get hung up on that word "premium". Andrew House used the word premium literally once in one interview.

IMO the only thing the Neo needs to be in order to be considered premium is at least more expensive than the standard PS4 which means it could be $399 and considered premium.

No.

Compare two figures: the amount it would cost Sony in design/build/test to include a Cell in every Neo vs the number of consumers who
would be swayed in their purchase decision by the inclusion of PS3 BC. There is no way, the only PS3 BC is PS Now for the foreseeable future.

I rather Sony go all out and have a powerful machine, with a premium cost rather than mediocer hardware and a "good" price. It will seem like a missed opportunity if they cater to the masses. They will come eventually as the hardware drops in price after a few years.

I hope I'm the customer they are after.

it definitely is

If they are putting something extra in the Neo that will raise the price a Cell processor is the probably the last thing I want to see.

Agreed 100 percent.

I seriously doubt those leaked specs are still accurate.
I'm in same camp. More weight, bigger power supply, more going on under the hood is likely.

But it's possible the power/cooling needed the upgrade even with leaked specs I suppose.

Weight doesn't mean the price will be more than that $399 alone. It's the specs that matter.

Yeah, agreed

Give me something that will improve the current PS4 library. Many of the PS3 games I'd want to replay have been remastered anyway.

The interesting part is that people assume it will be $399 based on the hardware configuration. What does that have to do with anything? Sony wants to make money, you make money if you sell your products at a higher price than its COGS.

Agreed. It is a simple and easy business decision. The tiny number people they lose by not putting in BC is easily surpassed by the cost savings, the ability to price the console competitively, and the ability to reduce costs faster.

In any case, the market has made it known that they are into HD re-masters now, so much so that EA had to reverse course and jump into the re-master game after being vocally against them at the start.
