Out of the Loop (TM) - Wii

Corky

Nine out of ten orphans can't tell the difference.
Ok I cant take it anymore, my dislike for the whole motion-control aspect of the wii stretches only soo far. And its not far enough for me to ignore games like SMG and other terrific games.

So my first question is obviously what are the must-own games for the wii ( granted I could just check metacritic but I do value gafs opinions higher ).

The ones I plan to get day 1 are :

-SMG
-SMG 2 ( ps. should I play 1 before 2 or does it not matter? )
-Boom Blox
-Okami
-Sin and punishment 2
-Punch out

Those are pretty much the ones I know I want, I bet there are others that I'm missing ( i.e being totally out of the loop and the whole reason for this thread ) so would you kindly fill me in?

In order to maybe lighten the burden of recommending games :

- only wii exclusives ( that is dont want multiplatform games, those I play on my ps3&360 )
- wii sports resort is the only "wii" game I want, and its included in the box.
- I'd love games that arent really mainstream, like S&P for example.
- I rather ( not set in stone or anything ) play games that dont rely too much on motion-controls
- I know nothing about the wiis equivalent to psn/xbla , I'd love some cool small titles.

another problem is that I know NOTHING about the wiis hardware, what kind cables to I need to be able to play the games on the highest resolution ( 480p ?) ? Are the cables included in the box or do I have to buy stuff seperately?

Please gaf, convert this heathen. Show me the good stuff.

For the cables - If you have a HD-TV component cables are sold separately and don't come included.

Games - Three games i was going list are already there. To add to that - New super mario bros wii, monster hunter tri, trauma team. (haven't played this yet though, but it's my next wii game.:lol) zack and wiki, metroid prime trilogy, Tatsunko versus capcom. (if you like fighters) Are all must-owns IMO.

Geometry Wars Galaxies is great. Just make sure you have a classic controller. If you like platformers I would also recommend Klonoa. Both games are dirt cheap these days.

A word of warning, you may prefer to get Okami on the PS2 if you have one. There are some aesthetic changes on the Wii the version that either ruin the game irreparably or are of no significant consequence depending on who you ask. Your mileage may vary.

Also, did you ever own a GameCube? If not, find Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for it (with the drum controllers) and buy that.

Otherwise, I'd recommend Little King's Story and Zack & Wiki. Both Endless Ocean games have had good receptions, too. You might also want to consider the two Trauma Centre games for the Wii, although I'm not sure if buying Trauma Team (the third game in the franchise for the Wii) might make those purchases redundant unless you really love the series.

Wario Land is apparently great, too.

Some good choices in the op already so I'll add these:

New Super Mario Bros Wii - Damn good game, enjoyed it more than NSMB ds by quite a bit.

Monster Hunter Tri if you like the idea of hunting huge monsters co-operatively online and making armor and weapons out of thier bits. But only get it if you're prepared to invest some real time into it and don't mind a bit of a learning curve.

If you like rail shooters then House of the Dead Overkill and the Resident Evil Chronicles games are decent. Dead Space Extraction as well.

If you haven't played Resident Evil 4 then get that on the Wii as well.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010

and NO its not a multiplatform title. its a different beast and much better then the rest

Tatsunoko V Capcom
Red Steel 2
Mario Kart Wii
Excite Truck

Bit Trip Series (I need to get runner but so far so awesome)
Lost Winds 1 + 2
NYXQUEST
Tomena Sammer
Contra Rebirth
Gradius Rebirth

Instead of Boom Blox, get the sequel Boom Blox: Bash Party. It improves many of the dynamics of the first game and has some great downloadable levels.

You're buying S&P2 so you're already on the right track. Other than that I'd suggest the Metroid Prime Trilogy (You'd better start searching for it now, I heard they stopped printing it), No More Heroes and the Trauma Center series.

Can you explain these changes? because i was thinking of replaying okami on the wii someday.:lol

They removed the paper grain filter and the combat is kinda unresponsive. Also, you'd think that the painting mechanic would be perfect on the Wii but it's really not. I have no idea how they messed that one up but it feels really off.

I was more bothered by the way-below-par implementation of the pointer controls.

Anyway, EXCITE TRUCK/BOTS!!
And no one said Smash Bros, so Smash Bros.

AFAIK, a lot of it's to do with some of the filters that were in the original game, and some of the lighting effects as well. Ready at Dawn had to completely re-make the game for the Wii, and some of the visual effects simply weren't possible without the PS2 hardware. There was also a visual element missing from the credits, iirc.

Someone else feel free to correct me if I'm misrepresenting anything.

I find the lack of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and No More Heroes in the OP disturbing.

Oh thanks alot guys

first of all ; shame that the cables arent included. Guess I just gotta buy them then.

and as for the game recommendations

de Blob : just watched a video review, looks like good fun . In the shoppingcart!

New super mario bros : How could I forget about this, buying this aswell ofc!

Monster hunter, not my cup of tea tbh. Have played some older versions and the recent pspone ( not that I'm equating the two ) I'mma have to pass on this one

Trauma center : Its a neat gameidea but doesnt really appeal to me at all .

TvC : Dont like the VS games, MvC, TvC and so on. Besides ssf4 is going to keep me going for a couple of years xD

Zack and wiki : Oooooh I faintly recall reading something about this sometime, puzzle adventure game? Sold. In the cart

Metriod Prime trilogy : Oh yea, I heard that its much better than on the gamecube ( which Iloved anyways ) . Cart , in you must.

Cavestory : YAY! Need this one aswell, bummer than I live in europe I guess I wont ever see it :(

Geometry wars galaxies : I love gwars 1 and 2 on 360, is it as good as those two? If so , bought.

HotD, overkill : Yes, Yes... 2 player lightgun game, its been ages since I played stuff like this

re : Okami, dear gerg, what are these aesthetic changes you are talking about? I'd imagine that the wii-version would be much better given the drawing mechanics and all.

Little Kings story : I've heard that this game is supposed to be quite fun. I think Chuff from rebel Fm kept saying it was good. Will buy if its relatively cheap :)

Dead Space extraction : :O~ , I love Dead space, gimme gimme gimme, cart cart cart

Pro evolution soccer 2010 : :I , I hate sportgames . ( other than nhl 94 ofc )

Red steel 2 : Hm, this is a difficult one I think. The red steel concept hasnt really drawn me in but seeing as its one of the few ( ? ) motion-plus games maybe I should give it a try ?

Bit Trip Beat : Think I saw a quicklook of this on giantbomb, looked awesome, how much is it?

Boom Blox : Bash Party ; thanks a lot , will buy this version instead :) <3

Thank you gaf, keep em' coming !

my wallet hates you all

Seeing as no-ones mentioned it A Boy and his Blob is a really good puzzler\platformer with a lovely art style. Also get a Classic Controller pro, you'll really appreciate it for some games and any Virtual Console purchases.

Well I'm going to buy Okami for the PS2 now.

Wiiware : Sword & soldiers
Worth every penny !

Mario kart Wii (since it wasn't mentioned yet)
Fire Emblem : Radiant Dawn

the rest is almost covered I think.

Graphical fidelity aside, I honestly like it better. It has tons of different levels/scenarios, and there is a medal system for bronze/silver/gold on each level based on your score. You get a helper drone, and it lets you select the style before each stage, with some being more well suited to certain levels than others. As you play the drones level up with use, so even when you have a crappy round at least you're gaining valuable xp. The multiplier is a nice medium between Geometry Wars 1&2. You collect geoms to increase it, and it maxes out at x150. Dying starts it back at zero.

Overall it's the most full featured of the series imo. I'm surprised it doesn't get more love.

Drawing mechanics in Okami Wii are bad. Like, really bad. Like, I hate you you stupid game bad. That is the reason not to get it.

Gaf holds more than 200 threads of wii recommendation.

People will always say the same games: "Little king story!" "Muramasa!!!"....

So, somebody should create a link with all the recomendations (since they´re all the same) and keep it alive. Next thread like this? Link and lock.

BTW, Op is on the same spot as a lot of other people, like me: you have one system, but it comes to a point when, no matter how much you love that system, you´ve played every game you wanted to play on it. And you need something new.

Like me. Until last week i was a Wii only kind of guy. Now i bought a PS3.

Yeah, now im "that guy", that guy with more than one current generation system.

I never wanted to be "that guy", but life changes

Anyway, im still felling the PS3 a little bit "heavy", with all the installing, and updating. But im having fun.

I thought this was something about Nintendo of America's relationship to NCL.

World of Goo
Resident Evil 4
Boom Blox (I recommend both games)
Boy and his Blob
Lostwinds
NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
Art Style series
No More Heroes
Wario Land
Endless Ocean
Metroid Trilogy
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom
Swords & Soldiers
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Zak & Wiki
Rogue Trooper: Quartz Zone Massacre

That's a good mix of Wiiware and retail titles right there.

The list can go on and on. I have a ton of great games on the system and find it ridiculous when people say 'there is nothing to play' or 'there are no good games on the Wii'.

I have all 3 systems and along with PS3 it gets most my play time so I hope you enjoy it.

I agree with this. Galaxies is a superb game and has a ton of variation between levels and the tactics you can use. It doesn't slow down too even with a screen full of crazy stuff happening! A hidden gem in the Wii collection.

Oh, I see you live in Europe so you should give Disaster: Day of Crisis a try. The driving segments aren't that good but it's a pretty fun ride for the price it's being sold at by now.

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits - :O dont know what I'm looking at here on youtube but it looks awesome. Is it a wiiware game?

Art Style series - heard of them, gotta check em out.

No More Heroes - oh yea nmh1 and 2 are soo bought

Wario Land - dear god, wario land shake it looks phenomenal! :O bought. :'(

hear hear, many people ( like myself ) are stuck in a mentality that certain consoles only holds 1 or 2 desirable titles. Whereas in reality, just like this thread has proven, ending up buying a console for one game and you enter a gateway of tons of titles you had no idea you coveted.

Just like me

I thought SMG was the only title I wanted basically, now look at me, I'm like up to 40 titles.

Same goes for 360 , buy it for gears or halo and youll end up with many many others titles. As with the ps3, mgs4 ---> etc etcetc

Rabbids Go Home- clever platformer that makes full use of the character's potential and doesn't outstay its welcome. Probably cheap now, too!

Little King's Story fits those criterias and another one:

Hell-fucking-balls-to-the-walls awesome.

Edit: You seem to like 2d gaming, you must own this.

Glass Soldier said:
No it's really not. It's good, mind you, but its platforming sections hold no candle to NSMBWii.
Well I wasn't being literal, but apart from the motion controlled platforms in a few levels, the single-player gameplay isn't that far removed, just some cosmetic differences.

Go buy A Boy and his Blob. Check out some gameplay vids of Muramasa to see if it interests you.

Well, he did say he wanted exclusives. Those two aren't. He also said he didn't want waggle heavy games, those two are mildly waggle-ish. Still good games though.
