The slim launch must be imminent. The fact that units are leaking from the distribution channel and the fact that stocks of the current model are drying up point to an early September release.

I'm hoping for a late September or early October release for Neo. Personally, I'd prefer to be able to preload PSVR launch titles onto a new console, rather than need to delete stuff to make space and then need to transfer everything.

For many reasons posted above, a 2017 launch for Neo seems very unlikely.

Both Slim and Neo will come out in September.

If someone could edit the OG PS4 and a Neo mockup into the gif it would be perfect.

Yup, it's either going to be "available today" or "this week" at the latest for the slim.

I'm honestly expecting the Neo to be out on or before October 13th as well.
Neo will be out in time for psvr - simply has to be . And makes sense that they've boosted gpu more than cpu if this is going to be marketed as "the best place to play psvr"

Anyone who still thinks the Neo isn't coming late september or begin october is fooling themselves. The mandates for a neo day one patch and cutoff point for neo modes in games are in plain sight, in the leaked documents.

Why do you think they would bother to make two seperate requirements (late sep, begin october)? Also, I would assume that all games from october have the neo mode 'ready' printed on the box. It wouldn't make sense to have games on shelves if they don't have the hardware to play it available right next to it.

I think they've made a mistake releasing the slim and neo in close proximity (if that's what they do)

For me it will confuse some. I mean it's not like when the 360 came out and you could buy the core version or the one with the hard drive. Mum's and dads are gonna be seeing two ps4's on shelves and not really knowing what to get.

Plus the Scorpio isn't releasing to late next year and by all accounts is gonna be the most powerful console, if I was Sony I'd announce the slim, sell it for a year and then at e3 announce neo with more powerful components than previously stated and basically one up Microsoft.

I wouldn't even advertise it as the neo (of some half way point 5 model) . I'd go for ps5.

PS4NEO will be named something different on the box, PS4 Slim will be named PS4.

Also, having the PS5 come out only 4 years after PS4 and 1 year after the slim would be a disaster.

Sony don't need to chase MS's specs.

They'll get the cheap one

Pretty much every electronic products does this nowadays though. I don't know why it would be hard to differentiate between consoles, but not between different laptops, phones, tablets and televisions.

Your right, still I feel people don't always know what they are getting in this regard.

I felt like consumers are still ill informed, especially by staff in the store, the amount of times I've been told wrong information in regards to gaming and has to correct the person who works in the store, well I've lost count.

Two identical looking 360s for different prices is less confusing than two different looking Playstations at different prices?

Can't think of an example where the company with the better product that was leading in sales then tried to undercut their main competition.
Sony kinda did that in 2002 when they dropped the PS2 to $199 at what was basically the peak of its sales dominance basically cementing their lead. MS tried to match the price in the same month and Nintendo was going for $199 from the start though.

The argument is that Sony would seek to cement their lead by pricing MS out of the market entirely but I don't think it makes that much sense in these circumstances as it did in 2002.

The last time Playstation released a home console with a different name was for the PSX called PSone. So PS4 name will be basic imo with PS4K or PS4 with a 4K compatible sticker.

I'm sure Sony were working on the Neo for a long time before the Scorpio announcement. They are not going to throw away their R&D efforts because of an MS PowerPoint presentation which is basically a statement of intent, rather than a hardware announcement.

I do think that the MS PR department have done an excellent job of undermining the Neo launch: just look at all the concern in this thread about Neo being underpowered compared to Scorpio. MS must be chuckling to themselves that they were able to generate these levels of FUD with a motherboard render and some talking heads!

Which I presume they can still do at $250 due to not having an expensive 4K player in it.

You really think Xbox is operating at a loss?
4k player...UHD Blu-ray costs no more to support than HD blu-ray provided you plan to support True Audio, have a TEE, Plan to support Miracast and Vidipath and will be selling a few million consoles. This is supported by the XB1 Slim hardware price breakdown. It's the large cache die area that increases the cost of the XB1. 14 nm decrease the impact of that die area with more chips per wafer. Having hardware supporting UHD blu-ray in 2013 with firmware update in 2016 would have been more expensive for the HEVC codec without HEVC accelerators which were available in AMD GCN dGPUs in 2014.

Penello of Microsoft when he confirmed the Launch XB1 would not support UHD Blu-ray stated the BD-ROM HD blu-ray drive needed a firmware update and a new lens to read three layers to support UHD disks. BD-RE drives from 2011 can read the 3 layer version 2 disks that UHD uses so the lens was in that drive. A read only BD-RE drive then becomes the new BD-ROM version 4 drive after a firmware update. Replacing a Lens does not increase the cost of the drive.

Edit: The 2013 PS4 supports BD-ROM and the 2008 BD-RE V2 which is what the PS3 supports after a firmware update in 2008. BD-RE V3 spec was published in 2010 and 2011 BD-RE drives supported it.

http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160805005103/en/IHS-Markit-Teardown-Analysis-Microsoft%E2%80%99s-Xbox-Brings said:
The combined hardware and manufacturing cost of the new Xbox One S game console from Microsoft, the new analysis says, amounts to $324. That’s just $24 more than the most recent Xbox One teardown analysis conducted in March of this year, primarily due to upgrades in the fabrication of its central processing unit (CPU), the inclusion of a two terabyte (2TB) hard drive and an ultra-high-definition (UHD) BD-ROM player in place of the previous conventional Blu-ray drive.
Going from a 500 GB to 2 TB hard disk exceeds the price difference of $24. Plans are to sell the 500GB XB1 slim for $299 and 2TB model for $399.

Well, if we can learn anything from console history, getting ahead of the market by a full year and pricing your product below your competition may be more important than 50% more power.

We shall see.

+1

yep, clearly played well to the fanboy choir that one...

I think it undermines it to a point, but once videos of Neo enhanced games starting showing up, I think a decent amount of the "concern" will disappear.

It's going to be interesting to see if MS goes full on "orders of magnitude" (ala Cell) levels of hype for Scorpio, it could come back to haunt them if they're not careful.

I still laugh when I think of that chip with "4K" written on it.

The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2 being some of the few games this fall to have Neo updates could help give them a small boost in sales.

Truth.

Especially that last paragraph.

MS's PR department is legendary for a reason!

MS win and lose base on PR performance.
Xbox one PR lost them the war, Scorpio PR will mark their come back. Well played MSPR team.

Since Microsoft is releasing the Scorpio next year so they decided to release the S with 4K because of the PS4K imo in order to seem like they are not late to the party. Is more powerful more important than releasing first. Are developers going to create games for the PS4 and port it even though the Scorpio is "more powerful". By the time the Scorpio comes out the PS4 is said to have sold 60 million +.

Heres a fun fact:

Playstation Spain, South Africa, Madagascar, Congo, don't know jack shit.

They'll probably find out about Neo a few hours before the conference.

The only people that actually know anything are USA, UK, and Japan.

I'm from South Africa and i have been riding the NeoGAF Hype Train since just before the PS4 reveal in February 2013.

All aboard!!

Also, hype before next week's unveiling ^_^.

edit: Just want to add too, it will be interesting to see what us OG are gonna say once all is revealed because back home here there is no incentives to my knowledge in trading in your OG PS4 to save up for the new one.

I want to see personally for me how PSN handles the new WiFi chips because this has been an issue for only those of us that have an issue.

Doesn't matter how much PS4 sold, Scorpio will get PC ultra setting "port" anyway.
Plus, if they don't announce Scorpio in advance, thing might be worse. That's why this is clever, they stop some fans from jumping into Neo and make Neo look less powerful. Two birds one stone. 3 birds if you count oneS

These things are planned months in advance, they didn't just suddenly decide to launch a console.
(which, btw, is already out and you can buy today, so it's not MS that are late to the party here... ;-)).

Anyway, back on topic - c'mon Sony, I wanna see what you've got coming!

They also stop xbox fans who are with ps4s from jumping to xone. Why invest in a console, when you know a better version is comming next year? Your logic is flawed on so many levels.

We've known about the neo months ago, it's not hard changing the S blu ray drive and hdmi port.

Everyone they stopped from buying a console before Scorpio release is a win, doesn't matter what fans or what console they owned.
Stop someone from buying a Neo, great win. Stop someone from buying a Xbox one S, still win after a year.

Scorpio has to battle it out with PC now though, having the exact same games puts them more in competition than Sony or Nintendo ever could.

Turf wars

lol.
Great logic there.
