It's a shame. 2.5" drives are limited.
never say never though. the box is thicker than the slim. AND it's "heavier"
I just don't see it being cost effective to have two different drive slots when this design and the slim are so similar. but then again 3.5" drives are cheaper.

Phasing out optical is inevitable as it just doesn't have the bandwidth required for newer audio formats. It will disappear, if not on the Neo then definitely on the next console. The market always provides solutions, though:

The mental image I have of the Neo right now visualizes a PS4 that is quite fat.

Foxconn artist latest image looks legit. The symbols are in the same order as the break out box, etc. I am sure they are much smaller than what he/she has shown, as they were not included in previous descriptions.

One has to be the camera port, and the other looks like optical audio.
This whole generation sony has been paying homage to the past generations. Making it feel retro to the PS2 design, makes perfect sense.

The highest resolution that thing can achieve is 4K@25Hz with 8bits per colour. Extrapolated from the max bandwidth. Not an ideal solution.

Which confirms my assumptions I talked about before that the Neo won't have any special name neither engraved on it nor printed on the cardbox, just like any previous PS4 model and the PS4 Slim, same for Xbox One S :
Xbox One S, PS4 Slim and PS4K/Neo are just appellations to speak of the new consoles and to name them just when talking and not how to ship them.
We will just get another package with different model number on it like with every model. The only way to make the difference is from the look of package, how big it is, the look of the console, how different, big it looks compared to the other PS4 models and the PlayStation symbols engraved on it. Without forgetting the role of Sony marketing and the retailers to explain the difference to cossumers who don't know about it.

Current PS devices only support drives up to 9.5mm in height. Unless Neo is going to have different drive limitations from the previous PS consoles. The drive you linked won't fit.

I was pointing to a representative sample of what the market provides, not a specific product recommendation. Doubtless there are other products that provide similar functionality with different specs.
Sony knows the optical port has no future. It's just a question of how fast they phase it out, and the Slim suggests they may be aggressive about it. I feel your pain. I recently bought a NAS with setup instructions that claimed you needed a VGA display for setup and had to dig around to find a display that would actually work with it (it turns out you can also use IPMI over Ethernet, thank goodness.) Format changes are always a pain.

One question haunts my mind : If Sony is proposing a trade in program for Neo (mostly for the first year
), how are people who bought the PS4 in countries where there are no special gaming shops, just from random shops, or those who bought a PS4 from another country, supposed to take part in that trade in Program?
If they can't and are forced to buy a Neo, do they get compensation like free games or other stuff or do they curse themselves for not being lucky?

There won't be a trade in program from Sony, retailers will of course try to offer something so they can get a regular PS4 cheap and sell it with high margin. No need to worry.
You can almost certainly stop right there. I will be completely shocked if Sony offers a trade-in program. Retailers who have a reasonable expectation of selling the used consoles they get in trade might choose to do so, but it's entirely up to them.
Sony is under no obligation to take back your PS4 or compensate you for any perceived slight. You aren't "forced" to buy a Neo. You may choose to do so, and what you do with your PS4 is entirely up to you. Keep it? Sell it? Raffle it off? Give it away?
