Apple Hikes Order Volumes for iPhone 7 Parts in Wake of Samsung Recall

Apple has reportedly hiked orders for parts and components required for the production of the upcoming iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, according to sources from the supply chain in Taiwan (via DigiTimes).

Apple shipped on average 30 million iPhone 6s units a month in the second half of 2015. The company originally predicted shipments of the iPhone 7 this year would reach only 60 percent of that number over the same period, but supply chain sources are today reporting that Apple has boosted its original prediction by 10 percent.

The hike in order volumes suggests Apple is increasingly upbeat about demand for the new devices among existing iPhone owners seeking to upgrade, despite relatively subdued interest in the iPhone 7 models compared to the pre-launch buzz of previous years.

Another potential factor in Apple's upward revision is Samsung's global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone last week, which followed numerous complaints that the device caught fire while charging. The news arguably couldn't have come at a worse time for Apple's biggest rival, which has pitched its Note 7 as a direct competitor to Apple's 5.5-inch iPhones.

Samsung has already voluntarily pulled its flagship device from 10 countries, including South Korea and the U.S
. Target has reportedly stopped selling the phone, while Amazon and Best Buy have also said they are no longer selling the Note 7. In the latest blow, Consumer Reports has called for an official recall which would make it illegal to sell the phones in the U.S.

Samsung has told customers it will take at least 14 days to replace their phones, and with several mobile operators including T-Mobile offering full refunds to Note buyers over the same week the new iPhones are expected to be announced, Apple's offering could prove a tempting alternative.

A lot depends on how fast Apple can fulfill pre-orders for its new handsets.
While the company typically releases an iPhone about two weeks after introducing it, scheduling information from AT&T indicates that the iPhone 7 might not launch until later in the month, on September 23.

Previous information from notable smartphone leaker Even Blass suggested pre-orders for the iPhone 7 will take place this Friday, September 9, two days after the debut event. That date is in line with the schedule from AT&T.

However, Blass also predicted an iPhone launch for September 16, so if the AT&T information is accurate and does relate to release preparations, the previous prediction could be incorrect. September 16 and September 23 are both likely candidates for an iPhone release date.

Despite Apple's revised orders, some suppliers reportedly remain worried that the uplift could be short-lived, given that order volumes for new parts and components may start drifting down in Q4 "on seasonality".

Looking good for Apple.

We will see. I think lack of a headphone jack will really hurt 7 sales. People will wait to upgrade unless forced by a broken phone.

Samsung when they realize the exploding Galaxy Note 7's were all owned by Apple employees.

Definitely returned my Note 7 and will be absolutely all over the iPhone 7. Very happy back with a 6S Plus for the time being. Gimme dat black iP7 Plus.

You have to admit they'd be silly not to capitalize on this. There's no way at least a portion of the user base won't be swayed.

I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibility, but there's no fact to back it up despite the headline essentially presenting it as such. It's pure speculation.

I don't think the vast majority of people will know there is no headphone jack until they buy it.

Yep.
Anecdotally, nobody I've talked to has known about it before I mentioned it. It'll be interesting to see if Apple manage to sell it to the mainstream, especially here in the UK where cheap wired headphones are the most common thing and bluetooth headphones are pretty rare to spot in the wild.

This is like the US presidential election all over again. Do you want the obviously defective one, or the one that is bought by Big Headphone?

iPhone owner for the last six years and I'm a due for an upgrade, but the double whammy of no headphone jack plus AT&T no longer offering the 2 year contract deal means I'm probably passing on this, at least any time soon.

I only switched back to iOS a couple of years ago but I primarily use my phone for listening to music/podcasts in the office. Without being able to charge while doing that (and with having an easy to break little dongle) an iPhone 7 is a massive downgrade for me.

My upgrade is due October, so it's back to Android for me. Hopefully they do an iPhone SE style thing but for the headphone jack in a couple of years and I can reasonably switch back. Or bluetooth headphone technology makes massive leaps and becomes affordable.

Honest question, why do people support this company? Do you guys own a lot of stock in Apple? They were bound to make profits regardless but why are people so happy when they end up posting record profits? I just don't understand.

it's gonna sell better than people think. no headphone jack won't be an issue

Yeah, people are crazy if they think it's going to bomb or something.
I think it's going to sell less than the 6S but that's just based on the YoY sales of the iPhone in the quarters since the 6S came out being down significantly and this phone not seeming to be the big design refresh people want from a new numbered iPhone.

nah I think it will sell better than the 6S. the iPhone 6 was a huge unprecedented surge in sales due to big phone thirst. it was inevitable that the 6S wouldn't sell as much as the 6.

Yes? Every purchase from the Apple Store grants you an equivalent amount in AAPL shares, making you an automatic investor.

Are you serious? They make great products.

people like their products?

That's fine. I personally dislike their products and their arrogance but why do people feel happy when Apple breaks profit records? Users aren't directly benefiting from it unless you maybe own stock and even then you need to own a pretty significant sum. Apple unlike Amazon doesn't reinvest the vast sum of their profits to innovate.

Without a design refresh or a big bump in specs though, I can see a lot of people waiting until next year. The 6 is still a fantastic phone and isn't showing any signs of aging.

early indications seems to be it is a big bump in specs and camera. time will tell though

I think people that returned the note 7 would rather get a S7 edge than a new iPhone.

Didn't you hear, Samsung is the sex these days. There flag ship phones are hot stuff design wise.

Yeah if I didn't stupidly buy this 6+ and got a regular 6 I definitely would not upgrade

It's like when your football team wins.

I've got a galaxy s7 and it gets pretty damn hot when charging. I guess if the note 7 was recalled for catching fire I'm feeling like my concern may be justified.

I don't really understand what you're getting at here. if you buy an iPhone you're in a cult?

Not at all. Feel free to correct me on this but I don't see console gamers getting elated when Sony or Microsoft post record profits that don't directly benefit them. I'm not saying that everyone that buys Apple products does it for the 'status', most have legitimate uses for the device but it remains one of the leading manufacturers of products bought to appeal to the desire for a status symbol.
