Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 | The 'Verse Awakens

Mostly OT, but anyway. I spent the last few days familiarizing myself with Sketchup in the attempt to design stands for my studio monitors. Once I got the hang of it, I tried to recreate my computer / music room and swap my current L-shaped table for a straight one to see how I liked the look / feel of it. More importantly, it will allow me to properly install joystick mounts when the time comes. I copied the Monster Tech mount we discussed a while back.

I'm liking what I'm seeing. Time to start saving for dem dual Warthogs.

Holy crap, I just noticed that you can see his visor sealing and unsealing. If you look closely at the glass visor after it has come down initially and the rest of the mask part starts to come together you can see that it slightly moves like it's sealing or unsealing if it's coming off. Amazing.

I don't know why this impresses me so much but It's kinda blowing my mind right now lol.

Great catch!

The updated shield effects are so much better now. The effect looks nice and now the bubble follows the ship contours.

Yeah it actually looks quite a bit better. It is really nice to see they iterrate on so many elements in this game all the time.
I love how he hits both Vanguards with his shots at that one moment and it looks like they are flying in formation almost. God damn.

How does that work, the left one is set as throttle on one axis ?

You ideally want 6 degrees of freedom. You primarily want Pitch,Roll,Yaw. Then you also want to be able to strafe X,Y,Z and if you consider Z to be the primary axis of the ship then Z strafe is the same as a simple throttle, which you'll probably map to the Y axis of the joystick..

Don't get Warthogs, they're overpriced and have really really crappy gimbals. Look into VKB's stuff.

Look being the operative word, since you'll have a hard time buying anything if it's like their previous releases. Hopefully the Gunfighter is made in large enough quantities to not be out of stock right after release.

Used market or just follow their forums. I managed to get their Mk4 pedals and a Glad Pro with no issues. Even the basic Gladiator has better internals than the Warthog.

Yeah, the Gladiator line is supposed to be for the mass market. If they couldn't produce that in quantity, it'd have been a complete failure. If I'm going to replace my Warthog though, it's going to be with the best they can offer - the Gunfighter. It remains to be seen whether they can produce the Gunfigther in Gladiator quantities, or whether it'll end up being closer to Mamba levels.

Going to grab the Gunfighter as well. Hopefully won't break the bank too terribly.

Oh that's 6 DOF okay. I saw that term being mentionned a few times but didn't know what it meant exactly. I only got a saitek X52, but I never actually tried it with Star Citizen. I'm guessing it's not possible with it.
Pitch Roll Yaw, no problem, but strafe..
I may buy the official hotas anyway. My X52 sometimes disconnects, one of the plug is a little loose.

Ugh, now I want another ultra expensive peripheral. 😢

Looks like someone figured out how to achieve the slow motion idea we were throwing around earlier.

Oh damn, you can really see the difference between new damage model and outdated damage model in this.

I feel the slow motion combined with the zero initial velocity makes them look worse than when in motion. Can easily see all the physics jank. Though some of the older ships are amusing because of this. The F7 in particular seems to be subject to spontaneous hull separation syndrome which then causes a resultant explosion. =P

Edit:
Ugh, now I want another ultra expensive peripheral.
On the positive side, those expensive peripherals tend to last for damn near ever. High end input devices are one of the most sensible uses of money in computer land. They excel at the job they're made for, don't really outdate, and rarely break down. Compared to all the other high end computer hardware which is near obsolete within a year, they're great investments.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but can anyone recommend a flight sim with controls appreciable to SC for the sake of learning to use dual joysticks? The alpha just does not run too well on my current pc and getting it running consistently without crashing is currently a bit of a headache.

Crashing in AC? That should be stable for purposes of testing input methods.

If you want another game though, there's Elite. It's very different on the handling side, but since it's capable of 6DoF controls, it's closer to SC than any non-space game. It's also a good game besides that, so no harm in recommending it.

The crashing may be my own fault. I'll give it another shot, but partly I want to try something with a bit more variety while waiting for future SC updates. I'll give Elite a shot, thanks!

Would recommend Diaspora, Freespace 2 stand alone BSG mod:

Has 6Dof and plays great.

Also House of the Dying Sun on steam.

Any info on the state of the new patching system? I am still waiting to download the game at the moment because I can't keep downloading 30GB every small patch. AFAIK, they are working on a new patch system with much smaller patches.

Just stay away from the PTU and you'll only have to download 30GBs every 2-4 months. 2.5 was the first patch since July.

As far as the patching system, last real mention was the May monthly report, so we don't really know the status.

I took a look at VKB's stuff. I knew about the Mamba, but that's about it. Sucks that they're having problems with production, although they seem to be working on it and hope to have it sorted when the Gunfighter becomes availabe later this year (or not long after that).

Speaking of the Gunfighter ...

... might as well go all the way. :D

Well all the way would be the Gunfighter + extension (if center mounting) + Warthog adapter + Warthog handle. You wanted to get the Warthogs anyhow... Right? =P

People seem to really like the Warthog stick's shape and feel, yeah. There might not be much of a choice for high-end dual stick configs, unless somebody comes out with a left hand mod for the Gunfighter. :)

I'm getting an Titan X Pascal rig next month and need something to make most out of it. Obviously SC is the top choice. But even after reading all kinds of stuff I don't really understand what kind of a game it is. Is it like Destiny, hub worlds for social, and FPS missions for the core game play? If so, how is the shooter gameplay? Or is it like WoW, where the hub world is the main attraction, and raids are almost a seamless continuation? Or is there a big Eve online type of a space combat component to it? Hard to figure it out.

Did you watch the 3.0 alpha demo? That is a more involved example of combat based gameplay loop. You also don't have to fight, you could transport goods, information, smuggle etc. (though you may need to hire protection).

Additionally the world will have systemic elements, missions get generated based on events in the world, economic systems etc.

Server wise, the entire universe will be dynamically sharded for players, but share a universal world state simulation. No hubs or anything like that. At the same time, there will be no selecting what channel you want to be in like your typical MMO. Here's an old transmission, but good enough to get across the general idea. Right now, however, the sharding is extremely basic and doesn't account for organizations and such. Then again, right now everything about the PU is extremely basic. Also performance issues. Alpha and all that.

The game isn't at a state where it is useful for "making the most of" a high powered PC. Perhaps when 3.0 hits it might start becoming that game, but not right now.

Also it seems like some big improvements and strands have been made in regards to the shard system and zoning system. When it comes to the early talks and ideas/implementation and concept. But that may be reading into it a bit much, even coming from Chris Roberts himself and Tony Zurovec . Though I'm sure, we will see and hear more about that in some way at CitizenCon or soon after 3.0 alpha.

But yeah no hubs worlds or such nonsense -There are social hubs within the universe. But no one is stuck there- it's one big universe to explore. To make it clear though, were not talking No man Sky's or Elite Dangerous millions or billions of galaxies or systems. But a cool 100 or so -or more- star systems that are both procedural enhanced -key- and hand crafted. In order to bring about more tactile interaction and player involvement/things to see/do and hopefully that interjects more life into these planets and places/worlds, while making them unique. Even still -my opinion- that's not to say that the Procedural tech won't be used to fill out more planets or systems -Because realistically not every planet need to have something interesting on it or happening- but CIG seems amendment about keeping things personal in regards to the game and the environment it wishes to translate.

(In Star Citizen; MMO. Also there is a single player game called Squadron 42 that should come out at the end of this year or sometime next year depending on. What comes out of the live streamed community event this October 9th; hosted by Cloud Imperium Games on Twitch )

I'm interested in seeing how cargo will impact fighting in the PU. I have the feeling that one man fighters without places for cargo will get phased out unless they're paired with a ship that has a cargo capacity.

It feels like just normal engagments without a way to make up for the cost of repairs/resupply/fuel will drive out those ships.

Unless there's trading that would allow players to pay for a player escort I feel like those ships will be restricted to bounty hunting or doing low risk missions to make any kind of profit.

Gonna be interesting to see how basic professions work in 3.0

There's plenty of uses for dedicated fighters. I mean, do you really think Hull Es are going to go trading solo? Do you think an Idris' fighter contingent is going to need cargo capacity? That you'll need cargo space for kill contracts? Pure fighters have uses just like ships with no (practical) combat capabilities. The skill in the game is going to come down to best utilizing the tools available for the job.

I don't know why I never asked here before but it just occurred to me so worth a shot. Due to medical reasons I'm looking to get a new desk chair, hopefully one with a bit better padding mainly, but ideally I'd also like one that I could easily mount my Siatek X52 Pro onto. I don't want to break the bank and have limited space so I can't really afford a proper setup for it but my current setup was custom made from old pipes and VESA mounts screwed into a crappy chair. If anyone has any suggestions for a particular one that I could easily set up with what I have available would be really appreciated, but I'd rather not be drilling holes this time.

I take it joystick desk mounts are out of the question?

Unfortunately so. I love the idea of them as they look really sturdy, however I'd have to hope one slots under my pc without issue and both may be blocked by the keyboard rail or these annoying little support columns on my desk. They'd have been ideal if I had some more space to work with.

So i just got an gtx 1060 a ultra wide display 16 gb of ram and an 512 ssd.
What THE HELL am i supposed to buy to play this game.
i just want to play it.

Their shop looks like a giant mess.

Either one of these ship packages will give you everything you need to play.
they both include Squadron 42 (the single player part of the game) and Star Citizen ( the MMO part of the game )

Aurora MR Star Citizen + Squadron 42 Combo.
Mustang Alpha Star Citizen + Squadron 42 Combo.

Are you looking at the site with someone else's account? If you just go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com without an account (or with nothing purchased), you'll see a link that says FLY NOW or ENLIST NOW. Click it and pick one of the two starter ships.

You get access to the MMO portion of the game for $45. You also get an option to add the full single-player campaign for $15 right after choosing a ship. It's probably a good idea.

... of Infinity: Battlescape. More here.

I've was watching this one a while ago (first game to my knowledge with atmo and space combat flight models). Sheeeet I didn't think it would get that far out of Kickstarter, but that looks pretty incredible and from what I've seen the gameplay matches too.
