Games ruined by creator's politics

None for me. If a game is something I'm interested in, I could care less about a creator's politics provided said politics aren't a big part of the game. Stuff like Armikrog, Shadow Complex and Dragon Quest included. I say that as a Bi Jewish woman.

If anything, the opposite direction (politics injected into the game to a great capacity) is what turns me off. I didn't try Undertale for the longest time because I kept seeing it described as "tumblr-bait".

For me...The Last of Us: Left Behind.

I was definitely left behind, because I am not intrigued by homosexuality nor exploring same sex relations.

This isn't bannable, you should just really be personally embarrassed of yourself that this is a thing that you thought, and then that you didn't immediately go "wow that was silly, I should maybe be able to tolerate one gay relationship in a game once," and then that you thought this foolish position was something it was useful and worthwhile to share with other people instead of keeping it to yourself.

Lots of talented artists are pretty shitty people. You need to separate them from their creations and try not to think about it.

No, nobody "needs" to do that. This claim that art MUST be consumed entirely outside of context and without consideration of any real-world factors is bizarre, and also not something anyone actually believes once you replace "politics" with "business practices" or "platform selection" or whatever else people post giant threads about here.

The racist moron who works for BioWare on the new Mass Effect.

???

Who?

For me...I can't really think of an example of a game where I've been put off due to the creator's politics, but mainly because half the time I don't delve into it, form a BTS point of view. If an idea or message is conveyed in game then yeah, I can't think of an example off the top of my head but I know my opinion on a few games has been soured because of a moment, scene etc.

I had no idea about the DQ composer guy.

As for Ken Levine...I don't think in that interview he was trying to say that these things are 100% happening all the time in real life, just as a concept it's worth exploring in a story. He said that Andrew Ryan and BioShock 1 was easier for him to write vs Infinite, but I don't think he meant to say anything beyond exploring a concept. The bolded bit was the interviewer's question anyway, but I still don't know if I understand it or not.

The Fez guy! I've not played it nor have I followed mr. Fish but I know he was talked about a lot in a negative light. But on the other hand people always said the game was good so you cannot say the game was ruined. But I do think the first thing people think about when they think of Fez, is him. So you might say the games legacy has been tarnished by him.

It's not politics, but the MGS series is kinda ruined for me in retrospect by Kojima's misogyny. MGSV was the height of it, but they all have their share of grossness. Especially MGS4. Kojima is revered as such a genius, but the dude is a fucking sicko.

"They basically think, if I can use a 2016 metaphor, that you created a game in which Donald Trump founded a xenophobic colony in the sky, only to learn that the Mexicans really are rapists."

I get that Levine is a dude who tends to speak from his gut a bit too much sometimes and I'm certain he didn't exactly mean for this to carry the myriad horrible connotations a remark like this does

It wasn't him who said this, though. The link you provided clearly puts this quote in the interviewer's mouth.

It wouldn't even make sense for him to say "you created a game", it's his game.

Not that this should change the way you think about Infinite, but fair's fair.

Man I sure hope no one is judging your entire character based on shit you said almost a decade ago in a niche website interview.
If he took back his statements from a decade ago and made a complete 180, you'd have a point. If he still stands by his claims from a decade ago, then who cares if they were made a decade ago or today?

For me...The Last of Us: Left Behind.

I was definitely left behind, because I am not intrigued by homosexuality nor exploring same sex relations.
What the fuck, is this for real?
For one, having a same-sex relationship in a story isn't a political statement. And for another, it's off-topic, because you'd be rejecting a game for its contents, not the political views of its creator.

What a terrible post.

I absolutely love Dragon Quest, and just picked up VII on the 3DS.

A few weeks ago I read about Sugiyama's drive to spread denial of Japan's war atrocities. What a fucking horrible man.

Now I just can't get it out of my head when listening to his music. I try to blank it out, but the music in DQ is so catchy and encompassing. It is almost half of the experience of playing the game.

All I can think about when hearing it now is what an absolute shit stain the creator of it is.

It really sucks.

Is he scoring GQXI? I hope not I am really looking forward to it.

Don't know if you're referring to me for this one, but I was talking about the story of Shadow Complex/Empire.
Orson Scott Card hates liberals, so he set them up as villains in a story where they hate our troops so much that they try to take over the country with evil robots.

Like Charlequin said, Chair kinda wrote around it and aren't necessarily in agreement with OSC.

Huh? Why would you think I was jumping on you? Nah man you didn't say anything remotely out there to me, such is why I never quoted you. The people I was referring to were all banned lol, well except the dude who made a little implication that he hates the U.S. Army but refused to elaborate when I asked him to. It's probably for the best as I've a slight bias anyway as a vet, but no man I got nothing against you, sorry for the miscommunication :)

Not exactly political, but after Kotaku's expose on Denis Dyack being a super hostile employer, I always feel weird when playing Too Human (yes I'm one of the 4 people that likes it).

He's pervy, but I've never perceived him to be misogynistic in the slightest. He's an equal-opportunity pervert, too, given how much beefcake he manages to get into his games to go along with the cheesecake.

The big one I remember was Orson Scott Card and his relation to Shadow Complex.

He's homophobic, etc.

Came to say this, also if you want to see how much social progress we've made over the past 8 years in terms of people's attitudes towards LGBT, those 2008 GAF threads are a great start. Insane some of the posts in that thread didn't result in bans.

Fuck this thread is making them come out of the woodworks isn't it? :lol

I just heard "Could you imagine what happened if I tweeted my actual (racist) opinion!?". The Bioware dev is clearly extremely tongue in cheek, I don't even wanna know half the shit he's probably endured due to not being a white dude

Akira - Amiga version

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/kusoge/kusoge-akira.htm

But how did it all go wrong? The Akira source material is so rich that game development should have been easy. Developed by ICE Software in the UK, I managed to track down almost everyone involved. Unsurprisingly all were keen to distance themselves
.........................................................................................................................................
Curiously no one wanted to remember their days at ICE Software. During my research though, I managed to find someone willing to talk. He revealed interesting things about Deborah Isaac, head of production on Akira, and Stuart Bell, head of the company. For said person's safety I agree to quote them anonymously: "Ah, Akira was developed before I joined. Deborah Isaac... well she ran the company with her husband Stuart Bell. They let the company go bust before they told us, after various excuses about why wages weren't paid. My opinion of them isn't high. 'Manage their way out of', and 'wet paper bag' spring to mind..."

I acquired the phone number for a D. Isaac and a Stewart D. Bell, in Warminster. Phoning up I got hold of a woman, and politely asked if she was Deborah Isaac from ICE Software. She hung up. Next day I phoned again and asked about ICE Software, and the woman whispered to a man in the background: "It's that guy asking about ICE Software again." After which I heard the man in the background scream: "TELL HIM TO FUCK OFF!!!" They hung up.

So there you have it, readers. Is it any wonder Akira on the Amiga ended up being so appallingly shit when you have people like that in charge of it?

Like Charlequin said, Chair kinda wrote around it and aren't necessarily in agreement with OSC.

Just to be clear, Chair the company are based in Utah so I wouldn't assume they're in the clear personally; however, they are quiet about their positions whatever they are and weren't above hiring PAD to do the script so I wouldn't assume anything negative automatically either.

The Fez guy!

Politics. Says politics right in the title.

I try to separate it where I can. I mean, I'm not going to actively support someone who is homophobic, racist, sexist or a horrible person but if I've bought the game before knowing that then I'm not going to let that hinder my enjoyment of the game. I may choose not to buy future games that person has worked on but I'm not going to let it impact my enjoyment of a game.

i don't delve too much into the developer's lives or views when i play games, but if i do know that they're shitty people, i'll be aware of it when playing/paying for their games. whatever that means.

on the other side of the coin, i loved playing Bioshock because ken levine, so i guess i can refuse to play a game because the guy is a douche or he tries to push his political agenda, in a negative way.

that comment about homosexuality by a poser above was odd...consider reflecting on what made you say that

Used to be a fan of Stardock until they sold Impulse to Gamestop, dropped their DRM-free stance in favor of a Steam requirement for all their games, and then Brad Wardell turned out to be a jerk and a gamergater so...yeah, done with that company.

oh shoot, totally misread the article at that point. Thanks for the heads up, edited my post to reflect it.

This video gets posted all the time, so it's a shame that it's actually extremely dumb.

If you don't include a creator's politics in your judgment of something, then that's totally valid, but there's this revisionist narrative going on trying to excuse Phil Fish for his behavior or otherwise insist that he's not a jerk at all. But nobody provoked Phil Fish to say that PCs are "meant for spreadsheets," and nobody provoked him to brag to PC gamers about how many sales the PC version was getting despite his comments. Nobody provoked him to tell someone that his entire nation's creative output sucked. Nobody prompted him to tell people to kill themselves or make death threats at his business partner.

Explaining this away as the actions of someone who wasn't meant for the spotlight being thrust into it is operating under the (even more insulting to him) assumption that Phil can't be responsible for his own actions. What wound up happening to Phil was inexcusable and I wouldn't wish that on anybody, but the fact remains that Phil Fish was a bully. He was a bully of his own choices and his own volition. Even if we ignore the things he did that were overexaggerated reactions, he went out of his way to hurt people completely unprompted on multiple occasions.

For the record, I played Fez and enjoyed it. There are developers I won't deal with due to their thoughts and actions anymore, though. Randy Pitchford continually lied to his playerbase to attract sales, I fell for them, and I won't anymore. I won't buy games from any developer that associates themselves with Gamergate (Running With Scissors, Spicy Horse/American McGee, whoever made Huniepop). And David Cage can basically just fuck off.

i have no idea who Zoe Quinn is; should i play the game she made ?

i dont really want to get into this but can someone post a brief summry of whats the deal with this dev
