Pokémon Sun & Moon | Info and speculation thread

That's a shame that they haven't shown any new megas, I don't want them to be a dropped feature after Game Freak spent forever hyping them up. It would be interesting for a pokemon to get both however.
I think they'll add new megas in the remakes and third version of each gen (i.e. Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, etc). Same for regional forms. They're a great way to add new mons without increasing the pokedex.

You say this like third versions are still a thing.

Amd Gen 5 was fantastic. The game Diamond and Pearl should have been. I'm not touching the Sinnoh remakes but the Unova remakes in 2024? I'm there.

I need to find out if taking off Type: Null's mask would be extremely painful.

We already have a Bane Pokemon.

CoroCoro has started leaking...

TBH, I wish we had a different type than Poison/Dark for Alola!Grimer, but it is a type combo that's not particularly common, so I can't give it too much flack.

This is like the worst possible direction they could have gone in for an Alolan Grimer/Muk.

Lava Muk or Sand Muk or Water Muk were cool ideas. This is just green slime instead of purple goo. Ugh.

Seems like a lot of the alolans have dark typing (Rattata line, Grimer, Meowth), so I wonder if these are found in a particular area. By that I mean the same way you find rock types in caves and ice types in... icy caves.

Agree that there are more exciting ways you could do Grimer, but I'll wait until we see Muk (if it has an alolan form) to see if they're going somewhere with it.

Sand Muk would kinda be a rehash of the Sandyghast line imo and Slugma already has blobl of lava covered. I don't see water working either tbh, but I do agree I wish they had been a bit more creative with this.

Good for competitive, though - Dark/Poison is a fantastic defensive typing and Muk's always had reasonably good stats. Could bump it up a tier or two.

EDIT: The design is ugly as all sin, though. Why the weird yellow jaw?

So here's an updated list of non-mega Kanto Pokemon we haven't seen yet,

Yeah the competitive usage will be interesting for Muk. If they buff it's stats even a bit it could become a pretty interesting threat. Straight up upgrade to normal Grimer line.

Oops I meant to say Mud. Poison/Ground filthy brown muck would have been interesting and still fitting of its name.

Looks like Sun and Moon playtest reports might be coming through soon- Tom Phillips, the editor of Eurogamer, tweeted out a non-existent article about the first two hours of the game about an hour ago.

Gamexplain has a video on youtube now that has some impressions from 2h trial too, watched it and wouldnt call it spoilery, that eurogamer had some spoilers if you combine it with the information from gamexplain though! I hope the demo doesnt get shown before its released on any streams, better to just play then watch!

Gen 6 is my favorite generation due to QoL features alone. I just need to battle speed to get back to Gen 5 levels and we'll be Gucci.

All of the Pokemon to give a new form to and they choose Grimer. Lordy.

That's part of the idea, I think---Pokemon who haven't gotten anything since their inception. So far none of the Alola forms got a new evolution post Gen I or a Mega, the closest is Raichu getting a new member of his family in Pichu but that's not a direct power boost to him.

On that note I don't think any of the recently re-Typed Fairy Pokemon will get Alola variants since they just got a "fresh" update.

Going to be interesting to see what happens with those if the VC transfer rumors are true. Will they retain their original typings without a design difference or will they look distinct somehow?

If we exclude those, along with the ones with evolutions in future generations, we're left with:

Ekans line
Nidoran Male line
Nidoran Female line
Venonat line
Diglett line
Bellsprout line
Geodude line
Ponyta line
Farfetch'd
Doduo line
Seel line
Krabby line
Voltorb line
Hitmonlee
Hitmonchan
Koffing line
Omanyte line
Kabuto line

I removed Jynx as well because its existence will never be acknowledged again.

I'm reserving judgment for when I know its character concept. Right now I don't "get" the idea behind its design.

It's probably either based on engine oil mixed with water or a regular Grimer that absorbed some sulfur.

I wonder if they'll do Alolan Omanyte and Kabuto in place of a traditional fossil addition this gen

Why would Pokemon that are extinct get a regional variant in the place of a fossil? If it happens then they'd probably use the rock typing that all fossils have and thus no longer be fossil Pokemon.

I mean I'm still saying they'd be fossil Pokemon. Just that instead of new fossils you'd get a choice between Helix and Dome fossil again, but this time they revive into how those Pokemon were like in the Alola region.

I hope not, it was already annoying when the Kanto Birds were reused for Kalos legendary trio.

Well it's possible that there's new fossil Pokemon and they haven't shown them off, but given how liberal they've been with sharing new Pokemon and how we haven't seen any new fossil mons it makes me wonder. We can make the assumption there's a fossil revival mechanic still in because Tirtouga and Aerodactyl have shown up in gameplay.

I'd love to see Koffing and Ekans get Alola Variants and then Team Rocket end up getting them in the show.

From that list though...here are my thoughts...

Ekans line - A popular Pokemon rumored to get an Alolan variant, Fighting has been a popular suggestion though Water is also popular, I definitely think we'll see this. Also the fact that Arbok was doing the regional variant thing since Gen II means things would be coming full circle. Also its classic Version counterpart Sandshrew got one.

Nidoran Male line
Nidoran Female line
- So far we only have two-stage Alola Pokemon, but if Game Freak are ambitious to redesign an entire line I feel like these guys would be the most likely candidate. I don't know how they'd be redesigned necessarily, but they're Pokemon I consider popular and unpopular at the same time (classic Pokemon everyone knows, but don't appear much nowadays in large roles) and an update would be neat. Alternatively I could see Nidoqueen and Nidoking having exclusive Z-Moves that summons the other to assist like Eevee's Z-Move.

Venonat line - One of the first Alola variants that sprung to mind for me was "why not make VenomothPsychic-type?" since I always thought perhaps it was intended to be at one point since Sabrina used one. I hope we get Bug/Psychic, especially since oddly enough it's still an unused Type Combination.

Diglett line - We know Diglett is in the game since one Japanese trailer has Team Skull mentioning it, but we haven't seen it. I find that interesting, and this is another Alola variant people really wanna see. My idea was something silly like Ground/Grass resembling a flower, or a star-nosed mole.

Bellsprout line - Once considered a rival to Oddish since then Oddish "won" with an additional evolution, Belossom itself being almost a "variant" of Gloom one could say, Victreebel getting revenge so to speak would be nice---only issue is I think Victreebel already looks like something that would be hanging out in Alola as is.

Geodude line - Two of the classic Link Evolutions got Megas, but Machop and Geodude were left out. I don't think we've seen Machop in-game, but we've seen a regular Machoke on an in-game poster so I don't think it's been totally disqualified. Geodude is a Pokemon I can see them going in a variety of ways, perhaps a Rock/Water one that's more muddy, or like a Rock/Fire volcanic rock. Would Alola Graveller still evolve via Trade I wonder, or a different method?

Ponyta line - When you think of riding Pokemon, isn't it a bit odd that the perfect candidate is nowhere to be seen? This is one of Generation I's most boring Pokemon in my opinion and it deserves something.

Farfetch'd - My dream Mega Farfetch'd is the leek itself evolving, not the Pokemon, and likewise I'd love to see Alola Farfetch'd be the exact same Pokemon but armed with a tropical fruit like a banana.

Doduo line - There was a rumor about a Fighting/Flying Doduo, so I imagined a cassowary-inspired one with sharp claws to allow it to move fast through the Alola jungles. I hope we see that, since I more or less guessed Dark Rattata.

Seel line - Water/Ground Dewgong which is, well, a Florida-style dugong. It writes itself. The dullest Gen I Pokemon, it deserves something I guess.

Krabby line - Don't really see it happening, to be honest. Crabrawler seems to fill our crab quota this time and I don't see them wasting a slot on another, though we are getting two cat-based Pokemon in Litten and Alola Meowth so it could still happen. Maybe one of those crabs where they have the samurai face?

Voltorb line - Voltorb and Electrode based on one of the other monster balls is so obvious and easy to do, but I think Game Freak might skip over that.

Hitmonlee
Hitmonchan
- Though they didn't directly receive an evolution, they received a new member in Hitmontop and thus I don't really see them getting variants when they sort of already work as variants of one another. I could see signature Z-Moves though.

Koffing line - The Team Rocket fan in me wants to see Alola Koffing, Alola Ekans, and Alola Meowth---not related to the show the grunts also used Rattata and Grimer a lot, so Koffing would basically give Team Skull a whole team of Kanto goons to use. Poison/Fire based on a volcanic vent works. Or maybe Poison/Flying, with Koffing taking on a disguise that makes it look like Minior?

Omanyte line
Kabuto line
- Don't know if I see extinct Pokemon getting variants since they probably wouldn't adapt, though I guess they could've adapted before dying out. I'd love to see Wild Fossil Pokemon living on some uninhabited island, a "variant" of sorts. I guess there's your idea for an Alola variant right there, pure-Water Omanyte and Kabuto that didn't die out.

Cross-posting from CoroCoro thread

So I tallied up some stuff:

  • We currently know of 59 new Pokemon (Alola forms discluded from count)
  • Only 50 have been officially revealed, 9 of them are only known through common knowledge or small slips
  • X/Y had officially revealed 41 Pokemon (Mega forms discluded from count)

Work

It's definitely looking like Gen VII is bigger than Gen 6, but I don't think you can definitely say for sure how much bigger it's going to be based on this and I'm not really sure you can trust any rumor
(although I do think the 85 rumor is probably closer, which is kinda sad given how before Gen 6, there were always at least 100)
. The fact that we have another info dump on Friday means we'll probably get one or two more Pokemon, but I think that might be it for the dumps after this next one.

If I had to speculate on which new Pokemon are still going to evolve I'd probably pick Komala, Salandit, Wimpod, Minior, and Morelull.

Since the starting town is Hauori City, I'm guessing that you start at/go to the Honolulu expy before going to the village location to get your starter which seems kinda interesting. Reminds me a bit of D/P/Pt where you don't really own your starter until you go to Sandgem Town. I do kinda wonder how they'll handle that though since we do know you pick your starter there, whereas you still picked it right outside your starting town in Gen IV

I thought that might be the case, but Illima sounds like a more feminine name so I kinda just went with that.

Ok so looking at the most recent Chinese Riddler compilation image from the last update:

riddlerdex3.jpg

Notice how there is a staff next to Jangmo-O that looks very similar to its final evolution's tail. Could that be what it was referring to?

Though also notice there is no Grimer in the lower section, same with Rattata. Does that mean these Pokemon are in the game, yet DON'T get Alolan forms? What does the faded mean then? THE RIDDLES

I can't believe DexNav is not coming back :(

Yeah this is an absolute bummer. I really hope there's an alternative to the "area tracker"; thanks to that I was actually interested in collecting Pokemon. Never been much of a fan of catching Pokemon just to have them, but I loved filling in the sprites on the dexnav.
