My Beef with Summer Lesson

Oh, come on. The police system is part of the fun of GTA, and have you really never gone on a murderous rampage in AC, or tried to see how many murders you could get away with before anyone noticed?

This kind of stuff is rampant in Western games, but almost non-existent in Japanese ones, and yet it's the Japanese games which are objectionable? SMH.
You literally can't go on a murderous rampage in AC, because the second you do this is what pops up:
WARNING:THIS ANCESTOR DID NOT KILL CIVILIANS

The police system, (and any guard system), exists solely to deter that sort of behavior in games, it's why they kill you super easily. Western games have these things much more often than Japanese because the game systems aren't reduced to binary states and are much more systemic than Japanese games which are incredibly simple in comparison when it comes to systemic open world gameplay.

"still very much idealized as a beauty."

About Melissa McCarthy?

I mean I like her as an actress but this is in no way even in the ballpark of her career. It isn't like people saw Spy for the fucking poster.

Saying that may have been a bit to much, my point being is, that she was still made more attractive than what she normally looks like irl because attractive people sell better than normal looking or even ugly ones.

Why is it OK just because they're adults? Do you need then to be able to give consent before killing then?
Because your comparing this kinda game to a GTA kind of game.

The key difference here is this features a, and I'm using posters words here "cute" "attractive" underage girl.

You wouldn't have half as many people calling you a creepy perv if this "game" featured adults. But it doesn't. It features an underaged girl.

Yeah. There is nothing clearly sexualised about the portrayal of this schoolgirl.

It's pointless having a discussion about this when folks are deliberately ignoring the reality of this game.

Dude. Maybe take a look at the actual game and not just some marketing materials.
Nothing makes the player look at her from those angles.

It's hardly normal behavior for a teacher to be playing dress up with a schoolgirl in her bedroom
You choose an outfit you unlock after some playthroughs. And you can only change outfits before the actual game starts.

I honestly don't see what Dylan's trying to discuss anymore because you seem to have already decided that's fucked up and nothing could convince you.

I feel like one feels this way because the dating genre is new to them (and this is a dating sim, which is a far cry from rape sim). Dating sims have existed a long time ago and technology is only getting better and better, that the logical next step is to bring it to VR. So when the wider audience suddenly have exposure to this genre with VR they think it is disgusting, as compared to those who have been playing the normal dating sims and LovePlus, that this is the logical next step for them.

Hypothetically, let's say you have only played cute, non violent puzzle games in all your life. And suddenly one day you found out Call of Duty. I bet you would have the same adverse reaction, like people who play all these games about killing each other online is disgusting.

Have you actually played the game? Or are you just judging the game and others with this gif and other promotion videos, just like OP did?

I love how everyone reduces the entire game to this single gif. There are multiple people in this thread who have played the game and given first hand impressions on how tame and non-sexual it is.

I really enjoyed Summer Lesson and don't really know where OP is coming from with this. Playing the game would probably help as it has a great sense of atmosphere and the character is really well done. I do think this is exhibit A why this game would never come West though. People just can't understand stuff like this.

Ok, explain why you think they would market the game like that? I thought the devs didn't know what they were doing?

No, the argument is that someone finds games with romance and/or sex enjoyable, and no one is getting hurt. That is why they should be made.

If you find it weird, don't play them. But until you can find me some sort of proof that playing dating sims makes you into a sexual predator, I don't really care about your opinion of my tastes in entertainment.

There are white supremists games that are designed around killing people of color. THose games, reprehensible as they are, should be allowed to exist and be played. They're just games and no one is getting hurt.

However, don't act like it's not reasonable to atleast question what kind of person would have that particular fantasy or whether overt acceptance of such a fantasy in normal social circles wouldn't have negative effects in the due to the perpetuation of that fantasy.

So can someone provide some examples from the game that show how its about "schoolgirl grooming" or a "perv" game?
I genuinely want to know and have no idea. From what I hear from people that have played it, theres nothing like that in the game itself

.

Have you never gone into a thread about DoaX3? The characters in that are all 18+ and it still had tons of people talking about "creepy" it was.

So why should it matter then, what you think is this game about? It's obviously a cute school girl from Japan which wants a teacher. Nothing more. Guess what? School girls wear uniforms in Japan all the time and even try to put their skirts up more if they can. It's creepy how many people sexualize a normal looking videogame girl. Where was that shit with Lara?

Well they created situations and animations where the girl reacts to you trying to look under her skirt. If they wanted to make a purely education-themed experience, I doubt such viewing angles/reactions from the gamer character were necessary.

BAKA SENSEI!

The gif he keeps linking is from a concept video in 2014, it's completely irrelevant. Though I don't think he has any interest in objective truth here.

If such animations and situations have been indeed removed from the game, then I admit my tone is wrong. They might've actually removed all the possibilities to creep due to internal/external pressure.

Have you never fucked up a bunch of civilians in San Andreas so you could fight the army and dozens of tanks in an amazing action fest of explosions?

Cos that - i assure you - is what most people playing these games do.

That is, quite factually so, the main reason GTA in its current form even exists lol.

Sorry, been a long time since I played an AC game. Still, you can kill tons of guards unprovoked, people just doing their job, and no, they're not hard to fight in a group. At least they weren't in AC2. Haven't played it since.

It still doesn't change the fact that GTA is exactly like I describe it. It's not to deter you, it's to create a challenge. Otherwise, why make it so much fun? You shouldn't have a chance against twenty cops.

Oh, and what I meant is that Japanese games very rarely have realistic violence. I wasnt talking about police systems.

For fuck's sake people

SHE WEARS A FRENCH MAID OUTFIT AT ONE POINT

This is beyond "friendship simulator." It is Love Plus for VR (as a side note... how is there not a Love Plus VR yet?). It is solely targeted to the teenage (and teenagers at heart) otaku crowd. It is basically the Skinimax of video games.

It's not my jam, but there is clearly an audience for these types of games. Dating sims have a long history in Japan, including dating sims where you play as a woman and try to attract men. So at least they're diverse in that respect. So let's not treat Summer Lesson as some innovative piece of software the deserves an indepth analysis, it is basically a souped version of those old PCEngine dating games.

Everyone who has played it has said you are wrong and yet you continue beating this drum.

No, it features a collection of polygons resembling an underage girl, written by adults, voices by an adult, played by adult, hurting NO ONE.

What's wrong with engaging in a harmless fantasy? I don't think GTA is wrong either, I just find the disconnect between how violence and sex are treated in the west sad.

Well if your school uniform had a 5cm miniskirt then I have news for you...

I reserve my judgement on footage, not impressions from people who play these kinds of games lol.

Then why not actually watch release code footage instead of reposting a 2 year old gif as fact?

Now I am in the middle of my first viewing of Black Mirror on Netflix, so it might explain my line of thinking, but with what little I know of Summer Lessons, it seems to me that what you can do with the game will reflet more about yourself than what the game is meant to be/ not to be. And maybe it's even the point underneath the official pretense?

Of course it's in one's own private environment, so it's really up to everyone to deal with their own morals/ comfort zone.

If anything, in my opinion, the girl's reactions are merely acknowledging that some (many?) people will go there (voyeurism), whether the game would be meant for it or not. (and apparently the game has mechanisms in play to prevent peeking?).

Sooo... Maybe the OP is uncomfortable with a game that has the potential to reveal more about some of its users than they'd be comfortable to admit to?

Is trying to groom a virtual schoolgirl a harmless fantasy?

Schoolgirls in Japan actually often adjust the length of their skirt to be shorter than regulation because they think it looks good. That's pretty realistic. Most school regulations stipulate a fairly long minimum length, but many girls only have it like that when walking in the school gate in the morning, then it gets adjusted.

Yes.

Now we're getting to the core of the matter.

Perhaps those who feel discomfort playing the role of a teacher in a teenage girls bedroom would care to explain the thoughts they experience which leads them to this level of disgust?

Is shooting virtual people a harmless fantasy?

Yes.

It happens in SEA too. The students their self is the one who make it shorter as being too long is just lame for the student.

Then you should stop shit like this. You haven't even played it yourself and call out people that actually played it. What is your problem? For you, everyone is a creep that plays or played it. WTF

Is shooting virtual people a harmless fantasy?

I don't know why folks try to think this there is some sort of equivalence with murdering people and being a pedo. They are completely seperate.

I keep waiting for people to post evidence of this 'grooming' gameplay mechanic.

Is it upcoming DLC that isn't in the game yet? Pre-order bonus?

You say harmless fantasy. To me though, this veers a little too close to being attracted to children.

Underaged girls shouldn't be a fantasy period. And all games and media like this that sexualise kids do is reinforce the creeps Into thinking these fantasies are harmless and innocent "I'm just teaching her" when actually there may he something inherently wrong with them.

"I'm not hurting anyone" is a bullshit excuse. Being attracted to children isn't a harmless normal thing.

No. The game looks like a creep simulator to me, but the people who play it can play it however they want.

Well it's not like I approve of girls having to wear short skirts while boys can wear trousers anyways. That's a relic from ancient times.

Is shooting virtual people a harmless fantasy?

No. Now answer his question instead of trying to divert the issue :)

No, I don't do those things, I see why others do it. But the game contextualizes the vast majority of the canon depictions of violence.

Guards in AC:Unity were harder than they've ever been.

Publishers do that.
Who do you think makes those animations and camera angles? That trailer wasn't outsourced.

I don't know why folks try to think this there is some sort of equivalence with murdering people and being a pedo. They are completely seperate.
Especially when one is much more of a fantasy, like say the laughably fast police response times. And the other is much more grounded in reality with horrible implications. They're absolutely separate, and AS FUCKING IF any of the people going b-b-but violence give two shits about virtual violence whatsoever. It's such a transparent attempt at deflection.

I don't know why folks try to think this there is some sort of equivalence with murdering people and being a pedo. They are completely seperate.

Separate lol. The fact that u tries to picture someone being pedo for just playing game shows how bad ur mind is going there.

Again, going by that logic, u should call those playing game like Mortal Kombat as sadist human who loves gore and psycho.

Those who plays CoD is serial killer.

and etc. But u won't because fanservice is worst while killing had no problemo.
