You know damn well why.
Its 2016 (or 2017 when this comes out). Women are more than half of the population and make up more than 40% of gamers. There are numerous historical women outlaws and gunfighters.

Zero excuse at all.

The story they want to tell has no woman in it? Many of my most beloved movies or games don't involve men or the other way around.

I understand what you're saying. i'm talking about a female with group of guys, in a gang, just doesn't fit the setting for me.

What if you allowed something novel to change the way you think about things instead of relying solely on your existing preferences to decide with certainty what you will like and dislike?

Can I get a role call for folks hyped for RDR2 Online as much or more than the story? As much as I loved GTAV's single player campaign I've spent far more time in Online over the years, and love it to bits. Can't wait to see what they have in mind for RDR Online, though I suspect that won't be the focus at all for Thursday.
I'm in this boat if it's as amazing as gtaV I'm so in

Shame it's not set in the modern day, or near future. Ahh well.

It just feels like the easy title. I know that it will bring a lot more attention and sale because the last one was received so well so it's smart in that regard. Just feels a little lazy? For lack of a better word

It's not lazy because it's not that thard to think of a word that starts from RE to make a new title.

I wonder if Red Dead Online will be launched few weeks after Read Dead Redemption 2 like they did with GTA online and GTA V.

Because Rockstar will get millions of people to double-dip this way. I wouldn't even expect a PC announcement until early 2018.

They also avoid piracy which is at least a resoning that has been given by publishers/devs at times. Not saying I agree but that it is seemingly a reservation amongst some publishers. Or, hopefully, it means that they do not want to outsource porting the game but also do not feel they can develop the pc-version simultaneously.

Or it's the double-dipping thing. Could go alongside an updated version for PS4 Pro / Scorpio and their learnings from GTA V probably have not been too discouraging towards this MO. :D

I'm already curious on how different the Scorpio and PS4 Pro version would look.
Because the specs are far apart.

I wish they would release the PC version at launch, but I bet they want to make money by making people by the console version first, then double dip the PC version a year later.
Just like what they did with GTA5.

If she's as ruthless and violent as them, why not?

I feel like it's a difficult thing to portray realistically.

Either you show that situation honestly, with a tone of belittlement and sexism, at which point that might detract from the story you actually want to tell and get claims of unfair treatment of characters thrown at the creators, or you get the Hollywood 'two guys are shooting at bottles on a fence, then the female character comes along and knocks all the bottles down with one bullet while firing from the hip, and the male characters look dumbfounded at eachother' ugh-ness.

I can see why it might just be avoided entirely.

Still sad we didn't really get any substantial SP DLC for GTA V... guessing it'll be the same here. Gonna be hard to top the greatness of the last game.

Probably going to do what they did for GTAV and release it on consoles first, and then PC. With GTAV it made some sense as they released the PC version and the 'next gen' remasters around the same time so make use of higher res assets in both.

This time around the timing doesn't make as much sense, but it's not surprising. I think Rockstar has released almost every major game on consoles first, then PC. At least, GTAIII, VC, SA, IV, V followed this. RDR, famously, never got a PC release due to technical issues, and IIRC Max Payne was simultaneous, but Max Payne was a big PC franchise originally.

That's what I'm thinking. Like they would just port it over later. PC gamers will have to wait Luke they've always have but it's not port begging... That's so weird.

I agree that Redemption 2 may not be the most creative but if it does tie in with the previous game, then its understandable. I will disagree that just replacing the last word with something like Retribution, or Requiem or Resurrection or Revelations makes it better, more like it sounds like a crappy sequel to tired action or horror film franchise released in the late 90s

From a marketing standpoint it makes so much more sense, especially considering Red Dead became a household name only with the release of Redemption.

I agree. Especially if it ends being a prequel as some are claiming. It makes a lot sense from a pure marketing standpoint, but it does come across as somewhat lazy.

In any case, I'm glad it's coming! First one was amazing, lets hope this one is too!

Also you better get a comboy hat for the videos, when the time comes! :P

Yeah agreed! Im incresibly excited for ot regardless but I liked he idea of "R" titles in succession instead of just "2".

It also diminishes Revolver slightly by making it the stand out instead of a trio of games. Like when the 3rd Batman movie went for "The Dark Knight" type of title again.

Its a somewhat inconsequential and petty complaint but still :P

Who said they are a minority, I'm a married man with 3 daughters and you expect me to think they are a minority? My ass is dominated by woman, lol.

Who was in his "gang" back then and who would have been in his social circle. The point is, would they need that much diversity within his gang to be acceptable?

Again, this is all just based off the artwork and we have yet to see a single clip of the game yet.

Honestly, I hate how people and entities try to force characters into video games stories these days.

"Zero excuse"... So you're saying that someone creating a piece of art literally doesn't have the right to deliver their own vision? Obviously you're not referring to any actual legal requirements as there are none, so you must be saying there is some kind of universal moral imperative that any creator must obey regardless of what they actually feel like making?

I cannot stand this kind of entitled attitude. "How dare anyone create something that doesn't prescribe to my particular sensibilities!" Here's the thing: you can absolutely be disappointed if it's not what you wanted. Everyone has preferences, and you should absolutely tell a company that you are interested in (your preferred experience here). They might even do that at some point. But there is a difference between saying "I'm super disappointed this doesn't have a female protagonist! I would have really liked that" and "Fuck you dev you slimy racist bastards how dare you make the game you want and not the one I want!". That's the problem. The complaint is always that it's wrong that they didn't make what you wanted, which is the definition of entitlement.

This angers me because I want to have the freedom to make what I want to make. I don't want to be yelled at because I told a story that was on my heart, but it wasn't exactly what someone else would have created. The greatest works of art come from creators expressing their visions, because it's a story they have to tell, a picture they have to paint, music they have to write.

There is a TON of media that doesn't interest me. Things like the Saw movies disgust me. I think the world would probably be better off without that, so should I campaign to have those banned? Should I form an oversight committee to govern the direction of a sequel so that it's something I want? Or should I leave the creative direction to the people who actually wanted that to begin with?

Rockstar committed a grave sin here by releasing a picture that only has men in it, which means this is clearly going to be a horrible sexist game, right? So I'm curious. Would you go back in time and complain about Seven Samurai because the leads are men? I mean, that's seven lead characters and they are all men. That's bad, right? And yet, for some reason, as summarized by Wikipedia:

It almost seems like it might have actually been a good movie with a good story despite starring only men. How about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? Some of the greatest, most influential works of fiction in history, and they predominantly star men. Do you know why? Because these are the stories and the characters that the creators wanted to create.

Here's the truth: there are a lot of video games, that feature all manner of characters. Are there not as many representing what you are looking for? Here's an idea. Don't demand a creator change their vision to match yours. Instead of bitching about it, go make the game you want. That's what I'm doing. I will enjoy what media I enjoy, and will add what I think is missing.

Thanks for this post

i still think that'd simply make for bad branding and just create confusion. They clearly want people new to the series look at Redemption, and redemption only, when hyping themselves up for the new game. Imagine the amount of people who'd try to 'get into the series' by playing Revolver first - that's actually a deterrence.

I get why they're doing it, but they really don't need to...Rockstar is known by the world as the makers of GTA, and Red Dead Redemption. The brand recognition, the logo, and of course the first two words of the game "Red Dead..R..." would be more than enough for potential consumers to know what this product was gonna be.

Calling it Redemption 2 is playing it safe, but they're in the position to do whatever the fuck they want.

It would be neat to have a multicultural ensemble of characters but an all-white posse is also good for me.
I leave *R all the freedom they need.
They will totally nail the story regardless

My ideal magnificent 7-ish posse
-Irish
-Chinese
-Black
-North US white
-South US white
-native american
-a Priest of some kind

Just follow the template of history. That's the easiest thing to do

How did so many people get confused into thinking PS4 Pro was a post-release option? PS4 Pro must be supported at launch to release on PS4 platforms at all

Without a doubt.

GTA V has 5.6 million owners on Steam, and hasn't ever been on sale for less than $36. Assuming a $50 average sale price and 30% for Valve, that's $196 million in revenue before accounting for any GTA Online spend. There's no question that the PC version was enormously profitable for Rockstar (even if not quite as insanely profitable as the console versions), and I'm sure the inevitable PC version of RDR2 will also be profitable for them.

My guess for the initial release being confined to PS4/XBO is one or both of the following:

- Wanting to have as many staff as humanly possible focussed on polishing the PS4 and XBO versions (particularly with two different hardware configs for each).

- Hoping to catch some double-dippers buying the game first on console and then on PC a year later.

Wait... so, the first RDR took place during the last days of the old west, right? Now, if this sequel's MC is john marshton's son (jack), then RDR2 would take place 20 years later!

Would there still be an old west by that point??

There is no way in hell this comes close to 60 FPS on either console.

The Scorpio could surely run an open world game at ~60fps though... if you aren't playing it in 4K, then the specs stated would definitely be able to run a game at 1080p/60fps.

Just to be clear, I mean only the Pro/Scorpio: although I do remember someone from Sony saying that they won't do 60fps for the Pro, and not the PS4....so maybe I'm talking bollox haha.

This makes me think, what's the use of having a beefed up system (Pro/Scorpio) if you can't bump the fps up to 60? Seems kind of mental to me.

Either way, pumped for RDR2, Marston origin story ahoy!

Why would you assume there are no women in the game? Marston's wife and Bonnie were both awesome.

I'm speaking in general terms. People bringing up the 3 Musketeers or The Godfather, or western tropes. It's not hard to figure out why women and minorities have been relegated to supporting roles in most of these stories. And yes it's Rockstar game they can do what they want, and no we don't know a single thing about RDR2 yet, but it's 2016, and representation across the board is a huge topic in the world right now, and especially in mainstream America, so these questions will keep being asked.
