This is a Nintendo console. I.e., you'll have the privilege of rebuying the games again.
 
Is there any info on how the controllers work? I would think you need like 3 separate battery compartments, one for the screen and the other two for detached controllers.

Look at the images in the OP, particularly the one where they're adding a cartridge. It looks thinner than the Wii U gamepad. If you're considering "thick" to mean, than pure tablets on the market right now, then sure, but that isn't what this is.

Perhaps $250 is possible. $200 is crazy. Nintendo is selling the 3DS XL at $200 right now. $300 seems much more likely for a new piece of technology with a much higher resolution screen. Perhaps they've somehow managed to create a relatively unique piece of technology with super cheap components, but given that this doesn't look like anything else on the market right now, I don't see how we're reaching bottom of the barrel prices.

I liked this announcement a lot. The video was nice, clear and relaxed and I think dropping a video like this without the overindulgence of spending a long press conference on it with all the typical buzzwords feels quite refreshing.

This thing will definitely be a premium device, though, and for now targeted at home console owners. It's referred to as a "home gaming system", after all, despite it clearly being designed to be both a home console and portable. They probably intend to use the 3DS as their "portable budget offering" for a while, and then ease it out as they can drop the price on the Switch and perhaps introduce different versions of it.

I'm guessing $299 at launch, and not a dollar lower.

Mario Kart was different to MK8, so it's not the same game. Skyrim isn't on Wii U so no need for BC. What else? That Mario game was new.

If they do port games (Splatoon?), I at least hope digital Wii U games will carry over. I wouldn't expect it because it's not BC, it's new code.

I'm fine with paying a small upgrade fee, and they have that account thing with discounts now. I refuse to pay full price again though.

How's that?

Being competitive with Sony and MS will require them to stick to their guns and actually have third-party support, which will be really difficult considering the potential low specs once again, and cartridges.

There's 4 shoulder buttons, or I misunderstood you?

I still don't know how the pressure-sensitive-and-clic triggers will be emulated for GC, thogugh, if they add GC to VC.
 
I think this system will sell just fine. The overall tone is surprisingly positive and the launch line up seems banging. I can't wait!
 
Interesting thing not shown in the trailer: motion controls/Wiimotes. Nintendo finally moving on from the Wii legacy and re-embtacing traditional control inputs?
 
I'm still enjoying the crow-eating from the many many commenters who insisted this wasn't a hybrid, despite it being the logical choice for Nintendo.

They didn't even add GC games to Virtual console on Wii U. I doubt they're going to do it here. Will be happily surprised if they do though.
 
I am so happy right now. This is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. The name is even growing on me.

Will sell tons if not too expensive.

Wow @ 3rd party early support. Hope it sticks. We got Skyrim so what's up with Elder Scrolls Online?

So not terribly excited. They showed off Mario, MarioKart, Splatoon and Zelda that can either be played on the Wii U or look like they would have no trouble running on the Wii U.

The Switch looks much more appealing as a successor to the 3ds. It's like if the 3ds was more like this at launch then I would never have bought a Wii U.

It's also appealing if this is indeed Nintendo's 1 platform to rule all them all and you won't have to get your panties in a bunch because a new mario or zelda game is on the handheld and not on the big screen system. That will be huge and likely get me to buy the system anyway.

And if you can still play wireless local multiplayer when docked then I might buy two or three.

I agree that this is a bit less tantalizing of a prospect for existing Wii U owners. But there's only 10 million of us. And we still can't take our games anywhere.

I think the library on this system will be good. I have a very good feeling about support now that Nintendo's development team isn't divided between two different pieces of hardware. If priced decently along with a decent launch lineup, I will be an early adopter.
 
Now I'm hyped. One of my biggest issues with the Wii U was the game pad having terrible battery life, and you really couldn't be too far from the TV to play on it. Plus, a few games didn't support remote play. Soon as they open it, I'm pre-ordering this sucker. I'll just deal with being broke after February and March 2017.
 
Nintendo doing the right thing, they do not need to throw a console with steroids just this console and get western support.

Finally we can play an Elders Scroll game on a Nintendo console , yep is a 5 years old game but this will be the first time you can take your adventure on a plane or hotel room.

This is not a mobile device is a portable home console.
 
Looks like what Wii U should have been.

I wonder if Nintendo will have a Switch Pro model.
Aluminium body, 1080p screen, 5000mah battery, water resistance etc. Cater to the crowd that buys iPhones and Galaxys, but who wants a complete console on the go experience.

Switch is just too plain and obvious. I can literally picture the marketing team writing down every word that describes the controllers and the thought of them ending with "Switch" just boggles my mind.

Idk man, someone on GAF who is getting paid a lot less than the guy who came up with Wii U or Switch could come up with something a lot more creative..
 
The only thing I really don't like is the dock. My consoles are in a typical TV cupboard. Don't want to be knees on the ground rummaging around in a cupboard every time I Switch it Up®. I really hope they have some kind of streaming dongle somewhere down the line.
