Switch is just too plain and obvious. I can literally picture the marketing team writing down every word that describes the controllers and the thought of them ending with "Switch" just boggles my mind.

Nintendo Mix
Nintendo Shift
Nintendo Step

Idk man, someone on GAF who is getting paid a lot less than the guy who came up with Wii U or Switch could come up with something a lot more creative..

Because it can switch between a home and mobile console and switch between several configurations.

Shift makes 0 sense, Step as well makes 0 sense, mix... close but doesn't fit and sounds kinda confusing

The Xbox One barely recovered against the PS4. Asking Nintendo to make a generic console is like asking them to go 3rd party.

Which is a valid thing to ask if that's what you really want. But I don't think there's any room for 3 identical game consoles in the market anymore.

This is the least offensive gimmick they could have done. It's perfect for everybody. Don't really see a downside, you don't have to use it portable.

That's what this is. Why do you want features that won't have any affect on gameplay whatsoever removed? Yes, it's a gimmick but gimmicks are not inherently bad.

These features come with significant downsides. I can totally see why a lot of people like them, but I don't need them, so that's why I'm not that interested.

So uhm, what does the dock exactly do other than provide hdmi

The dock apparently also houses the Nvidia SOC, it's so Nintendo can release two bundles, fuck being able to switch. Some people are going to have the handheld and others just the dock lol.

Seriously though aside from the dock offering hdmi out and usb, the only other thing I could see it offering is storage that the handheld element connects to when docked.

The difference in performance that some people have managed to note from a youtube video (lol) is in my mind just the likely difference between the Nvidia SOC downclocking itself while handheld to increase battery life, and being docked it likely goes "full power" as battery life isn't a concern at that point.

The handheld element also charges at the same time as docked so when you're ready to go you've always got full charge.

I'm ultra happy and hyped for Nintendo Switch but my godness the dock with the screen in totally looks like a damn toaster!

It's pretty strange because for the first time a Nintendo console doesn't look very Nintendo which is a good change of pace but also pretty unusual.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
That logo is pretty slick. It has a Yin Yang type of vibe going on, almost like it represents both sides of gaming: both home and portable.

I'm so glad there's no dual screen or waggling controllers. It's still a gimmicky thing but it's one that's actually useful. I kind of like the name too. It's a little cheesy but it doesn't sound dumb like Wii.

Now we just need Animal Crossing and I'm good to fucking go.

possibly with 3DS, definitely not with Wii U

The Switch is obviously getting ports of the best Nintendo games on the Wii U, making backwards compatibility almost irrelevant.

Hopefully they have some sort of upgrade option for people who already own the Wii U version of those games though.

I like the name.

SO far the trailer makes me want to buy it as a companion device for my home consoles and pocket handheld devices.

Hoping this works out very well for nintendo. So is the DS not going to be a thing anymore? I'm kind of behind on these things.

It looks chunky, extra processing power perhaps?
It's odd they haven't mentioned anything about it other than I assume charging and hdmi output. I hope it does something than just be tidy.

The fact there were no kids in the video makes me think it will be priced closer to PS4's launch.
Bare minimum is 400 bucks. I hope they throw a game with that to ease the blow but who am I kidding.

Rockefellers. Skull and Bones. Microsoft. Al Qaeda. A Cabal of Bankers. The melting point of steel. What do these things have in common? Wake up sheeple, the landfill wasn't even REAL!
sadly It looks more like a prototype than a final version to me

Yup, I think the idea is to consolidate their library so you don't need Wii U and 3DS versions of every well selling game.

How's that?

Being competitive with Sony and MS will require them to stick to their guns and actually have third-party support, which will be really difficult considering the potential low specs once again, and cartridges.

Lol if you think cartridges matter in this day and age. Tehnology like SD cards are super fast and dirt cheap, they won't be the bottleneck on this system. What you wanted Blu rays on an handheld?

This pleases me. Day fucking 1 and looking forward to a next gen pokemon game and whatever else third parties can make from it.

I'm just really, REALLY glad they actually completely abandoned every trace of the DS and Wii brands and form factors. They really are completely moving on and that's a good thing. Goodbye clamshell and good riddance.

I'll really miss glasses-free 3D though. :( It was used really exceptionally well in Dragon Quest VII on 3DS, playing Dragon Quest XI without it will be disappointing.

Logo is hilariously big, but I otherwise don't have many complaints how the device looks. The controller shell thing is wacky looking with everything on it, though.

That's a classy looking console. I'm down, now nail everything else.

Give me the Souls trilogy
won't happen :(

The trailer shows off that that's for doing two player stuff like Mario Kart or NBA, it'll be fine for that. If you're playing something like Skyrim on the go you put them together into the full controller with both sticks

Clearly. Didn't even think of playing bigger games only using half the controller, but for smaller multiplayer things. Even with that it just isn't worth it to me for how awkward they look.

Dang it, they had to go with the xbox style joystick format, why not stick with the Wii U joysticks format. Besides that, everything looks up my alley. The only things stopping me is performance of the handheld and battery life.

Opposite for me for the joysticks. I love the change since I love the Xbox joystick placement.

I want one! But scared I would drop the console while taking it round with me.

I'm really hoping they release a case for it.

------

Overall, love everything I've seen. Just hope the screen is vibrant.

I wonder if it's going to have mid gen refreshes? Being essentially a tablet means it could get yearly refreshes like most do. I don't expect them that often, but now that consoles are in on that game how often should we expect?

I am highly skeptical, I worry that each component will have to have its own battery and all of the components, screen and controllers need to last a long while to be suitable as a portable

Im also skeptical that the portable aspect will limit the home games.

I worry battery life and console power go hand in hand and I worry they will limit eachother.

This tech is awesome but I also thinks it's less exciting than VR to me personally and I can't really justify buying both a switch and a VR headset.

I do really like the concept and I want it to succeed because I do like what Nintendo is doing, I am in awe on a purely technical level but slightly less excited as a practical gamer

In a weird way I'm really quite impressed with this thing. I'm a huge nintendo fan but never bought the Wii-U. I think I'll end up buying one of these, probably not long after launch.

This feels like a return to the vibe of Nintendo in the pre-gamecube era. Not sure why, because it's obviously a pretty crazy machine, every bit as weird as the Wii-branded stuff. But it feels more traditional anyway.

And the idea of playing games like Skyrim and Zelda on a portable makes it seem like a pretty high-tech device even though the graphics are obviously a little below the other two consoles.

Pretty cool. And the little glimpse of Mario looked awesome.

In fact, the next thing I want to see is a proper trailer for that Mario game.

I agree, I feel like similar to the Wii U Reveal Trailer, the device will actually look different somewhat in texture when it's actually released. I like the logo but I don't like it stamped in a big way on the front of the console, yet this does keep the words Nintendo and Switch in your mind so I can see them doing it as a way to keep the console within people's thoughts.
