Outside of wanting to play the ninty exclusives, I'm failing to see the appeal. Specs wise is this going to be like an Nvidia shield or something? Or a higher end surface? I could use any controller with a surface and use an HDMI cable for my TV right?

Unless this thing is significantly more powerful..... But I doubt it with the size?

Not trying to be Debbie downer but I'm confused.

bish gets all the credit :)
Looks okay I guess. That is a big honkin "portable" though. I have zero interest in taking that anywhere so I'll just have a compromised home experience.

Any indication if that screen is touch?

Wondering about use on WiiU... or if I have to buy a new WiiU Pad as backup.

I'll buy a new Pro controller if only because I hate the layout on the Wii U controller, but... why wouldn't it work? Just to push people buying new ones?

Now that I think about it, the Wii U did use classic controllers from the Wii and the Wii used GameCube controllers. It's possible.

The combined controller looks hideous. Reminds me of the DS Phat, in that it looks more like an ugly prototype for what would later be the refined Lite.

But I'm going to be playing this exclusively as a handheld so I'll thankfully never actually have to see it that way. After the Wii U disaster I was planning to go exclusively handheld for Nintendo games and the Switch makes that decision much more convenient. So glad I won't have to buy two Nintendo machines every gen anymore.

Now I'm hyped. One of my biggest issues with the Wii U was the game pad having terrible battery life, and you really couldn't be too far from the TV to play on it. Plus, a few games didn't support remote play. Soon as they open it, I'm pre-ordering this sucker. I'll just deal with being broke after February and March 2017.
Rumors are that the battery life isn't so good here, as well.

I don't understand people who think this will be (or needs to be) less than $299. $299-$349 is the same price as its immediate competitors, and between the portable/handheld combination and not needing to buy an extra controller for local multiplayer, AND probably continued free wi-fi gaming, it has more than enough features to hold its own at that price point.

Switch is just too plain and obvious. I can literally picture the marketing team writing down every word that describes the controllers and the thought of them ending with "Switch" just boggles my mind.

Nintendo Mix
Nintendo Shift
Nintendo Step

Idk man, someone on GAF who is getting paid a lot less than the guy who came up with Wii U or Shift could come up with something a lot more creative than Switch.

Don't like the name much either, but all of those words are basically identical lol.

I absolutely fucking love it. Day zero.

Name is decent enough, not at all upset about it.

GAF negativity won't get me down today!!

Wait, cartridge only means absolutely no physical backwards compatibility then, right?

Physical game owners gonna be pissed if it only recognizes your digital Wii U library.

Look at the images in the OP, particularly the one where they're adding a cartridge. It looks thinner than the Wii U gamepad. If you're considering "thick" to mean, than pure tablets on the market right now, then sure, but that isn't what this is.

Perhaps $250 is possible. $200 is crazy. Nintendo is selling the 3DS XL at $200 right now. $300 seems much more likely for a new piece of technology with a much higher resolution screen. Perhaps they've somehow managed to create a relatively unique piece of technology with super cheap components, but given that this doesn't look like anything else on the market right now, I don't see how we're reaching bottom of the barrel prices.
Well yeah. Might not be that portable for me then

Dang it, they had to go with the xbox style joystick format, why not stick with the Wii U joysticks format. Besides that, everything looks up my alley. The only things stopping me is performance of the handheld and battery life.

If that seriously works like it does in the trailer, where you slot the joy-cons in the tablet, take it out and the game switches over super fast, that will seriously impress me. I love gaming shit that just works like magic.

They didn't even add GC games to Virtual console on Wii U. I doubt they're going to do it here. Will be happily surprised if they do though.

In all fairness the Wii U is the same console that took years to get N64, which the Wii had day one. I'd say GC on NX is likely, at least, being considered.

The hardware design looks fine but the unit with controllers attached looks really big and the concept really isn't new it is just a Wii U-like pad with the hardware inside that can be docked for use with a TV.

Even in the the 3 1/2 minute video it showed that 90% of the time it is a handheld. All three times it was shown in home mode was just a means to show a lone person transitioning to HH/multi-player/social mode.

To market this as a home console that can also be used outside seems the wrong way round to me. For those that like HH though I can see why it appeals a lot. Unfortunately for me I'm just not a HH fan.

I also wonder about game prices. Closer to HH or console prices?

How's that?

Being competitive with Sony and MS will require them to stick to their guns and actually have third-party support, which will be really difficult considering the potential low specs once again, and cartridges.

Which will be solved if they have a big user-base with hungry gamers willing to purchase non-Nintendo games, which I believe they can do. This console has the same genesis as Wii to me.

I'm ultra happy and hyped for Nintendo Switch but my godness the dock with the screen in totally looks like a damn toaster!

If it's priced right I plan I buying 2 for sure. Possibly 3 for me and my kids.
That's the only downside, with Switch acting as a portable it'll be tough to only buy one console for a whole family.
Maybe they could sell the tablet separately at a lower price than the complete package?

Well yeah. Might not be that portable for me then

The whole thing Is fairly large given the size of the screen and using proper thumb sticks (thank god for that). The portability is going to be an open question for a lot of people. If you carry a bag with you, then probably fine, otherwise not so much.
