I don't get it. People say that a Nintendo console as powerful as PS4/Xbone would just be a Nintendo console that is no different from PS4/Xbone, but that doesn't make sense because you can't get Nintendo IP's on the other two platforms. It would stand out from PS4/Xbone simply because it's the only way you can play the latest Nintendo games.

So, uhmm.. does this mean I can't use my Wii U Pro Controller? I'm guessing backwards compatibility is dead in the water as well?

Doubt there will be Wii U Pro Controller support seeing as how there's a new Pro Controller, but not sure why this too much of an issue. A new console more often than not means having to buy a new controller. And they needed a clean break from the tangled web of supported controllers the Wii U had anyway.

And yes backwards compatibility was ruled out in the early NX reports awhile ago. I'm sure you'll probably see plenty of Wii U ports though, if Splatoon and the variation of Mario Kart 8 in the trailer are anything to go by. And Nintendo surely won't pass up the opportunity to implement Virtual Console.

I just don't see this having any legs outside Nintendo's fan base. The should just make a cellphone. Would reach more people.

This thing will launch at 349-399 with a $299 tablet only version for those that drop the thing or want a 2nd portable.

Good thing they have the classic Nintendo mini system arriving for Xmas.

Actually I am very pessimistic about this one because the retailer (Public.gr) doesn't use placeholder prices.
Well, see it the other way: what are the chances that Public.gr has an official price and not big outlets like Amazon?

Because you can be sure that if Amazon had the price, preorders would be open now...

I'm not exactly sure where you're going with this.

The name sucks... Hey do you have the Switch, a Switch... wtf Nintendo?? The idea is good if there is good 3rd party support and decent hardware in it I would buy it.
The name is the only thing I'm 100% sold on. First Nintendo home console name that isn't WTFy since Nintendo 64.

I feel extremely burned by the WiiU but I still want to play Nintendo games so I'm pretty torn.

The portability is cool but are features completely irrelevant to me at 30+.

So, do people who ditched in Nintendo with the Wii U, is the Switch bringing you back in?

Switch seems to be basically how they originally envisioned the Wii U. As a home gamer only, this does nothing for me unless they release a cheap dock+internals singular box for cheap.

I know they totally won't do it and I know I also shouldn't have expected it, but damn, I'd love Nintendo to make a true home console version of the Switch (like Vita TV). Drop the screen, drop the detachable controllers, just put the same hardware in a compact console, include a Pro controller in the box and sell it at $199.

The more I think about this, the less excited I get for the Switch. It looked cool in the video, but it also looks like it has so much stuff in it that I'll never or just barely use. If I buy it, it'll sit in its dock for 95 % of the time.

I just want an ultimate no gimmick multiplayer Nintendo console. :(

If only we could time travel back to 1998 and enjoy the one and only fun machine :(

Been busy today, so I haven't been able to comment on all the Switch news. In a nutshell, I love what I'm seeing so far! Very slick. Looks like the rumors were pretty much on target.

And Skyrim on a Nintendo system??? Bethesda on board??? Didn't see that coming! I just hope the system is a great success and I hope these publishers that are jumping on board find great success as well as far as software sales are concerned. Would be nice to have some decent/good third-party support. I'm cautiously optimistic, but we'll see what happens.

Can't wait to see more, especially the new 3D Mario! Looks interesting!

So far, so good, Nintendo! Looking forward to more info and game footage.

Honestly, the thing I'm most excited about is having Nintendo primarily focusing on one platform. I mostly play my handhelds at home as it is, so having all of Nintendo's new games on the Switch will be nice. I'm also optimistic we'll finally get that mainline Pokemon game on consoles that I've always wanted, and I'm oddly excited to see Fire Emblem on consoles again, even if gameplay-wise it won't really benefit from more powerful hardware.

I'm curious to see how it'll be received by people who actually game on the go frequently. Normally whenever I play my handhelds somewhere other than my house, it's when I'm traveling, so it's easy to put my 3DS or Vita in my bag, which I'll also do with the Switch, but I can see why others might not really think of it as an acceptable successor to the 3DS.

I'm still a bit worried they'll do something dumb to cripple the system, but overall I'm pretty excited by the concept and the idea of having Nintendo focus on one platform.

Now... Can I finally have a new Wave Race game? Please?

As an older gamer (30s) who hated the Wii and didn't bother with the WiiU, I'm pretty excited about the Switch. It fits a lot of needs in ways the PS4 can't -- obviously because of the mobile aspect.

I agree that only the fans are gonna like this, but a cell phone? Really? In today's yearly upgrade market any gamin cell phone wouldn't stand a chance.

I didn't really like the concept the way it was presented at first, but the more I talked to real life friends about it and considered the possibilities out loud, the more I can dig it.

I mean, I was gonna buy it anyways because of Nintendo's software.

I think they should have gone with some kind of controller (maybe equipped with a wifi broadcaster), that lets you stream games to your phone.

I'm so shocked that the dock doesn't include a custom Nvidia gpu lol.

Oh no what is going to happen to all the people that wanted to buy the dock on it's own to play games lol.

Any dedicated discussion/thread on the topic that the games seemed to tun worse (lower fps) when in mobile mode?

I can't be the only one guys?

The best part about Switch is that for the first time in years we have a Nintendo system that it's attractive by itself. That it creates buzz by itself. Because of the idea, the design, the proof of concept. Surely, the games are also interesting, Spla2oon already setting Japan on fire, but still the system itself it's in the spotlight. I have a great feeling about this. I hope Nintendo can attach a good price to it.

I'm sure they could, even so I think it'd still be pretty tough to play competitively on a screen that size..and how often are you really gonna have each player with their own NX at the same time? Unless you were constantly swapping them from different tourney setups.

Competitive or tourney play is not my thing but I can easily see my buds and I taking our Switch pads with us when we meet up and hang out. No different than remembering to being our 3DSs when we go out or visit.

They chose four of their most popular brands and two big name western third party titles for variety.

They chose 3 ports of their 1st party titles, 1 5 year old port of a western 3rd party title and one 3rd party title.

they chose one incredible popular and beloved open world game that will soon get a remastered release, a new mario game, the new zelda and as it seems splatoon 2..what is bad about that choice?

Yeah, a 5 year old game that will get a remaster. A new Mario game, which is basically the main attraction here, the New Zelda which also release on their previous platform and what looked an awful lot like Splatoon on Wii U. My point is basically that if software is king, Nintendo basically unveiled their new platform with a 5 year old game, 3 to 4 ports and a 3D Mario game. If these were the biggest representants for Switch, yeah, I don't feel like it smells good software wise.

Yeah we noticed ;) It's actually kinda promising imo. Means that the dock does probably increase performance and so the home experience will be a proper home experience. Of course it also means that two levels of optimization will have to be done for many games.

Edit: it's likely that they are still optimizing BotW for the portable experience, for example, since the home experience is likely the initial target for this kind of game and would likely have started there.

Nintendo totally got me with that trailer.

Easy concept, well explained, good name for the product. Good job!

Most important messages to me:

- I can play games anywhere. This is totally a trend in technology in general, access your stuff from anywhere, no matter whether we talk about clouds for our documents and photos, Xbox Play Anywhere or the Switch concept now. Totally right to jump onto this, espacially in a society that is increasingly mobile and on the go, working here today and tomorrow there. How cool is it to bring your home console experience with you? That's why I hope home console-style games will be frequent.

- Thirds are on the boat! Who honestly expected Skyrim? I sure didn't! Also good to see a sports game. To have EA Sports on board is pretty big to get a lot of units of your system sold. Let's hope thirds will stick with Nintendo this time, or let's hope Nintendo makes sures they do.

Actually, this is something that worries me. Does this mean that *all* nintendo games will have to be made for HD now? The 3DS was kind of the last bastion for Nintendo to be able to make non-HD games. Does this mean that we'll now actually get Nintendo's overall product halved because it's going to take larger teams and more money to create games for this thing, rather than them being able to pop out 3DS versions of franchises at a lower cost?

Because nintendos IPs are not as strong as you think they are with the crowd that games on PS4/Xbox/PC. People need to drop this delusion that time stood still between the n64 and now and that audience is just waiting with bated breath for the Nintendo of the early to mid 90s to come back. The world moves on. To the 18-34 year old crowd that Sony and Ms covet, Nintendo is synomouous with Pokemon and Wii. To that crowd, as much as it might hurt you to hear it, IPs like Gears of War, GTA, CoD and Madden are more important than Mario and Zelda, as are the existing PSN/XboxLive/Steam ecosystems they've bought into.

I don't know.

It's crazy how Nintendo gave up the only field where they were still somehow strong and double dipping on that WiiU concept, which make me think that Nintendo and Iwata never tried to do something new but were still following the WiiU philosophy with the Switch.

Right now it's a WiiU which you are able to leave the room now.

What are you talking about? This statement is so vague, I don't even know if you know what you're saying.

I don't think the full specs have been revealed, but I got the impression that Switch was more powerful than the Wii U, too. Nothing about this system really resembles Wii U.

I'm very optimistic about Switch. I don't need to have it day one, but I'm all in once it inevitably gets just a few key titles from certain franchises. The Japanese third party support looks to be very strong, which is the most important thing for me. Nintendo definitely has to maintain decent Western support for this thing, because it will only help them.

This system is the best idea Nintendo could have come up with.

Did you guys see what Laura said?

I believe the Switch supports swappable new controller sides. Suspect they're not mentioning yet to keep messaging clear.
