Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

I can't imagine the mindset of someone who is actually more excited for the incremental upgrades in the PS4P and Scorpio, which don't even offer new libraries/game ideas, vs the total paradigm shift happening here. I may be drinking the kool-aid hard, but for once I actually buy the pitch for "different vs. more powerful" that Nintendo is making this time, because they're actually highlighting flexibility and diversity of use instead of some gimmicky feature like motion control.

Oh well.

i think the key is that other than the hardware you can use your existing games.

GAF just tell me exactly how it is please

Switch isn't getting the bulk of the 3rd party games appearing on PS4/X1 due to lack of power, is that guaranteed or is there anything to wait for some piece of info??

Dat D-pad...

So I'm guessing we didn't get the scrolling shoulder wheels everybody was expecting? Shame.

I'm interested. I just hope they come up with a suitably zippy OS this time. Wii U was a nightmare in that regard.

Still, as this gen (last gen? Urgh, it's getting so complicated) showed, Nintendo make great games. Games where mechanics and interactivity are the main focus. That is a comforting thing when faced with so many releases that want to be an experience, as opposed to a game.

New Mario looks like a return to 64/Sunshine/Galaxy, looking at movement and camera. For me, that's a very good thing.

Now where's the really good stuff, Nintendo? Where's Metroid? You want me to empty my wallet - that's how you do it.

Guess I might as well sell the Wii U this weekend. Haven't touched it in 2 months.

Blah. I hate Craigslist. Almost tempted to just trade it to GameStop

I sold mine about a month ago, and now that I can see there's no disc drive in the thing, it ain't going to play Wii U discs obviously and the Wii U library is strong enough (for me) to get me to want to pick up another one. Or hope that they at least do digital versions of my favorite games like Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101, 3D World, etc.

My biggest hope atm is that they actually do a great virtual console this time and that my current purchases carry over. A fool's hope, I'm sure.

I would be shocked if the Switch receives that amount of 3rd party support

It probably won't have a lot of the same third party games that the PS4/X1 are getting, probably due to how it's not as powerful as those two.

I doubt Nintendo is positioning this to compete with those platforms.

Though presumably, a large part of the intent of Switch is to choose an architecture that can easily be iterated on for all future Nintendo dedicated hardware, so as to avoid having to start from scratch again.

Sure. But in the meantime I gather that we're jettisoning the old architecture that saw the Wii and Wii U have complete backwards compatibility with their predecessors.

As far as how well this thing does:

-Unless it launches and stays at a completely ludicrous price for a handheld or some other new portable gaming device with buttons comes out of nowhere it's going to get the Vita/3DS audience by default. That gives it a decently high floor for sales.

-How well this does for the "core" gaming audience really depends on how much effort third parties put into it and how easy it is for them to develop the games they're already making for it. If it gets most/all of the big multiplats, then the idea of trading off the (almost certainly higher) graphical fidelity of the PS4/XBone for the option of portability may make it a tempting buy for them. If you have zero interest in portability then it's basically a Wii U with Pokemon and no tablet gimmick to put up with, though. Which may be enough for some of them.

-The "casual" market that bought the Wii in droves and then moved on to cell phones and tablets is the biggest wild card. I don't see this being as huge as the Wii, but whatever crowd it does catch on with will probably stick with it longer than they stuck with the Wii. Would be interesting to see if the big mobile games get ports to this.

If I do go craigslist, whats a good price to ask?

$150 maybe? $175 depending on condition? I'd keep it under $200. You won't get much for it at Gamestop especially if you want cash.

I doubt it. That thing seemed to be fresh out of the 3D printer.

Yeah, it looked... off in the video. Maybe they're still finalizing it. I was asking so I could get a better look at it because I wasn't too impressed with it in the vid.

You're really excited to buy endless amounts of accessories to play games? Nintendo will never go out of business with customers like you lol.

Nah I am ready to customize as I like. I seriously doubt every game would need its own controllers lol. Prolly more like a user preference thing. The vanilla ones will no doubt work for most if not all games.

The Switch really gave the mods some work earlier:

Kinda crazy how my most anticipated game apart from Zelda is one we haven't heard anything about

I would expect there to be proper clearance and guide rails that prevent the screen from making contact. If not like a soft felt like material on the screen side.

Would actually be really nice if placing it in the dock cleaned away smudges from the screen.
Yeah this would be a real dream.

I really don't care anything about the system. As long as it works, I'm good. Please Nintendo, just show off some game trailers soon.

So is this supposed to a successor to both the Wii U and the 3DS? I'd be really disappointed if there is no follow-up to the 3DS. I can't really see Monster Hunter thriving on the Switch. It's portable but not really.

If this is Nintendo dropping support for the 3DS, and if this flops like the Wii U, I can see them moving back to Sony though.

Here's to hoping we get a hi-res MH for this though.

but we don't have the technical data, right??

I am looking for a line like this.

"Switch has this RAM, this CPU, that GPU and therefore, PS4/X1 games like we know them (Souls games, for example)) are just not possible, therefore 3rd party support is not only doubtful, it's not possible at all".

There are two things I want in addition to this:

a) I want the Joy-Con to work like two Wii Remotes for FPS games etc?

b) I want a VR headset to drop that screen into and the Joy-Con's to have motion control to work for the VR?

I hope this is reasonably priced...please be sold at a good price. I want another Nintendo system in my home.

If that crowd is not that big, what sense would to make for Nintendo to chase after them? Those gamers are already being satisfied by Sony, MS and PC. It would be an uphill battle to even crack into that market. Nintendo is playing it right in my opinion by trying to differentiate. They did it with the Wii and succeeded, did it with the Wii U and failed, but even then I think the core business concept is the right now, to carve their own niche. I think the Switch has a chance to be successful not only for this reason, but also because Nintendo seems to be better diversifying and putting those valuable IPs to good use (through Amiibo, and the nes mini, and movies and theme parks and mobile) rather than trying to convince the kid playing Call of Duty to ditch that and play Splatoon instead.

I mostly agree with you here, but I do think they should at least offer an option to this crowd. What I meant by they're not so big is that I don't think that gamers who really like CoD for instance encompass the majority of people that view gaming with more than a passing interest (non "casuals" to be specific). CoD, GTA, Madden or Fifa fans are unlikely to buy Nintendo consoles, but IMO there's at least some part of the crowd that own a PS4 or Xbox One, or even a part of those franchises communities who might only play them because they are currently the most relevant ones, who would make the jump to a Nintendo ecosystem if the opportunity was presented. If it gets really hyped and well marketed (which is not something I'm willing to bet on since this is Nintendo), and that's where having something huge as Mario and Pokemon as exclusive titles really helps, it could take a slice of the PS4/One market.

So I agree with you that they shouldn't compete with them directly, they tried with the GC and got fucked, but I don't think they should go completely out of left field. I think they should strike a balance at being different but still somewhat relatable, which I think they hit here but it remains to be seen.

Remember the posts claiming the RDR2 reveal was gonna totally outshine the NX announcement?

I'd look them up, but I don't want to wade through the flood of Switch threads to find them :P

It just feels like such diminishing returns to plunk down a huge sum of money for the console upgrades MS and Sony are offering, compared to what you get with this thing. My train rides are going to be awesome because of this thing. You don't see that, at all?

Yea you can, they have 4K HDR TVs. I'd be more excited if I did as well, sadly I do not.

There's nothing that would make someone choose a PS4/XB over Nintendo anymore. Enough of the same third party games on Switch.. the ability to undock and play on the go is much more compelling than 4K content 95% of the population can't even properly enjoy.

This thing has serious fad potential. Imagine Switch meet ups similar to the Pokémon GO phenomenon. Very doable now. Multiplayer has been all but forgotten by Sony and MS, Nintendo is bringing multiplayer out of the home. It will be a huge conversation starter, and if prices right I believe it will really take off. Zelda and Splatoon as possible launch titles will be huge.

Especially once Smash and Pokémon are released.
Are we sure we know what the people want anymore? Maybe the reason GO was successful is because it came in an all-in-one communicative device where the only hassle about it is slipping in and out of your pocket.

Did you guys see what Laura said?

I believe the Switch supports swappable new controller sides. Suspect they're not mentioning yet to keep messaging clear.

Just imagine the possibilities of Controller schemes

I better get a splatoon themed controller. And a Zelda one. If there's a Xenoblade one I'll freak. C'mon Nintendo this is a goldmine.

I'm sure this has been posted:

Hope she's right. Price info would be enlightening.

So it says it has multi-touch but I wonder what for?

It looks like from the trailer you have to dock the tablet to play the system on a tv, so in that usage touch would be useless.

It also would remove the good parts about the Wii U tablet, like being able to use it for inventory screens or maps etc.

No more second screen?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The second preorders go up at GameStop it's mine

Yeah, I need to know where there will be midnight launches. I'm willing to drive for it, if needed.

I typically go GameStop twice per generation: once to preorder my Nintendo console, and again to pick it up on Launch Day.

detachable joy con controllers are stupid and unnecessary. Who plays together on a 7 inch screen.

Everything is fine I guess. 720p screen would be an ideal res of the ARM(?) hw power it has.

Has the docking station additional hw power. It would increase cost if you need to make graphics twice as in 2 socs
