I could totally get your point of view until you went and mentioned VR.

VR in it's current form is a fad. It's certainly not going to take the world by storm either.

Okay.

No it isn't. No it isn't! The system has a traditional controller layout as it is. This is the most normal control scheme Nintendo has ever had since the SNES. It has 4 shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, a D-Pad, and 4 face buttons, plus a home button, and a share button. It's exactly the same as every other system now.

You honestly think that because they broke the D-Pad it's gonna make 3rd parties bail? That broken D-Pad really fucks with Sony's 3rd party support doesn't it.

I don't think that would be a reason for third parties to bail.

But tell me this... how do you perform a dragon punch motion in a fighting game?

So do you guys think this will have smartphone compatibility?

I mean, what if you get bonus stuff by connecting the super mario run game with the new mario, or Pokemon go with a Pokemon Switch game? It could also be used as an extra controller for multiplayer gaming on the go.

One thing that concerns me is how certain games like pokemon and animal crossing will be handled. For the longest time those franchises have had only one save file per cartridge. There are plenty of families where each kid has their own DS/3DS and their own pokemon game. If the next Pokemon game only allows one save file, that can bet me a problem. I can see it being a very hard sell to parents that they need to buy a Switch for each child, especially if the price is $300 or more.

Maybe Nintendo has thought about that and has something up their sleeve.

It might just flop harder than the Ouya.

There's already a concern about battery life without it, add in cell networks and 4g and it's pretty much assured to have a garbage battery life.

I'm curious what their stance on this is as far as being the successor to the 3ds. I mean at face value this is a handheld with dockable TV output.

I assume this is the replacement to both the 3ds and the wiiu at this point?

It seems people don't really talk about that yet but i'm beginning to think there is a catch there. They never ever said they would unite both library.

The Switch is 100% showcased as a home console playable like a portable, but NOT a 3ds follow up. Did they show animal crossing, pokemon, jrpgs, any major portable ip ? Nope. They showed us a portable version of the WiiU, but never at any moment they tried to relate to the audience of the 3ds.

Exactly like if they wanted to keep them apart from each other actually. So i'm wondering what's left if the Switch doesn't win the portable library..

Oh c'mon.

There's more die hard Nintendo fans that would buy anything Nintendo in itself that guarantee better sales than Ouya.

That's good news then, I didn't realise the price was announced, do you have a link?

oh come onn
assuming, since this is foremost a home console, it'll naturally be more expensive :0

or maybe they'll announce a dedicated portable device, which is also realistic. (but then, what's the hook for the switch? :/)

I'd like to see more size comparisons since the handheld component looks pretty large.

If they do "remasters" of games, I wonder if they will be cross platform between the switch and Wii U? Can't wait for "Super Smash Bros for the Wii U for the Nintendo Switch."

For your own sake, don't jump to that conclusion.
There isn't any casual games in the video. They are getting allot of support and Nintendo handhelds always did a great job.

I don't want to draw conclusions to soon, but someone did it before me, so I reacted with my own thoughts on it.

No you're right VR is a roaring success, all them Vives and Rifts are flying off the shelves, and PS VR is going to be the best selling device in the world ever. VR at this stage is not ready for mainstream adoption for various reasons. Price, limited content, and health issues. I've no doubt the future is VR but not in it's current form.

This thread is turning into shit now to be honest.

The Ouya comparison is pretty much trolling at this point.

Let's just wait and see the sales.

Nintendo consoles already have individual profiles with individual saves though.

that's the problem though, if they come up with a dedicated portable device, that's undermining the draw of the switch; that it's both!

I like how it immediately drew the ire of people wanting it to be more for one than for the other. Like a dirty fence-sitting voter, gotta choose a side!

Well it was confirmed that their will be a Pokemon game for the NX so if Switch is getting pokemon then that could be telling.

Look what I found on the front page of Imgur today....

5 years later and still relevant.

And KH3 still isn't out...
Or HL3
Or FFXV...

I'M A PROPHET!

More expensive than what?

You think the dock is going to significantly add hundreds of dollars to the price? Afterall the dock is the only thing that separates the line between console and handheld right?

The most expensive component is the portable element. Perhaps if the dock contained a processor or gpu like some were suggesting then the price would have been significantly increased.

People are saying the device is expensive, yet we don't even know the price lol.

I'm not saying it won't be, I don't know. But my personal opinion is that Nintendo are aware that price was an issue with the Wii U, and they're aware of the burden the gamepad had on their ability to lower the price.

As much as I want to get a new Nintendo system, skipped the Wii U, this really isn't doing anything for me personally as a hardware device. Really wondering about the price of this...

Maybe, but I do also understand that there's a point where you just kind of have to realize that it's kind of a lost cause trying to pretend that Nintendo hardware will be a good home to the types of AAA games you're asking for that already have perfectly fine homes on PS/Xbox/PC. Would it be better if there was less of a performance gap to make the platform more inviting? Yeah. But what are they going to do here? Release an expensive tablet that scares off mainstream audiences even more? Focus on making a powerful console box?

Given that the Wii U wasn't truly portable, I don't think sacrificing power for gimmicks was the right call. But seeing as how they wanted to go truly hybrid here, I don't know what the alternative is.

People complaining about power do you think Nintendo would be successful going for PS4 level power with Nintendo games. .

several points.

1.-: It's not about competing against other consoles, it's about offering their fanbase more for their money and loyalty.

2.- I don't think being an hybrid is an excuse to sacrifice power, what do I win from it being an hybrid? if it's a home console, like they say, I don't see why I absolutely need to carry it around.

3.- This mentality hurst the industry so much. Take the Wii and their 100 million base. how many software sales were lost because it couldn't run any major games out there? just think for a second what would a Wii version of Final Fantasy XIII would have done for japan. SE lost like 1 million sales right then and there. And like that, with every major game japanese game.

Did you forget that the Wii had a terrible attach rate? Or how awful FFXIII ended up on 360? Or that the Wii's appeal was never about AAA games?

Looks incredible. Love the concept of merging handheld and console gaming. The system won't have issues the Wiiu and 3ds had with dry seasons.

Don't know why I want to call it the Nintendo Sandwich so badly.

I'll buy one just for the Zelda, but only if it's sub $325

Are you really surprised with this thread turning into shit? People are naturally cynical when Nintendo announces a plastic thingamabob that you can put next to your 4K TV set and you can slide a tablet in and render games in smoking hot 720p quality, a technology that's more than a decade old.

Now that I'm home from work, I've been able to watch the trailer a couple of times. Have a lot on my mind here, and I'm going to let it out.

THE TRAILER

First thing's first, this was way better than the Wii U debut trailer. In every single way. Easy to understand, straightforward, presented games we knew were coming (Zelda), ports of games we are familiar with (Splatoon, Kart, Skyrim) and entirely new games (3D Mario). Overall, it was good stuff.

Now lets break it down. This pic from the OP does a good job illustrating everything shown in the trailer, but I'm going to break it down in chronological order.

We start with a guy playing Zelda on the TV. Doge wants to go for a walk. Like anyone in a Nintendo commercial, instead of taking a fucking 10 minute break from the kideo games, why not continue to strain your eyes and take the gaming experience with you! Fuck you doge!

The name is revealed at last: Nintendo Switch. I don't know how I feel about the name yet. Unlike the Wii U, it certainly explains the concept (Switch from your TV to a handheld!), Switch is really an every day word and doesn't really roll of the tongue for me. I think I would have liked Nintendo Go better. Switch isn't horrible, though. Anyways...

Dude doesn't even look at his furry friend as he changes control methods. and then BOOM

The fucking frame rate drops to the teens. Dude. What. I don't understand this at all. Trailers like this are supposed to be full of bullshit. Why was the footage of handheld Zelda so choppy? Will playing games on the go result in a framerate drop? Will this be fixed come launch? Was it just an error with the trailer? Yikes...

We switch to the airport. The most important thing here is our introduction to 3DS-esque carts as the physical media for the system, and the angle at which we see the hardware. It looks like there will be 4 shoulder buttons in their traditional positions... and are those analog triggers I see? Yessssssss Nintendo.

I barely go on airplanes, but even if I did, I'd never use that stand or detach the controllers from the main unit like that. Just seems like such a rare use case. If I'm going to play a handheld... what's wrong with playing it with the joycons attached to the unit? I guess they want to give people options.

Then he gets home and picks up the pro controller. aww yeah. That's what I'm talking about. We're back to asymmetical analog sticks as it should be, and the sticks themselves look like Xbone's, which is great. This is how I will play Switch 99% of the time.

Skyrim is a big get for Nintendo. I hope the third parties don't get scared off when it sells like shit, though. It's going to be a worse looking version of a 5 year old game on a Nintendo platform for the first time. I hope Nintendo offers Bethesda some incentive here.

And now we come to the dumbest, most unrealistic part of the video imo... people crowding around a screen and playing with insanely small "controllers" with 1 analog stick and 4 buttons. I personally can't ever see a situation where my friends or I would ever partake in such an activity. Playing a game that way looks insanely uncomfortable, too.

I know when I play pickup ball outside, sweaty as fuck, the first thing I want to do is grab my expensive ass video game system that I left in my bag and play fake basketball IMMEDIATELY after playing real basketball.

"It's a beautiful day, come outside and chill with us you fucking introvert!"

"fiiiiiiiiiine but i'm bringing my nintendo out with me you boring fucks"

now gather round the tiny screen outside and play video games with me in this totally realistic situation

Now we enter the esports portion of the video, which caught me off guard. This tells me that Nintendo has plans for getting more involved with esports going forward. Possibly hosting their own tournaments? With prize money?

Earlier this year, the fake tournament that filled up a stadium in this advertisement was a reality at Evo 2016 in July, where Super Smash Bros Melee filled up an entire stadium for the finals day, with over 100k viewers on the stream. In real life, Splatoon will not fill up a stadium... Smash Bros will. Specifically, Melee HD. If Nintendo really wants to get into esports, they need to push Smash HARD.

Overall, while silly and unrealistic, a good video and some nice game announcements. I really hope the frame rate drop was a mistake, though.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON SWITCH

While it's still early (no price or games really announced besides Zelda), from this trailer it seems the Switch is pretty underpowered compared to the PS4 and Xbox One. Impressive for a portable, yes, but... I'm not sure how much of a selling point that is these days. I do expect a $199 or $249 price point on this thing, but I'm not sure if that will be enough to actually sell the thing to the masses. If the big, third party games look noticeably worse than the competition... that is going to hurt this console. Nintendo can not get by these days with first party output alone. This will not be another Wii.

So overall, looking at the market appeal of this thing, I honestly don't see a machine that is much more appealing than the Wii U or 3DS. The gimmick (Console gaming on the go) doesn't seem that appealing to me, much less the general public. The core gamer will be happy with their Playstation or Xbox, the casual gamer will be happy with their mobile games... this appeals to someone in between. The people that bought the Wii U and 3DS. Die hard Nintendo fans... and some other people. That's my early prediction.

But forget the market. The market shit on the Wii U and I loved it. What do I think? Well, to me, I was looking out for three things today:

1. Hardware power

2. Controller

3. Software

I can look at the hardware power in two different ways: Optimistically and pessimistically. Pessimistically, this thing is an underpowered console that appears barely more powerful than Wii U, that I can take on the go. meh.

However, optimistically... this thing is a huge jump from the 3DS in power, AND I can play it on my TV! WAOW VERY NICE

So I'm not too concerned there. While deep down I long for a Scorpio-equivalent in power that plays Nintendo games, I knew that wasn't going to happen. The Wii U first party games, running at 720p/60fps with Nintendo's god tier art design looked fantastic. If this thing is a bit stronger than Wii U, it should look fine.

The controller, that is, the pro controller, also looks great. As I mentioned, analog triggers seem to be in tact, and it's taken the superior form of the asymmetrical analog sticks. I will barely play Switch without this controller, so it looks like they nailed that aspect. I'm also assuming the GC controller adapter will be compatible, as the dock had USB ports :)

Finally, the software. We got a bunch of ports (it looks like) and one new game.

Zelda BOTW
Mario Kart 8 w/ double dash item style and King Boo
Splatoon 1.5 (or 2? Was unclear)
Skyrim Special Edition

3D MARIO!

Not much more can be said about Zelda. I'm looking forward to it, of course. Seeing Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon close to launch would be sweet. These games are too good to die on the Wii U and should be experienced by a larger audience. Additional characters, gameplay modes and other various features are a great idea. Cheap, easy and a fantastic way to fill up the launch day/window lineup for Switch. I'm going to guess that Smash 4 will also be coming to Switch, with new stages and hopefully characters too (Ice Climbers!).

The star of the show was 3D Mario. From the brief look we had, it looks like it will be heading back to the 64/Sunshine style of 3D Mario, at least a little bit. Those few seconds of the game just LOOKED way better than 3D Land and 3D World when they were first presented. I want to see more. Badly. I need it.

SO OVERALL:

I come away from today's announcement pretty happy. I'm happy the crazy speculation is over, and we at least have something to talk about until... probably January, when Nintendo talks about Switch again. I look at today's news excited to play Zelda with that pro controller. I'm excited to play the greatest hits of the Wii U with some neat twists and extras. Most of all, a new 3D Mario masterpiece is coming, and it looks fantastic.

Not bad Nintendo, not bad at all.

I hope the third party support this thing gets is more similar to what the 3DS got rather than the other home consoles. I'd rather see stuff like SMT, Monster Hunter, Bravely Default, etc etc rather than big AAA franchise things that I can already play 100 different places.

Points one and two are just you saying you don't want a portable gaming console. This may not be the device for you, and that's fine. Point three is just pure speculation that I don't care to address at all.

Do we know the resolution yet though? Obviously it's not going to be 4K, but 1080p isn't really wild.

The Wii U rendered at 1080p and by all accounts the Switch is more powerful, but we're now at the stage where some people think the Switch will only be able to render 720p on your tv? Do people honestly think Nintendo have decided to suddenly go to 720p output on a tv.

And to be fair why were people expecting state of the art technology from Nintendo. They made it clear that's not their objective.

I've been struggling all day to contain the hype, but I do think this definitely has the potential to be "the next big thing" as long as they can keep the battery life long enough and it's enjoyable to play on the go.

Yes some of you are disappointed that it's not going to run 4k games at 120fps, but Nintendo was never going to build this to go head to head with Sony/MS, they've lost that war at this point.

So is this effectively the next Nintendo handheld as well???

I imagine so. They are consolidating their resources to one platform so they won't have to rely on 3rd parties for support (although having a healthy ecosystem of third party support would definitely be welcomed, but after the Wii U disaster they had to prepare for worst case scenario).

If this system is wildly successful, who knows maybe they'll release another dedicated handheld one day. But they'll have to compete with iOS and Android, and it looks like they have finally taken the "If you can't beat em, join em" route with Pokemon GO, Mario Run, and more to come!
