A serious attempt to cater to eSports with Splatoon would be a good start though.

Also, for those unaware (haven't read the thread to know if this was pointed out), the video was shot in Vancouver, BC.
It's getting a fairer amount of positivity online than I suspected it would, but this is a very different sort of marketing for Nintendo than we have seen from them in the past.
But the rest is a little too soon to say. Miis are probably still in, one way or another.

I do agree. Zelda has always been a 30fps game at best (in most cases) so I wasn't expecting 60. I say just wait till people have hands-on impressions before making a judgement.

720p phones are uber-common and it looks great at high pixel densities. I'm sure an App would be popular with plenty of users.
Speaking of tournaments, we don't yet know if "eSports" aren't just a fad.
It was pretty obvious I was talking about consoles. Nintendo's teams were also divided between consoles and handhelds until relatively recently. No need for "wtf am i reading" nonsense.
More power is always nice, but this way Nintendo can keep it relatively cheap and bring in all their handheld fans and make all their games on one system. I'm not the least bit worried about the lack of XB1/PS4 power considering all the other advantages.

This is kind of going off topic, but eSports has been a thing for over a decade already (closer to 2 decades I think), and it has continuously grown throughout that time. Within the last few years it has boomed a lot, and at some point it might calm down, but it's certainly not going down as a fad.

After having a few hours to digest what I've seen with the Switch... I'm hesitantly excited. I know, I'm going to get it (eventually) I've owned every Nintendo home console since the N64. I really want to see what else would be on the system (game wise).
It also left so many questions. How long does the batteries in the Joy-Cons last. Will they charge from being attached to the Switch, while it's not plugged in. Prices?? This thing looks like the accessory KING! I'm willing to condense my Nintendo catalog to just this and probably still my 3DS. I hope they have a way we can do that affordably.

720p on a 6.2 inch screen will look great, keep the cost down, and help with battery life. There is no need to have a 1080p screen when, in order to run games at that rez, the device would have to practically melt itself into a zero-power state. No thanks. A 1080p screen for a "low-cost" device that doesn't need it would be ridiculous.
Besides, assuming it's 6.2 inches and has a 16:9 aspect ratio, that's almost 207 ppi, right? That is plenty of pixel density for the assets this thing is likely to be able to push.

What is probably a port of Splatoon, a MK9 that looks very similar to 8, and a port of a 5 year old game that will be full price are not exciting, I agree.
Skyrim will be over half a decade old.
But MK9 can still sell being MK. Even if the bloody thing tanks it will probably do fantastic by any measure.
I'm iffy on Splatoon, it might decline in sales and like I said it's probably a port.
New 3D Mario is excellent news for Nintendo fans, and at the very least the normal 3D Land/World camera looks to be dead which is great news. While 3D Mario never sold as well as 2D, that statement people make is ignoring that it certainly would have on N64 and GC during those 3D-crazy gens. And with how NSMB has been run into the ground, I have faith that 3D Mario can be #1 in sales and not just hearts. An earlier release could help too.
But those 4 games are the only titles shown, I don't think that's not hype inducing for core gamers, except Mario. Maybe I'm wrong but, MK and Splatoon look very similar to the Wii U versions (because they likely are), so why should Wii U gamers care? I guess Skyrim is sort of portable now, but it was about as portable with a good laptop in 2011.

The system is perfect for local multiplayer right out of the box! I love it. The Switch controller itself literally functioning as 2 controllers for simple games like Mario Kart, sports games, probably Smash, etc is awesome.

I am really worried about the protability of that thing. Standard analog sticks are probably not too pocket friendly and the thing looks huge. Add to that the potential for horrible battery times, and I am almost certain I will have to buy a Switch Slim later down the road to even use it as a proper replacement for 3DS.
The handles seem to be a bit of a fusion between the GameCube controller, Wii nunchuck and XBone controller.
The dpad seems similar to the c buttons on the N64 controller.
It a very unique asymmetrical controller.

Probably the best aspect about Switch for me will be playing console Dragon Quest XI on the go.
Hopefully the return of DQ in the West has sold and will continue to sell enough to justify that cost.
At least we now definitively know that the Switch should definitely be beefy enough for that version, even if the visuals get paired some. Not that it being the PS4 version was ever unlikely.

I'm guessing that they're going to be using the Wii U games to sell advanced ports/rereleases for the Switch. Basically the same games with more characters, levels, features, etc. They already have these great games that easily could sell much more with a wider base, so why not try again with them on new, potentially more appealing hardware?
I know if they release Smash for Switch that has every level from both the Wii U and 3DS, I'd probably grab that.
It's a vicious cycle, breh. Always someone gonna be complaining!

My hype is kinda gone. If the thing has no TV mode, we are looking at a gimped console for the sake of being hybrid.
I dont do handheld gaming, so basically Im stuck with half a console and 720p games.
All so Nintendo can merge their console and handheld business.
Why didnt they just make a Gamecube 2.0 for at home and a handheld with similar but weaker tech for on the go. Then have all the games run at 2 modes. Much better than this hybrid shizzle.

After watching the trailer a few times and letting it set in, I'm excited but apprehensive. Some thoughts;
The good:
- The hardware looks very slick, about as good as it gets for that kind of device.
- As someone who was against the idea of a hybrid in part due to how cumbersome it could be to put everything together, it's nice to see that the whole process of removing the Joy Cons from the console or putting the latter into the dock appears to be seamless and even satisfying.
- The trailer is easily the best piece of Nintendo marketing since the Wii days. Clear, catchy, straight to the point. The Switch "click" being played during key moments in the video is reminiscent of how the Wii Would Like To Play tagline was used in the early Wii promo videos. Nintendo are once again marketing to the young professional crowd and there's not a single kid to be seen in the trailer.
- The detachable controllers have a lot of add-on potential. As shown in the mockup that's been going around, you could design plenty of game-specific Joy Cons, and they would be usable in docked or portable mode.
- The versatility of the system makes it perfect for eSports as seen in the Splatoon segment.
The questionable:
- Using the Joy Cons for 2 player games doesn't seem very comfortable unless you have small hands.
- Battery life needs to be decent.
- Even if every part of the system works as advertised... I'm still a bit skeptical about the value proposition. This is great for game enthusiasts and Nintendo fans, but will the average mainstream gamer care about taking their games everywhere on the go at the expense of a better home experience and vice-versa? The trailer shows the idealized vision for Switch, but will a sizable enough amount of people want to play their Switch at rooftop parties or after a pickup ballgame with those dinky controllers? There seems to be a fair amount of buzz around Switch right now, but I'm not yet convinced it will translate into the type of sales Nintendo are hoping for. Which takes me to the most crucial factor...
- This needs to have an affordable launch price. The market for this thing is not yet proven and there's no guarantee the average consumer will see enough value in a home console that can be taken on the go to pay $300 or more when an objectively better home console experience is already available for under $300 on PS4 and Xbox One. $249 would be a very good price for Switch, anything above that is pushing it.
Impressions aside, I highly doubt there will be stationary or portable-only SKUs of this device like some are suggesting or hoping for here, as doing so would undermine the whole Switch concept down to the brand name itself. Switch is likely going to be one product line with, at most, a smaller or XL option, based around the idea of a home console that can be played on the go. However, this also doesn't mean that Switch is the only product line Nintendo will offer going forward. Much like Apple, which has three product lines derived from the iPhone's A series chip and iOS (iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch), I think Nintendo will eventually offer more specialized hardware (a stationary console, a pure tablet for more casual fare, etc...), all based on the Switch's architecture/OS and sharing (most of) the same software. Each of these will also become their own product line if successful.

Sure it's not an accurate portrayal of the situation, but I can sympathize with the underlying point.
Games with high fidelity graphics and tons of effects are total battery-hogs on my iPad. I shudder to think how draining an Arkham Knight or Witcher 3 would be in its current state.
You're not supposed to carry a 6+ inch tablet in your pocket.
I can already see complaints of scratch marks on the screen due to sliding it in and out of the docking unit. Time to buy some hori stock.
I also look forward to playing the screen lotto again. Will I get one with yellow/red/green tint, dead pixels or maybe both. I cant wait to find out!
The one thing that bugs me most about the design other than the ugly original DS grey is how big the bezel around the screen is. It would look so much slicker if it was reduced by half or more.

I'm pretty excited about this personally but I just don't see how a high techy handheld system with a TV out won't flop. It's like just giving the vita a TV out. It still would have failed hard. And Too many sacrifices made for at home gamers.

I agree with you, it's just I don't think a Splatoon port is going to excite a mainstream potential audience outside of Japan, and it certainly won't cause all of Nintendo's core audience to upgrade their discs of the game to Switch game cards. There has to be more early on than a few enhanced Wii U ports to get the hype flowing, even if MK is huge on its own and would sell no matter what.

Wii U gamers who bought digital will care if these ports are free or a mild upgrade cost for extra features, so they can play these online-enabled games on hardware that might actually sell to a larger audience. Just a thought though.
Besides, I remember people being hyped to get a PS4 for The Last of Us remaster, so....

None of this comment makes sense to me. Twitch is on the PS4... yes. yes it is. Your PS4 is attached to your TV, which is presumably 1080p or 4k. If the switch is docked, it's attached to your TV, which is 1080p or 4k. no difference which device you're watching on or streaming from to twitch.
If you're undocked, sure, you're watching it on a 6.5" (presumably because all they've said is it's an HD screen) 720p screen, but you're not attached to the TV, which is functionality your PS4 doesn't have.
I'm just not getting your problem with what you replied to or with watching twitch in 720p if you're already inclined to watch some twitch streams.
