I like everything about this but the detachable controllers. Those things look so cheap and ugly... they just aren't jiving with me at all. I really wish they'd somehow come up with another solution. I'm also not really cool with launching a system with two totally separate types of controllers. It all just seems so... strange and disjointed. It's like there are too many different parts, and too much is trying to be done at once. I guess when you're trying to mash a console and handheld into a single device, though, "janky" is the only way to go.

None of this comment makes sense to me. Twitch is on the PS4... yes. yes it is. Your PS4 is attached to your TV, which is presumably 1080p or 4k. If the switch is docked, it's attached to your TV, which is 1080p or 4k. no difference which device you're watching on or streaming from to twitch.

If you're undocked, sure, you're watching it on a 6.5" (presumably because all they've said is it's an HD screen) 720p screen, but you're not attached to the TV, which is functionality your PS4 doesn't have.

I'm just not getting your problem with what you replied to or with watching twitch in 720p if you're already inclined to watch some twitch streams.

The sticking point is whether this device will display native 1080p or 720p upscaled to 1080p while connected to a TV.

I'm not. Wii U was an absolute disaster of a device on every level. Its software was the only reason it survived longer than six months.

It was a flop and the software couldn't save it bottom line. If this is a poor concept to the market the software won't save this either. Has to be hardware people want.

I'm pretty excited about this personally but I just don't see how a high techy handheld system with a TV out won't flop. It's like just giving the vita a TV out. It still would have failed hard. And Too many sacrifices made for at home gamers.

Everyone wants to try this out, all my friends love the idea. Vita never had that. It's a whole different situation.

it will stream twitch in native 1080p regardless. twitch isn't rendering anything, it's just pulling and displaying a stream. It will undoubtedly stream Netflix 4K content as well as 4K content from other sources. You're talking about a non gaming application and whether the console is able to output to the defacto standard resolutions. strange.

If you're referring to streaming to twitch in 720p from a Switch, what difference will it really make to the viewer watching at home?

Looks like Breath of the Wild might be the final Nintendo disc-based title. The last time we'll see disc art or deal with potentially noisy or wonky drives in Nintendo hardware. End of an era that started in September 2001 in Japan.

From what we could see of it (which admittedly wasn't much) the dock doesn't appear to have an Ethernet jack. Sigh, Nintendo.

Wii U gamers who bought digital will care if these ports are free or a mild upgrade cost for extra features, so they can play these online-enabled games on hardware that might actually sell to a larger audience. Just a thought though.

Besides, I remember people being hyped to get a PS4 for The Last of Us remaster, so....

You missed a lot of people saying it'd be a whole-cloth unique version like the 3DS.

I just can't see a free or cheap upgrade even for digital purchasers. I doubt we're talking straight ports and I also don't think Nintendo will want to alienate physical gamers like that, even though they make less money from physical sales.

Oh, and I was hyped for the TLOU Remaster, but I didn't have a PS3, and it came out just over a year after. It was also slightly below full price.

Skyrim was not an exclusive like TLOU was and was released everywhere five years ago and will be released on PS4 and XB1 in less than a week. It's also full price again.

As for DQXI, I'm not sure why people who think that Horii would need a whole different game made for a more modern platform.

Marketing, really, and getting just the right specs and price to make to not a horrific dent to your wallet, but also appealing to hardcore gamers who might not always have time to play at home.

Hardcore gamers with not enough time to play at home, but they do have time to play outside their home? That seems like a very small group.

A concept needs good, unique software to be a success. We'll see soon enough if the market reacts positively to both.

But yes, if the public flat-out rejects the entire point of this system, software won't do much to save it.

Too bad the Switch trailer got overshadowed by the RDR2 trailer. You can barely find a Switch thread in these here parts.

Somebody find that post from yesterday where someone claimed that RDR2's trailer (currently at 3.4 million) would get 6-7 times more views than the NX reveal trailer (currently at 8 million).

I think the marketing is good, and people are buying into the 'hybrid' selling point at first blush. But what happens when people realize it's just a handheld with a dock? Probably still exciting if they are into Nintendo games and portables. But if not what does this give?

I'm really interested in seeing what Nintendo's software output will be like. It's such an uncharted territory now that they're rolling their console and handheld lines into one.

Are you paying attention? This is exactly what people have wanted since the industry began. This is why tablet gaming blew up to a certain point and has hit a ceiling with regard to power and actual controllability given design choices that make them great all in one media consumption devices but -meh- gaming devices.

This is a Nintendo system playing ALL of Nintendo's software going forward. on one device, that can go anywhere you can, and play AAA quality games at a level on par with the current generation of hardware. Imagine that PS4, or Xbox One.. Now imagine it's really small, and uses cartridges, and can be easily taken on the go with you. I mean, I can't hold your hand through all of this, if you don't like it you don't like it, but the reaction by and large has been overwhelmingly positive. No one's gonna force you to buy it.

You're right, it would have failed regardless. Because Vita didn't have the software. Switch will.

We don't know this yet though. We'll have to wait a year and see how that pans out. Very premature to say that now. They were promised the same for the Wii U and look how that turned out. They were all in months before and after release everyone jumped off the sinking ship.

Oh, I'm referring mainly to first party titles + some third party partnerships. These two things alone will produce a lot of software.

I have little faith in strong third party support, despite the announced partners.

I think there will be more to it. I mean the detachable controllers cant be the only thing nintendo tried to hide until now...they still act very secretly...

um. wow.

not even joking. That's kind of it.

just curious, is the switch more powerful than wiiU?

I think the consensus was that even if they were using the Tegra (what is it, X1) lower powered, non 16nm model, it would still be more powerful with the Wii U, but the Nvidia press release makes it sound (since they called out the SoC being based on their current industry leading desktop GPUs) like it's the Parker (am I getting these names right?). And it's pretty clearly active cooled, which supposedly is a sign it's running at full speed, and not down clocked for heat considerations.

This honestly looks like the Wii U all over again. Being able to bring my console with me on boring trips is a neat idea, but not something everyone will use. Skyrim is very, very old, yet they use this game to promote their console in their launch trailer. It gives me an idea on how far behind this console is. I hope I'm wrong.

It's a remastered version of the game, which is coming out on PS4 and Xbox1.

Handheld is still the best selling system. Even better as ps4.
Everyone loved vita. This is way better

A handheld with a dock is pretty much exactly what I want. If it has all of Nintendo's software as well as Pokemon mainline games and the great games that generally come out for 3DS, as well as some major 3rd party AAA games that run on great scalable engines? Sign me right the fuck up.

I hope they do. Having all the software combined from portable and home consoles is the only thing going for it for me now. Won't be too impressed with the hardware I figure, but it's a tablet and more power will come at the cost of higher price and battery life.

I truly, truly hope the performance won't be gimped, since the whole point of this having all your home games on the go.

Curious, how does it look like the WiiU at all? There's no dual screen gameplay, it's going to be more capable than WiiU. It has slick, modern industrial design, and it's being marketed to adults that have busy lives.

See it's not just about boring trips, which makes you sound like a 14 year old being forced by your family to go to the Grand Canyon. No, it's business trips, even awesome vacations, or even just the bus/uber/car ride to work or something. I whipped out my 3DS at Splunk.conf while I waited for registration to open, for like two hours. It wasn't necessarily boring, I was there for some awesome shit anyway, but I wanted to play 3DS to fill the time and have some fun.

By the way, anybody else skipping sun and moon on 3DS because we MIGHT get it on the switch?... Im on the edge, dont know if I should get it on 3DS or not...
