Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Dangun's hard but I think it's very accessible; it's intuitive and doesn't require you to decipher any arcade systems, it just requires practice and familiarity..

throwback euroshmups

Where? I see a lot of bad STGs with obvious euroshmup influences but very few that are deliberately aiming to be authentic euroshmups. Just curious.

well that's what I meant. the xydonia demo just released and has been getting a lot of publicity? redux, starr mazer, razion, last hope... yeah idk. the only manic-style stg I've been really able to enjoy lately is raiden v (and it's awesome!)

Thanks! I was looking for this. Do you recommend the game to shmup lovers that don't like bullet hell?

On the easiest setting, it is perfect for STG fans who aren't great at bullet hell shooters. It's very approachable even for newcomers. However, if you straight up don't like the style of gameplay... it's a hard recommendation. It's very Cave-like.

There's some more comments over here on the main thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1293371&highlight=

I might try turning it into more of a proper OT soon, with extra information.

I'm a little pissed.

I made a personal high score in Crimzon Clover and it doesn't count as an official score because of a framerate dip??? Which is strange in itself, me having a GTX 970 and a good pc that plays everything.

Is Raiden V worth £6.80?

Where how what???

Edit: damn only €10 with Deals With Gold!
What do I do? I don't have my X1 here (and I miss it!) and won't for the next 4 months... I wonder if it'll come to PS4 (unless the Azure/Cloud integration makes it impossible) or at least PC.
Damn, short on money and I hate spending them for not being able to play it...

No game is worth financial hardship. If you've got the spare cash nab it online and play it in a few months. If not, don't sweat it, it will go in sale again at some point.

^ Anyone experienced the same?

But on topic: I own Mushihimesama and Deathsmiles now because both are on steam sale! Deathsmiles made a great first impression, actually. It's so frantic and fun!!! I had a run (rank 1, of course :D) up to the final (?) levels. I chose the EXTRA one and died pretty much instantly, haha. I wonder if the regular final stage would have been easier.

It happened to me as well. I only played one run so I don't know if it's a general problem. The game is very picky about framerate but it shouldn't drop anything on modern PCs. I'll try again this weekend and see if it happens again. BTW, the game is currently on sale, only 2€ for one of the absolute best shmups on PC.

Canyon is actually harder than the final stage, if you want the 1CC just ignore it and go straight to the palace. It's not that hard but if you played all stages at rank 1 you'll notice a steep increase in difficulty. I usually play 4 stages at rank 3 and 2 at rank 2, so the palace feels more or less like the other stages, just longer.

Degica Weekend Sale on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/degica/

Pretty good deals, Crimzon Clover 80% off, Dariusburst CS 50% off, etc

It's kind weird how they list the packs/bundles, I picked up the XIIZEAL & DELTAZEAL pack, it's listed as 50% off, but when you factor in the included soundtracks and all, then it's more like 70% off, but who's complaining?

Mushihimesama finally made the genre click for me! I thought "why not go the hard route" and played 1.5 on ultra (using continues but I wanted to see what is possible). Atfirst it was bonkers but after an hour I survived some really long waves of bullets, staying calm and finding the right path - even anticipating some forms. <3 I'm beginning to love it.

@ danmaku
Does the rank I'm choosing for certain levels in Deathsmiles have any influence on the overall playthrough or why are you choosing this pattern?

Rank 3 means more scoring opportunities. I can clear all six stages at rank 3 actually, but picking rank 3 for more than 4 stages activates death mode, which means suicide bullets start to appear. I hate dealing with suicide bullets so I play my least favorite stages at rank 2 (train and forest) and everything else at 3. Of course you don't need to do that if you just want a 1CC, but the more you practice the stages the more you're tempted to do something risky and score higher! :)

edit: BTW, I played a few more runs of Crimzon Clover and had no problems with replays.

Gift bots are fun! Figured I'd spread some love over here as well.

hah, oh no. Looks like everyone already has those games. I debated some of the less common games, but always hard to tell.

Looks like that copy of Crimzon Clover is up for the grabs for anyone who takes it. Surely there is someone out there who hasn't played one of the best doujin shmups around.

I'm terrible, but can't help but love these games. Grabbed Mushihimesama & yet to get past the stage 2 boss, but who cares when it's fun!

That's the spirit! STGs are a never ending cycles of fun, excitement,
feeling terrible about yourself and your life decisions
extremely tense moments and huuuuuge satisfaction!
Also I know this might sounds a little bit hard to believe but trust me when I say that you are not terrible. I'm a really bad gamer but I played this genre a little bit too much in the last two years and I managed to clear quite a bit of games while having tons of fun in the process. Being decent at STGs it's 80% dedication and 20% pure raw skills or something like that.
I still can't clear Battle Garegga but that's because that game loves to make you feel extra bad and I love it for this but I also hate it

Totally fucking agree! :)

It going to be a long road until completing the game at rank 3 :D But so it really does something. Those suicide bullets are hell! So death mode is similar to rank 9999?

The game runs at 58-59 fps max, even in the menues. There's a little bar that turns red when I play. This means the score doesn't officially count. It's a shame because this really takes away the motivation to play the game for score, even with friends. They can't even see my score in their lists. :(

My PC should be able to handle it (GTX 970, Intel Corei7 4790)

Thanks to the power of GAF, I finally have myself an NTSC-J 360. I've hoovered up practically all the CAVE disc releases in recent years, and it's fantastic to finally be able to play all the region-locked ones that have been sat on the shelf for so long. Case in point: Deathsmiles II was never released here (US got it on games on demand), so I'm delighted I now get the chance to play my copy.

Pfff get on my level:

I actually envy all of you with your giant arcade sticks and cool as heck monitors while I'm hear stuck with a shitty Madcataz SE Edition chassis and an old as fuck 4:3 monitor ;_;

Awesome! As cool as it is to see the Steam ports happening, I still don't think we'll see all of the 360 releases make it over, and I love having a physical collection of Cave games.

I was debating purchasing Darius thanks to the Degica sale but I already own the PS4 version with all the DLC

Why should I grab the PC version? anything special? Please note that I do have an UW monitor.

Edit : I also own the 360 version of DDP:R, anything different in the steam port?
