Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

Never forget, we are getting this awesome zelda game! They could just call this machine Nintendo Zelda and i would glady pay 350 for it.

What I would like to know is how the controllers will work when separated for multiplayer. Since there's only one analogue stick per controller how would that work?

First time commenting on this.
I'm a huge Nintendo fan (I bought the Wii U ffs!). The trailer didn't blow me away with excitement. But I do like it, I felt like I knew what NX would be for a while now, and the Switch is pretty much it - I'm definitely interested (more so than when Wii U was announced).
When the first Wii info came out I was excited; I knew it was going to be huge. I remember revolution, I remember Virtual Console, I remember "Wii" name announcement, I remember that cool controller reveal it was all perfectly done IMO. And I think that contributed heavily to Wii's success.
It was obvious Wii U didn't replicate that, it confused consumers, it didn't appeal to gamers or myself. I feel NX reveal hits me somewhere between the two. I'm not giddy with excitement like with the Wii, but I want it more that WiiU.
WiiU wasn't desirable to me when it was announced. I still didn't really want it when I eventually caved in a bought it, it was the games library that sold me on it - real quality stuff.
Switch, however, is desirable - I'm excited. It's a nice looking design, is it 720p resolution? That's good. The thoughts of possible games has me eager (Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Zelda, Pokemon are my personal favs that I can't wait to hear about).
But I still have concerns, the 'D-Pad' looks awful, I know why it's made that way, but that two player mini controller looks cramped and I don't see anyone using it, I feel a good traditional D-pad would be more valued in the long term.

What I really need now is solid info.
And when Nintendo says no more info until next year, it makes me worried. Nintendo said 2016 they will start talking about NX; they haven't said anything, they've shown it but there is still no info.

As someone who invested heavily in Wii U and now seeing all the 'ports' with switch as the first games shown leaves feeling indifferent. I've experienced Skyrim, Splatoon & Mario Kart, I feel it is poor form to show all these off as the first glimpse of the console. I don't want to buy the same basic game twice, at least at full price, there better be something for those that already own these games!
New Mario was good, I'm interested, lots to think about. But what about showing off Pikmin? maybe Metroid? (lol I know), get people freaking out by showing some desired third party games like Final Fantasy or Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Game library and support ultimately sell a console and while that support list is nice, it's not solid. We see it all the time - devs will say they'll support a console, we'll get Skyrim Enhanced edition 4 months later - it won't sell and Bethesda will never make another game on the console... So show us that third parties are really on board!
Same goes for Virtual Console - I'm guessing we'll be buying all those games we already own again for the third time! But please tell me that third parties are back on board, get it back to Wii levels, WiiU VC was a disgrace.
Hell just have the Wii VC back up and live on launch day, everything that was on there is ready day-one. Push it hard with frequent sales and other promotions, Miiverse high score competitions etc.

Then there are the worries about quality, what's the battery life? The controllers look like they'll feel cheap, I want a quality screen. Also that framerate during the trailer was worrying...

I understand this was Nintendo first showing of the console, they wanted to keep the message simple. I appreciate that - in fact I like it. But we still need a steady stream of info. Not to wait until next year - reassure long term fans, pull new fans in and ease investor worries. People are clearly not satisfied and it'll do no good to go quiet now.

P.S.: Etrian Odyssey is my jam, moving away from dual screens makes me worried for the future of this series, at least in the form I enjoy it (especially since we don't even know if the screen has touch). I obviously don't expect anyone to address it, but I do care about the future of dual screen gaming.

Some games you will just need one Joy Con, just like for some Wii games you just needed a Remote.

I'd say it's 99.999% certain that any footage we saw of games in use on Switch was video editing. It's most likely that all signs of the system being on (games, lights, etc.) were added. I'm sure those were dummy marketing models. Someone on GAF even did some analysis of the video that showed strong evidence that the game footage had been superimposed onto the device. And even if the footage were indeed actually playing on the device, it would be a video rather than real-time gameplay.

So basically, I don't think there's any reason to worry at this point since we have no idea how the footage was captured. I also don't worry too much about Nintendo games lacking polish until we're at launch day.

I couldn't have put it better myself. That video gave us a statement on where they want to go with the Nintendo Switch. They also added some cool easter eggs about games we "might" see on the console, but that's it. This wasn't meant to show us specs or game performance, it's a tone piece. It's fun to speculate about things from here, but I don't think we should be taking things so literally.

Considering I see everyone walking around with a portable charger these days for their phones, I 'd say something like that is gonna be a must-have accessory for the Switch.

I shall fashion a head strap so I can walk around in public with it strapped to my head with a joycon in each hand for ultimate comfort

I have summoned the courage of a 1000 samurai to come before you and seek enlightenment about a particular holding capacity of excellence: 4 or 6 units of GB?

Wounded if you can reverse the joycons and turn it upside down al-la lynx so the headphone port is on the bottom. Also I thought Nintendo had gone full modern day the first time I watched the video I thought people were joining in on their phones as well but it was just joy-less screens.

With Link being right-handed again, there might be more to the motion control features than just aiming...

Sword fighting with motion controls isn't going to be a major thing since the game is designed around standard control scheme. The magnets felt amazing on the Wii U gamepad and they will feel even better with the joy cons from the looks of it. Stuff like that + aiming are enough for me to be satisfied with the control scheme.

In the grand scheme of things, what I really hope for is motion control camera in 3rd person games. I think it will be amazing just how fast and how accurately you can change your view. But for some reason I don't think it will ever be implemented.

.....This is gonna be another big flop for Nintendo. Im calling it now.

It looks exactly like the WiiU, but with a detachable controller gimmick. It's only a partial handheld, as you have to treat it like a tablet and put it in a bag if you want to play it outside.

I mean, maybe I'll be wrong, but nothing about this makes me think it will do any better than the WiiU.

I don't think kids will be walking around with this depending on the price BUT I don't think its going to be a big flop. I don't think it'll make a huge impact though against Xbox one or PS4.

This is being communicated much better than Wii U, doesn't carry the confusion a lot of people had as to whether or not U was just a controller for vanilla Wii, and the Wii U launch lineup was fucking dreadful with another "New" Super Mario game and third party titles that were available on other consoles that were already well out. Nobody cared about buying Black Ops on Wii U.

Switch is at least launching with Zelda, and true-- it's also coming out on Wii U, but we don't know for the time being what the other launch titles will be. The Wii U was a failure for several reasons, but IMO the biggest was terrible marketing, communication, and launch software right out of the gate. These are all things they're probably trying very hard to avoid here.

I edited the thread title and made it better

But it doesn't show up on the main site when you click the link

Cmon mods

My recommendation would be that you PM a mod and ask them to please change it. They've always been receptive to that request in my experience.

besides specs I'm more curious about the OS/ features and if it has an achievement/Trophy type system.

I imagine Miiverse will be a thing and that Miitomo achievements through MyNintendo offer us a sneak peak at what Switch achievements will be like.

Ya, I'd agree that the marketing was the biggest factor in WiiU being a huge failure. It's just strange to me that they're sticking so heavily to the main features of the WiiU instead of going for something drastically different to differentiate itself.

So trying to play Skyrim, Zelda on the go/mobile would and should give you a 3 hour battery life.

Playing hand-held type games should give you hand-held/tablet battery life.

If you were to take your PS4/XB1 out of the house it would be clumsy and near impossible. You need the console, brick, controllers, TV/Monitor, outlet, etc.And not to mention some suitcase type custom carrying case to lug it around in.

This with just an AC adapter solves all. Earbuds which everyone already has, the controllers built in/stored, local play type software built-in and good to go.

You couldn't do a 360/PS3/XB1/PS4 on a plane, in a mall, on a bus/train, in a car, etc. as easy as the switch setup.

This is not replacing 3DS or next hand-held system.

So the switch is a home console with mobile ability not a mobile with console ability.

Despite what Nintendo may say, Switch absolutely is replacing the 3DS and absolutely is their next handheld system.

Pretty sure this wil replace all Nintendo systems, they may release a smaller handheld unit later. But all games will for sure work on Switch thats the whole point of it being a hybrid, now they can put all their first party titles on one console wich fixes their first party drought problem.

So what I want to know:

Will the Switch allow me to play digital versions of WiiU games which do not get a full-fledged port (not just Mario Kart and Splatoon).

In other words, if I do not own a WiiU, can I play its games without buying one?

Nothing is official, but I am going to be really, really shocked if there's backwards compatibility in any form. There's almost no chance of complete backwards compatibility. But I'm also not expecting gradual rollout of support of specific titles ala the Xbox One either.

Stupid question incoming. Pretty tough keeping up with this thread.

Can we expect an AC adaptor to be included with this or, at least, made available for purchase? Obviously, the dock will charge the unit, but while it does so you can only play on the TV. When I game on handhelds, I only play at home and stay plugged in at all times. If my wife wants to watch TV and I want to play Switch, I'd like to be able to play on the handheld unit for as long as I want. From what I've been reading, the battery life doesn't sound like it's going to be very good.

I doubt switch will be backwards compatible, seems like it's gonna get ports of the popular Wii U games for people who haven't played them.

i was thinking that a Souls game port on Switch would really make me buy it.
Playing my Souls on a handheld, so good.

I don't think it's been confirmed either way. I really hope they actually go for a standard micro USB port for charging the portable, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a proprietary cable.
