I'm a huge Nintendo fan (I bought the Wii U ffs!). The trailer didn't blow me away with excitement. But I do like it, I felt like I knew what NX would be for a while now, and the Switch is pretty much it - I'm definitely interested (more so than when Wii U was announced).
When the first Wii info came out I was excited; I knew it was going to be huge. I remember revolution, I remember Virtual Console, I remember "Wii" name announcement, I remember that cool controller reveal it was all perfectly done IMO. And I think that contributed heavily to Wii's success.
It was obvious Wii U didn't replicate that, it confused consumers, it didn't appeal to gamers or myself. I feel NX reveal hits me somewhere between the two. I'm not giddy with excitement like with the Wii, but I want it more that WiiU.
WiiU wasn't desirable to me when it was announced. I still didn't really want it when I eventually caved in a bought it, it was the games library that sold me on it - real quality stuff.
Switch, however, is desirable - I'm excited. It's a nice looking design, is it 720p resolution? That's good. The thoughts of possible games has me eager (Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Zelda, Pokemon are my personal favs that I can't wait to hear about).
But I still have concerns, the 'D-Pad' looks awful, I know why it's made that way, but that two player mini controller looks cramped and I don't see anyone using it, I feel a good traditional D-pad would be more valued in the long term.
What I really need now is solid info.
And when Nintendo says no more info until next year, it makes me worried. Nintendo said 2016 they will start talking about NX; they haven't said anything, they've shown it but there is still no info.
As someone who invested heavily in Wii U and now seeing all the 'ports' with switch as the first games shown leaves feeling indifferent. I've experienced Skyrim, Splatoon & Mario Kart, I feel it is poor form to show all these off as the first glimpse of the console. I don't want to buy the same basic game twice, at least at full price, there better be something for those that already own these games!
New Mario was good, I'm interested, lots to think about. But what about showing off Pikmin? maybe Metroid? (lol I know), get people freaking out by showing some desired third party games like Final Fantasy or Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Game library and support ultimately sell a console and while that support list is nice, it's not solid. We see it all the time - devs will say they'll support a console, we'll get Skyrim Enhanced edition 4 months later - it won't sell and Bethesda will never make another game on the console... So show us that third parties are really on board!
Same goes for Virtual Console - I'm guessing we'll be buying all those games we already own again for the third time! But please tell me that third parties are back on board, get it back to Wii levels, WiiU VC was a disgrace.
Hell just have the Wii VC back up and live on launch day, everything that was on there is ready day-one. Push it hard with frequent sales and other promotions, Miiverse high score competitions etc.
Then there are the worries about quality, what's the battery life? The controllers look like they'll feel cheap, I want a quality screen. Also that framerate during the trailer was worrying...
I understand this was Nintendo first showing of the console, they wanted to keep the message simple. I appreciate that - in fact I like it. But we still need a steady stream of info. Not to wait until next year - reassure long term fans, pull new fans in and ease investor worries. People are clearly not satisfied and it'll do no good to go quiet now.
P.S.: Etrian Odyssey is my jam, moving away from dual screens makes me worried for the future of this series, at least in the form I enjoy it (especially since we don't even know if the screen has touch). I obviously don't expect anyone to address it, but I do care about the future of dual screen gaming.
