Anyone notice this? There seems to be more triggers on the inside of the slidy part of the Joy-Con!

I just realized something: do you think games will re-adjust the actions of the abxy buttons when you're holding it on the side like this? It would kind of suck to have to retrain yourself (in a spatial sense) to switch what button to press to say, jump, whenever you change how you're playing.

But considering that picture comes from the Mario Kart footage (I think), it seems the X button will become the acceleration button when playing like that, which would normally be what the A button will do.

Has any of this been discussed at all?

Me too. I hate that it's being released in March.

I'd have loved it to be released this year. I'd be fine with waiting until March for certain games, I'd have happily picked one up with Mario Kart switch and Splatoon.

I wonder what's caused them to wait until March, waiting to launch with more games, hardware production not ready, or something else?

They're not waiting because it's a cool month.

How many first party titles do they need to launch? I'd say 2.

One thing I was thinking about was the inevitable amiibo-crossover-platformer game a lot of people anticipated for the WiiU; do we expect something like that for launch? Something similar to LEGO Dimensions or Skylanders.

I'm of the belief they have missed the boat on something like that, but at the same time, there's no way they haven't been developing a game like that.
I predict that's the showcase new IP for launch that comes bundled with the system.

Never played a Wii game like this, eh? Yeah the controls will adjust depending on the control mehod you choose to play with.

So it appears the best combination in gaming will be a PC and a Switch. The Switch is basically a better Nvidia Shield with Nintendo games on it.
PC for cheaper games and if you really want to play the best looking/performing version of a game. Switch for convenience of console/portable version in one plus all them yummy Nintendo exclusives.

Sounds about right.

Yeah I thought about how the Wii worked but that was kind of different because (at least with the Wii games I've played), the options were either vertical with the nunchuck attached or just the Wiimote by itself horizontally, which changes the control scheme completely. I don't think I've ever played a Wii game that gave you the option to just flip the Wiimote by itself in whatever orientation you wanted to play a game.

Anyway, it's a minor thing but good to have that cleared up.

I believe I read a while ago that Tegra X2 SoC would be available only Q1 2017.

Switch is based on that, everyone supposes.

I think Nintendo should have added a Camera and Mic to the tablet to cover all bases. Perhaps they want to have all games be playable on the TV now. But I'm sure in the future they might wanna start making applications and games that only work on the tablet. You never know in the future AR maybe more popular or a game with Mic uses may be useful.

Absolutely. This is actually a very momentous occasion. This is Nintendo attempting to reenter the mainstream after having left it since the Playstation was released.

The N64->GameCube->Wii era was them attempting to do it on their own, third-parties be damned. The Switch is their attempt to being everyone else back with a very appealing product that allows other developers to being what they are already doing and want to do to a Nintendo console.

I think we need to have a wait and see approach. There are, to my understanding, three main barriers for ports/simultaneous development as it pertains to a console's hardware: Power, Architecture and Mandatory "Gimmicks".

Setting aside the latter two for now, I have serious concerns that the NS will have the power necessary for developers to easily port games to the system or even have simultaneous develop and release of their games. Not to mention how the Game Carts will also impact these games.

I'm not knowledgeable enough when it comes to technology to be able to answer all of these questions; but with what I do think I know and the general history of Nintendo, I would not be confident that Nintendo will get a significant portion of 3rd party games for the duration of the 8.5th generation.

And let's not kid ourselves, Nintendo can claim this is a home console first and foremost but clearly it's a handheld first. I think that's another potential issue going forward, because if the NS is viewed as a mobile device then well, that audience isn't as welcoming to $50-60 games which is what AAA 3rd party games will be.

Here's what I've kind of come to after a day of thinking on the Switch and analyzing the trailer.

- Reveal shows no explicit use of touchscreen, gyroscope motion, or second-screen experiences. In fact, it almost looks like in order to output to the TV, the tablet MUST dock, so I'm not sure if the system is capable of outputting a second screen like the WiiU can. Might be one reason that the system isn't backwards compatible. Breath of the Wild on Switch might not have gyroscope aiming for ranged weapons, or map and inventory management on a touchscreen like the WiiU -- all perks that I personally enjoyed a lot on Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD. Maybe I will get Breath of the Wild on the WiiU after all?

- Despite the above, I do like the idea of taking more traditionally-controlled Nintendo experiences on the go with me. Being able to take Breath of the Wild into work on just the tablet configuration of the Switch to play during downtime sounds pretty great, even if I lose fancy touchscreen menus and intuitive gyro bow aiming.

- If Nintendo doesn't have a new, more contemporary online network in place for the Switch, I'm going to wait it out for sure. I hate friend codes a ton, I think their storefronts are abysmal, and I think the fact that I have a limited amount of 3DS SD-to-SD transfers for my digital games is pretty crap. I need a unified account that works to track all my digital content and more seamless social features, because that is probably the ONE thing in all of my Nintendo experience that I simply can't stand to see again -- even trying to play Mario Kart or Splatoon with my pals, both great games, is largely inhibited by how clunky their social integration is.

- Overall, I think the idea is really neat, and the actual visual design of the console looks really nice. I'm eager to try and get a launch console so I can dive in.

I wonder if that scene with the Splatoon team planning stuff out is a hint that voice chat still won't be possible. Seems like a Nintendo-esque enough thing to say, "we'd rather have people go over each other's houses to play games together!"

Start investing in Nintendo now. Switch is going to be a massive success. Just wait and see when Nintendo starts pumping out new software at a rate never before seen. They can also re-release all the Wii U hits that no one played because no one owned the fuggin thing.

2 things about the Joy Cons, Pro Controller and motion controls

Breath of The Wild uses Gyro for the Magnet item, so since Aunoma said the game would play the same on both Wii U and Switch, it means that the Joy Cons are going to have Motion capabilities.

The Pro Controller was shown for playing Skyrim and Splatoon, the latter of which has motion control use, so I'd at least HOPE that the Pro Controller has motion controls in it.

And one more thing:
- Joy Con XL (R)
- Joy Con XL (L)

Probably gonna be a thing.

BotW already kinda solved this. Any urgent input prompts in that game are a control cross with a direction clearly highlighted, instead of just a button. So instead of "A" or "X" is "righthand button". I expect at least Nintendo's own Switch games to have these types of prompts.

This.

I'd like that.

Seriously, this reveal is driving me crazy. Since yesterday, I've been doing F5 every 5 minutes on GAF hoping to see some news on Switch.

I need to know more! :(

I don't think BOTW Wii U will have gamepad features either unless something's changed.

Suddenly I'm worried that I won't be able to plug in headphones unless the Switch is in handheld mode. The Wii U's inconsistent and dumb headphone implementation doesn't give me confidence in this regard.

Considering how big this thing is I'm not so sure now. I think they're gonna release a new DS in 2018.

I don't think you will, when the Switch is in console mode it needs to be docked.

That'd be so dumb. I hope there's a headphone jack on the charger thing.

Maybe wireless headphones would work but I wouldn't be surprised if sound just doesn't come through while docked anyways because of nonsense.
