Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

If there is anything that the last 2 handheld generations has taught us, is that people generally don't want to play home-oriented games on the go. Switch will let you decide where to play, yeah, but even then people will buy and play their multiplats on Xbox/PS systems for multiple reasons.
Did they teach us that? I don't think there has ever been a handheld with fully featured home console games.

I think this is as superb idea but considering its nowhere near as known as NBA or Skyrim I wonder genuinely if it's even on Nintendo's radar. Hopefully its publisher sees the potential and is in touch with Nintendo.

I will gladly second all of that. Nintendo Land is the most under-appreciated game on Wii U and that is really saying something.

If this game isnt on Nintendos radar then their gaming department needs to be shaken up. Nintendo needs to realize that maybe they arent the only developer out there to make a killer app. Outside of Overwatch and MOBA games on the internet... Rocket League has one of the largest and fastest growing online communities. Would be dumb to not tap into this...

Psyonix has been more than open to develop rocket league on any platform. I hope Nintendo has reached out to have the game made for its platform even if it isn't going to be in the launch window. This is a pretty decent sized discussion on reddit that I hope caught the eye of someone in charge somewhere.

People claim the Vita was that console, and it's failure in the Western market proved that theory

Edit: I personally don't agree with this, as the Vita had "lesser" home console experiences that were just flat out better on... homes consoles. Switch aims to bring those very same experiences you play on the couch with you on the go

Here's the thing, we know at least one version of Madden and Fifa will show up. I know Frostbite engine is allegedly very adaptable to different hardware. Do we expect to see Titanfall 2, Battlefront, or Battlefield on Switch?!

I remember there was a commercial somewhere once where it showed kids demo GW2 on an Apple TV gen 4 with a controller.

I fully expect to see Garden Warfare somehow someway on Switch.

One other question. Do you think we will see an EA Access service on Switch like we have on Xbone?

I also wonder if Ubisoft decides to put on Rainbow Six Seige on Switch. That is the type of game that could garner a following over the full lifetime of the console.

I really think the Vita/Switch comparisons are way off the mark.

Are the Wii/360 the same because they were both home consoles? Of course not.

Some people are focusing on the small similarities instead of the vast differences.

For me it's not even about the quality of the experience. I don't really play portables at home, or travel/game on the go enough to keep up with a separate library on portables. Thus I sold my portables off a while back to get rid of the backlog.

I'm much more interested in Switch as I can just keep playing the same game I was playing in the big screen on the go. That will lead me to finish more games, vs portables that just added a backlog of games I rarely finished since I didn't play them at home.

Vita remote play had promise in that area, but needing fast wifi was a limiting factor and too many games controlled poorly with the small sticks and missing buttons vs DS4.

If EA intends to give any support beyond one-off, contractually obliged Fifa and Madden games...then Garden Warfare and all things Star Wars seem the obvious choices.

Nintendo might allow EA access..if EA actually promised full support (doubtful).

To experience COD at home and on the Go on PS4

You would have to buy
PS4
COD PS4
Vita
COD vita

Also add to the fact that COD on Vita is a lame spin off. Vita doesn't have full controls. And you can't instantly take the same game on the Go.

So people need to stop with the Vita to Switch comparison and I haven't even mentioned Nintendo will actually treat this as their main console.

Yeah, this is a very solid reason why handhelds were not a lot of people's forte. I think another reason (that the folks over at Easy Allies brought to my attention) is the comfortability aspect. That fact that the Switch provides multiple controller options on the go puts to rest the "handhelds are too small/uncomfortable for me to play on" complaint.

For what it's worth I don't think COD on the Switch would be the same one on PS4 either.

Yeah. I mean, I'm absolutely not saying that Switch will take off. But I don't think the Vita is the greatest comparison. While it was a fairly high-end portable at the time, it had some major problems in terms of serving as a literal portable PS3/PS4. In terms of it being a remote device, you noted internet connectivity issues as a major hindrance. Missing buttons was another one (i.e. no L2/L3/R2/R3). As a more minor issue I'll note that some UI's were optimized for the TV and didn't work the best scaled down to the Vita's size resolution.

Ignoring remote play, the Vita never materialized as a home for AAA console ports. While you wouldn't be wrong to be skeptical about whether or not Switch will get big third-party titles, you can at least count on it getting all of Nintendo's biggest titles. You can't say that Vita was a development priority even for Sony.

I'm hoping for a screen-less version to be honest. Mine will stay plugged in 99% of the time anyway - and doing that will absolutely tank the non-user-replaceable battery (unless there's some smart-tech I've missed here).

Well, it is interesting that (AFAIK) no one has produced a direct quote from Nintendo PR reiterating the "no more news this year" line, as opposed to a vaguer "at a later date" or "sometime before March 2017," and this sort of miscommunication/misinterpretation wouldn't be completely unprecedented.

That said, it's best to just see if anything tomorrow contradicts Mochizuki and not get our hopes up otherwise.

If Laura already knows about bundles I'd expect Nintendo to reveal full details for Switch with the games and prices around the time of the Investor Meeting on Wednesday.

Too soon. You lock in pricing much closer to launch. You don't price something 6 months out.

We don’t know if it’s not user-repaceable. Many times Nintendo’s batteries are one screw away of being replaced, that’s not hot-swappable but user-repleaceble enough for me to give me peace of mind. Even some toys hide AA batteries away with a screw.

But also if you don’t plan to use the screen why would you even care about the battery’s health? :P

Really curious to know about this bundles report, i don't think Nintendo will lauch a bundle without the dock, the Hybrid nature is the main focus of Switch, they showed that clearly in that 3 minutes trailer...though it'd be great to have more options, and actually if an eventual dockless bundle would be 50$ cheaper than i could bite, my main use and hype for Switch is for the Handheld nature, they can deny that as much as they want, but to me Switch is either the 3DS successor

Honestly, I believe there won't be a dockless Switch SKU at launch, it would indeed contrast with the hybrid nature of the device, the "Switch" name itself, etc.etc.
However, when revisions of the Switch will be released, I'm sure we'll start seeing dockless SKUs, in order to give to users who are already invested in the system the possibility to upgrade without the need of changing the dock and at a cheaper price.

This is different though because the same game you play on the go is the one you play at home. With PSP and Vita you had watered down spin offs which you bought sepereately. And even then those games were the best selling on Vita and PSP. God of War was still more popular than Locoroco.

Also this has the added benefit of local multiplayer on the portable.

If Nintendo released Switch Home where there is a next gen Zelda game.

And Switch Go which has a watered down spin off which you have to buy sepereately I'd agree with you. So far we don't know how people will react to this system as there is nothing like this on the market made by a huge manufacturer like Sony or Nintendo.

They will always be watered down ports compared to their PS4/Pro/Xbox S/Scorpio versions in terms of graphics, controls and online services, so yeah, don't expect people to be excited to play the last COD at street basket courts or at a rooftop party. There is a reason if your typical Mario stage on handheld lasts about 3 minutes.

What I'd love to see from Square

-FVIIR
-FFXV
-Kingdom Hearts 3
- KH HD collection of games (2.8, etc.)
- DQXI (already confirmed)
-FFX and FFX-2 Remaster

I know all of these wouldn't come, but I would buy all of them.

Sign me up for the Zelda bundle.

Strongly doubt there's a Zelda bundle.

Bundles will probably be with whatever Wii U ports/updates are ready for launch (Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash etc.).

Games that didn't cost them tons to develop the Switch version for, that appeal both to Wii U owners still playing those games and people who missed them from never having a Wii U.

Not Zelda that's been in development for ages, must have a huge budget and thus needs to sell as many $60 copies as possible.

The price itself was a huge error, not communicating about it. Do you think that if you communicate a bad price closer to release is better?

Honestly, yes. Announcing a price closer to the launch, buried amongs other exciting news if the price is too high for what it's worth should be a better strategy.

But well, I'm not working in marketing.

But if the price is low. They can get the preorder sales going

Or the price steals all the thunder and the positive news get buried.

One thing I hope they get right this time is the OS.
Wii U was a pain in the ass to navigate through. App switching was simply unbearable.

I know people think this will be the next Wii at $199, but I don't know if Nintendo can take a loss. I think Kimishima said they won't. If there's a $50 subscription service they come up with then maybe they'll do it for $199 and bank on people getting the subscription.

Idk we'll see

I'm expecting $299.

Nintendo said they wouldn't be taking a loss, but I hope they at least go for breaking even, or close to it. It needs to be affordable, and I don't think they can shoot for profiting like $100 off of every sale like they did with the Wii.

$250 should be the magic number and I really hope they are able to hit it.

Wii was $250.

I see either $250 for a gameless SKU, or $300 with a game or two bundled (1 or 2 of the Wii U ports/enhanced versions).

They won't sell it at loss, we already know that.

I just don't see how having a dockless version at launch is compatible with their own preliminary push about this being a device for both the home and on-the-go. A year or so down the line, sure, but I think doing it at launch at best muddies the clarity of the message and at worst makes it seem you're almost back-tracking on your key selling point.

But stranger things have happened.

$50 sub

really now

I know. I already said Kimishima said that. Doesn't mean there are ways around it to "make" it look like to the general consumer that they're getting a great deal.

$250 is perfect. They'd probably break even with that or make a few bucks.

Yeah no chance Nintendo does this.

I also don't think selling this without the dock will save them much, if any money. There's really no point in doing this.
