Nintendo Q2 FY2016 Earnings Release (0.34M Wii U HW, 1.7M 3DS HW)

Mario Kart 8 at 8 million...wow. This game will probably be on the record books for being one of the highest attach rates of any game in history.

If Mario Kart 8 will be ported to Switch, 10 million is pretty much guaranteed.

MK8 vs Watch_Dogs sales battle ain't that lopsided for the latter after all (I remember there was a thread that pitted them both).

It would be fun if a lot of people will comment on that Polygon article every now and then to remind them of their ridiculous prediction lol.

I remember the Titanfall vs MK8 more though lol.^_^ And MK8 indeed is one of the rare game with super high attach rate.

MK8 Switch is going to a very nice and profitable venture for them as all the assets is more or less there so, the cost of the game is going to be minuscule.^_^

They would have had one more New 3DS sale if they just released that Mario 3D land bundle America got in Europe. So annoying, there's no new 3DS bundle at the moment in Australia.

Worst selling home console.

second-worst. they sold 3 million color tv-game units in the 70s.

also, the numbers for 3ds aren't great, but considering that the system hasn't had a major release and that last year the new 3ds was still... new, having an increase in hardware sales and being steady year over year on software is not a bad result. the system is on track to beat what the game boy did from 1996-2002.

And considering that holiday is coming this time with an actual powerful software like Mario Maker 3DS, Yoshi Wooly World, Momotaro in Japan and of course Sun and Moon, there is only way up there.^_^

While the number of sales for 3ds is growing, the bigger sales are for the cheapest one, 2ds. The total net sales and operating income are in the dump compared to last year.

Luigi's Mansion's sales numbers still get a reaction out of me.

It's pretty astonishing that it sold 5m, I would have never guessed that and already found more than 1m a considerable success.

Look man, if you consider the amount of pong clones it had to compete with, I consider 3 million to be a solid number.

And thus, should be inflated to over 15 million, making the Wii U the worst selling console :V

Yup. And it is sad that Fed Force end up destroying that success streak by NLG.T_T

Hope that NLG will be given more trust to make new games which had much more potential of success than a dead IP next time.^_^

I find it fascinating how Kirby is actually a way more lucrative and successful series than Metroid.

Gameboy was released in 96?

Sp, I guess this means its really hard to earn a lot of money on mobile, even if you have a huge hit like Pokemon Go?

I suspect that it's probably more that a fraction of the pokemon go money is attributed to Nintendo and not the Pokémon company/Niantic/whoever else (gamefreak?).

We don't know the details of the revenue split between Nintendo, Niantic and Pokémon Company. We know both Apple and Google take 30%. The rest is guesswork.

Pokemon GO is a megahit it will be hard to replicate though, and even though we tripple it or whatever to take into account the money that goes to Niantic, Creatures and Game Freak, the number is still really low compared to their other revenue. In a quarter where they were also very low. I think this number justifies the reluctance with Nintendo have gone mobile.

Profits/Sales from Pokemon Go aren't shown in there. Profits from Pokemon Go are listed under "Share of profit of entities accounted for using equity method" and amount to up to 12bn from the Pokemon Company.

Nintendo 3DS hardware sales aren't bad at all for a 6 year old system. In fact, sales during the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2017 are comfortably higher than the previous 2 years.

Nintendo 3DS is holding much better than I would have expected 2 years ago.

Ok, thanks. 12bn yen?

no, but pokemon was, and it's what headlined the game boy during its second phase in the 90s and 00s.

Yep. Game Boy was essentially dead in 1996 and everyone was asking Nintendo for its successor. Then Pokémon came and gave it a renaissance

Ok, thanks. 12bn yen?

The 12bn yen are attributable to profit from all entities accounted for using equity method. However, as this profit was only 1.5bn in the first 6 months of the previous fiscal year, one can assume that a big chunk of this profit is attributable to Pokemon Go.

Also note, Nintendo's total gross profit from their own hardware, software, smartphone games, IP licensing, and playing cards was only 61.6bn yen, making the Pokemon Go profit of approximately 10bn yen even more astonishing.

Exactly.
If (and it's a big IF) 3DS maintain these good sales in the second half of the FY then it will outperform Nintendo expectation.

Mario Kart 8 selling 8 million on a 13 million install base is fantastic. Well deserved for one if the best (if not the best) game in the series ever. My favorite Wii U game by far

I find it fascinating how Kirby is actually a way more lucrative and successful series than Metroid.
Kirby is way cooler than Samus.

Samus: Yes! After ten minutes of backtracking, my missile ammo has increased by five!

Kirby: *eats enemy, becomes embodiment of destruction with unparalleled power*

Kirby eats Samus and he instantly acquires a technique it took Samus half the game to get.

Also while I am glad XY outsold BW, ORAS outselling HGSS sickens me. SICKENS.

I'm not sure if SM will top XY, but I think it will certainly pass 10 million. Even if Pokemon games decline in sales, they are still huge successes. Not to mention Pokemon is one of the few gaming franchises with a massive merchandise empire.

Mario Kart 8 at 8 million on Wii U is insane. it managed to beat MKDD which was on a console with a quite higher userbase.

the Mario Kart for switch could be a massive beast.

Kirby consistently sells well and the games are high quality. People shouldn't underestimate that little fella.

It should also be noted that unlike Metroid, Kirby has a game company to back him up and constantly create new games, that being HAL Labs.
